Dragonfly

ok so long story short i have two daughters aged almost 3 and 4 months old. i also have my partner.
we lived with my in laws until 3 months ago and now we're finally living on our own.
the only problem is my partner is very into junk food, he doesn'y care if its healthy and terrible he just wants it to taste good - because thats pretty much how he was raised. well now my daughter is the same (my mother in law gave her chocolate at 5 months old!!!) finally i am out of that house and i can really put my foot down now (i know i should of a long time ago)
but i desperately want to start my toddler eating well (she has always had veggies with her dinner and fruit snacks but people also gave her lots of chocolate and chips and fizzy drinks etc)
well now she is pretty "addicted" to junk food.
what are some good recipe ideas for breakfast, lunch and dinner and snacks that i can start giving her.
im hoping that if i just cut it all out she will hate it at first but then just get over it as i know she wont starve herself.
so what foods do you give your kids? do you also give them any supplements? etc etc
as much advice as possible would be great thanks. i just want to fix the massive mistake i've made :(
when i said fruit snacks i meant an actual peice of fruit cut up
and she can still have it on special occasions but at the moment she has it ALL the time

Answer
Well... I can see your frustration...Solids are usually introduced at 5 - 6 months and start with rice cereal, vegies etc - not chocolate LOL

I think your taking the right approach - sure "treats" at special occassions (birthdays, holidays etc) but typically on a day to day basis stick with the basics (which in your daughter's case will feel like going cold turkey!) .... not having it in the house will help!

So - BREAKFAST - Cereal (try something with little or minimal sugar - don't say anything - just put it in front of her - she will get use to the non-sugar taste!)... and egg on toast.... yoghurt with berries or banana and a sprinkle of muesli, toasted fruit bagel (occassionally)

SNACK - fruit (apple, banana - eg sliced fruit), crisp biscuits & cheese, carrot with cream cheese dip

LUNCH - sandwich, wrap, bagel with fillings such as cheese, lettuce & carrot, carrot and cream, chicken and avocado, cheese, tuna etc, soup - add some pasta to it to make it more like a meal
A favourite for my kids is chicken sticks (basically honey soy chicken on a stick) or california style sushi rolls (with tuna, avocado, or chicken in them)
Left over's from the previous nights dinner - bolognaise and noodles is always a hit in winter or an egg on toast!

SNACK - Make it fun - bake mini cupcakes or little muffins (they are only small and she will feel like it is a treat - they freeze really well), Anzac style cookies, fruit - dried fruit such as apricots or sultanas are a nice healthy sweet treat

DINNER - meat and veg (eg roast chicken with potatoes, pumpkin, corn and broccoli) - fish and rice - pasta etc

DESSERT - fruit and yoghurt or freeze some fruit juice ice blocks as a "icy" treat

Stick with it - occassional treats are fine - but day to day I think your on the right track! Good Luck :)

What are some meals you make for your toddler?

mama <3

The past few weeks I have gotten a little lazy about making my daughter her meals. We have been so busy and she is getting a bit picky so I have just been sticking to the basics that I know she will eat rather than thinking up ways to incorporate many different foods like I have in the past. So she has been eating a lot of peanut butter sandwiches (no jelly), cheese sticks, turkey sandwiches, cheerios, yogurt, strawberries, bananas, carrots, and green beans. I'm sure she's getting tired of the same plain foods so I'm looking for some healthy meal ideas that use different foods than what she has been eating lately.
Any ideas? What are your toddlers favorites?
I know that she can eat what we eat and usually for dinner she does. But I get up many hours before her in the morning and start housework or homework and I usually just grab a yogurt and banana for breakfast long before she is awake. She eats lunch at 1 then takes a nap and I like to wait for my husband to get home from work at 2 and eat lunch with him. For dinner we usually all eat the same things, but she eats dinner at 5 on the dot and if my husband and I had a big lunch or want some quiet time while we eat then we wait until after she is in bed at 7 to make dinner for ourselves. I know that she CAN eat what we are eating but its harder on me to wait until she is up in the morning to make breakfast or eat dinner at 5 when I won't be hungry for another few hours. I always sit with her at the table while she eats, I just don't always eat with her or what she is eating.

Answer
I don't have kids myself (yet), but have baby sat for years and have 2 nephews so here are somethings that I have fed toddlers:
*Pasta- Brown ground beef add jarred/canned or homemade sauce, and chop an onion into it, you can also add mushrooms, green peppers or olives depending you your family's likes & dislikes.
*Veggie Meatloaf- Much better than it sounds, I don't actually make it this way to be sneaky, its just how we like our meatloaf. I mince celery, onion, and carrots and mix with ground meat, egg, and breadcrumbs to make my meatloaf. Sometimes I top it with a ketchup and brown-sugar sauce and sometimes I don't.
*Soup- Chicken, noodles, broth, carrots, celery, and onions. (Sometimes corn too) Of course make sure that the noodle you choose are smaller in size and the veg & chicken are chopped to toddler sized bites.
*Pizza- Homemade of course, simple and quick & she can choose what goes on it to some extent.
Sneaky Mac N Cheese- This recipe calls for pureed Cauliflower in the Mac... google Jessica Seinfeld's recipe, its in her cookbook Deceptively Delicious.
*Eggs- You can do so much with eggs & in no time at all, and my whole family loves breakfast for dinner, try omletes, scrambles with veg mixed in, or a frittata.

Hope you can use some of these ideas or they at least generate a thought in you for something else you could make. Good Luck!

What are some healthy, easy meals\snacks for breakfast, lunch and dinner that I can make at home?
10 points for the most ideas for all the meals\snacks!

Answer
Breakfast:

- Egg whites (better for you than the whole egg) with a little salt and pepper, maybe some cheese to add flavor, on wheat toast.
- Grapefruit (it's sooo healthy for you, it can be a snack too)
- Cottage Cheese Pancakes: http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/recipes/351
- Oatmeal
- All fruit smoothie. Have non frozen fruit and add ice or use frozen fruit and add a little 100% fruit juice. You can make it a *healthy* milk shake by using low fat milk instead of juice and adding a little sugar (sugar isn't unhealthy in small amounts, but fake sugar like sweet and low and equal are bad for you)

Lunch/Dinner:

- Chicken breast with lemon pepper or other seasonings
- A spinach tortilla with chicken cooked in some bbq sauce. Add lots of lettuce and a little bit of light ranch (like a teaspoon, if even that).
- Salad- there are thousands of possible salads you can make but what I love doing is a bunch of lettuce, some spinach if you like that, salt, pepper, garlic (powder and only a small amount) and vegetables like tomatoes, cucumbers, or even carrots and peppers
- Taco Salad: brown some lean beef, drain any fat, add seasonings (McCormick has a taco seasoning packet for 50 cents). Make a bowl full of lettuce, tomatoes if you want, some beef, some cheese if you want, and tortilla chips if you want (less healthy version).
- Chicken in a bag- McCormick's has these awesome chicken bag seasonings where you throw chicken in the bag (they provide) with some carrots, potatoes, whatever you want, add the seasoning and bake for about an hour. One of my husbands favorites!
- Costco sells individual salmon fillets. Take one out of the fridge/freezer, season to your liking, throw on a pan, the grill, or in the oven and cook.
- a sandwich- between whole wheat bread slices, pita style, or wrapped up (spinach wraps are really delicious, or whole wheat wraps which I'm not a huge fan of).
- Make some quinoa or brown rice in a rice cooker or in a pot if you don't have one. Add some black beans, salt and pepper, and some mozzarella if it's still to bland. I like to add some sriracha (chili hot sauce) into the rice as it cooks and some garlic seasoning. It adds some kick and makes it taste really good without adding the sodium from cheese.

Snacks:
- peppers
- celery. If you hate it alone add some organic peanut butter (no preservatives) you can even go to many stores and grind your own peanuts into peanut butter.
- peas, green beans, cucumbers, tomatoes, other vegetables but not potatoes or corn.
- apples, pears, bananas, berries, grapefruit, and other fruits.
- some nuts or a homemade trail mix (raisins, peanuts, almonds, some dark chocolate chips, whatever else you want)

Dessert
- a small amount of dark chocolate is actually really good for you. The higher the cocoa content the better :) But only a small amount.

Those are my favorites but check out this site: http://www.lifehack.org/articles/lifehack/over-100-quick-and-easy-healthy-foods.html

for more options. There are an unlimited amount of healthy foods out there you just have to find what you like and stick with it :)

What are healthy dishes I can bring camping to share with a group?

Camp.Bike.

I am going car camping & RVing a few times this summer with family and friends. We always have plenty of tasty and unhealthy food, but and I would like to bring some healthier options. I’m kind of stumped for ideas of food that travels well and is healthy and can be made for a group. I am open to side dishes, snacks, desserts, or any other ideas. What are the easiest easiest recipes to control blood pressure?

healthy sandwich recipes for children image

joeygirl

My dad's doctor just recommended the DASH diet to control his blood pressure. He lives alone most of the time seeing i go to college out of state. I think the extent of his cooking skills are cereal and ham sandwiches which are not on the diet plan. What are some healthy cheap recipes to try to try out?

Answer
If your Dad doesn't like to cook much, the best thing you can offer him regarding recipes that will promote lower blood pressure is simplicity. In this vein, let's focus on the basics regarding diet and blood pressure.

Too much sodium is responsible for a great deal of high blood pressure problems. Most Americans get way too much of it in their diets, and most of it isn't due to sprinkling more table salt on food either. Processed food is loaded with it. Why not do grocery shopping for your father, or get somebody else to do it for you? Read the labels, and reject anything with a lot of sodium.

Avoid foods with LDL cholesterol as well. This is the "bad" cholesterol, and can be a big contributor to blood pressure problems. The Mayo Clinic recommends eating oatmeal and oat bran, nuts, especially walnuts and almonds, and fish high in omega 3 oils -- salmon, mackerel, tuna, lake trout, sardines, herring.

Focus on the simple recipes for your father. How much cooking does a bowl of oat bran with skim milk take? If that's too bland for him, sprinkle a few blueberries on top. Skim milk is an ideal food for high blood pressure too, since it contains calcium and vitamin D, and the two have a synergistic effect.

Potassium helps lower blood pressure too. Foods rich in potassium include bananas, baked potatoes and soybeans. As bad a cook as your Dad may be, peeling a banana a few times a day is something I'm sure he can handle. I hope you see what I'm driving at here -- simple ways he can lower his blood pressure. Don't try to turn him into Julia Child here.

Half an ounce of dark chocolate per day has also been shown to lower blood pressure. The higher percentage of cacao in it, the better. For more tips, please read the resources in the source box.

God bless your Dad, and you for helping him.

What's a fun, different, and healthy snack to bring to my daughter's kindergarten class?

ha

My daughter is turning 6 tomorrow and we'd like to bring a snack to class to celebrate.

The classic 'cupcakes' is really overdone and not so healthy. What are some things we could bring that are just as fun, but maybe healthier, than cupcakes?

I don't want my daughter to go down in history as the one who's mom brought carrot sticks and celery for snack at school. *gag*

Answer
There have been children who brought tiny sandwiches and fruit snacks. Also, you can try cinnamon rolls, baked cheese bites or marshmallow pops (the recipe is on this website: http://www.verybestbaking.com/recipes/detail.aspx?ID=128879)... Hope this helps! :) good luck deciding what to bring!

Answer
Make yummy sandwhiche's

CUBAN SANDWICH

Traditional Ingredients:

3 slices (almost shaved) of boiled ham
3 slices of turkey (optional)
3 slices roast pork hot or cold
3 slices of salami
3 slices of Swiss cheese
3 or 4 slices of pickles
1/3 cut Cuban bread hard crust

Optional Ingredients:

3 slices of tomato
4 slices of green bell pepper
3 slices onion
1/3 cut French or Cuban bread
1 leaf Romaine lettuce
mayonnaise, mustard to taste

It is important that the sandwich be prepared on Cuban bread, French or Italian bread - any artisan style bread with a hard crust.

All cold cuts should be sliced very thinly; almost shaved. Slice the bread in an open faced fashion and spread lightly with mustard first, then with mayonnaise. Remember this is not entirely traditional, but still good.

Add the ham (roast pork), turkey and salami. Next add a layer of tomato, pepper, onion and lettuce. Top the sandwich and press.

Press the sandwich on a hot skillet with a weight on top. A suitable weight would be a heavy (clean) cast iron skillet that has been heated until sizzling.

Or better yet, use a sandwich press or panini grill if one is available.

Cuban Sandwiches and their variations are sold in almost every Deli or Restaurant in Tampa, Florida.

Cuban sandwiches are good cold and for picnics or take-alongs, too.

Ideas on dish or appetizer to bring to Holiday Party?

P

I am bored with all my same old recipes. I am looking for some new ideas on a dish or appetizer to bring to a holiday party. Something that can be served cold or can heat and hang out in a crock pot. I won't have access to an oven. Can be healthy, unhealthy, whatever, just want some news ideas or suggestions. Thanks!
I have checked with the hostess, and she said anything goes, all she is providing is hot sandwichs and nobody has confirmed a dish they are bringing as of yet so anything goes. I just really want different ideas other then my same old recipes. Thanks.

Answer
You are best to work with the hostess to see if they would like something like the potato salad or a tray of dainty finger sandwiches, a tray of Vol au Vents (the filling can be re heated there.)

So i'm really into healthy things. Breakfast is my FAVORITE meal of the day. I love egg beaters and use them all the time. Any healthy, low cal, recipes that you might have using them?

aslo, if you have any other of your favorite recipes i would love to hear them. i love cooking healthy new meals!

Answer
I used to eat those, and I would cook them, and then put them on whole wheat low cal bread with Light Mayo. I love egg sandwiches.

I'm on a diet and need ideas on food i can take to work other than sandwiches?

Q. I want to eat more healthily. Have already cut out oil and sugary things from my diet but want to stop eating as much bread. Any ideas on healthy low cal food that could take to work as a packed lunch? Thanks!
I'm not on a specific "diet" just cuttin out the crap!
Happy birthday bettyboop!

Answer
You can make little home made california rolls. (sushi rolls)
Easy to make and delicious to eat.

You could have your sandwich ingredients made up in a lettuce leaf instead of bread.

If you have access to a fridge and microwave at work, try taking a lunchbox with your left over healthy dinner!

Eating rice cold is generally seen as a big NO NO, but actually its pretty tasty, and I have had pretty serious food poisoning before, but never because of the rice.
So you can make some rice salads, or have rice with a piece of lean meat, and some veges.

Always have a fruit bowl handy, dried nuts, rice crackers... all of which are good for when you get snack cravings.

Make some homemade muesli bars.

Eat flavoured tuna and rice.

My husband and I are newlyweds, trying to stay healthy. We both work full time jobs, so it's hard to plan ahead or make meals that take alot of prep and cook time.
So basically, I'm looking for quick & easy dinners that are healthy or low in calories/fat.
Please dont give me websites for recipes. I dont have time to browse them. Just shoot me some good recipes. Thanks =)!!

Answer
Sesame Chicken
This recipe really satisfies my craving for Chinese food. I serve it over rice and steamed vegetables on the side. I usually double the sauce to make it especially decadent.
6 servings 21 min 5 min prep

6 boneless skinless chicken breasts
1/4 cup honey
1/4 cup soy sauce
1/2 cup water
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds

Cut chicken breast into 1 inch strips.
Heat a large non-stick skillet that has been sprayed with Pam, over medium-high heat.
Cook chicken strips for about 6 minutes until no longer pink.
Mix together honey, soy sauce, water, corn starch, ginger and red pepper flakes.
Whisk until no corn starch lumps appear.
Pour sauce mixture into skillet with chicken.
Cook until sauce thickens slightly.
You can add more water if sauce is too thick.
Sprinkle with sesame seeds.
Cover and simmer for 10 minutes or until chicken starts to soak up the sauce.

Easy and Tasty Barbecue Chicken Sandwiches in the Crock Pot
This is almost too easy to be called a recipe, but I had to share it anyway. I came up with it one night when I wanted a nice meal but wasn't feeling too motivated. I love crock pot cooking!
4-6 servings ½ day 10 min prep

1-2 lb boneless skinless chicken breasts
1 (18 ounce) jar of your favorite barbecue sauce (I love K.C. Masterpiece!)
1 medium sweet onion, sliced
4-6 hamburger buns

Remove all visible fat from the chicken and toss it in the crock pot.
Place the onion slices on top of the chicken.
Pour the barbecue sauce over top.
You may not need the entire jar, just enough to cover the chicken.
Cook it on LOW for 8 hours or until the chicken is nice and tender.
Shred the chicken with a fork and knife; scoop the mixture onto the bottom buns and top it with the top buns.
Or, if you're like my dad, you might prefer leaving the breasts whole and eating it that way.
Voila!
An easy weeknight meal that doesn't heat up your kitchen in the summertime!
I love this with potato chips and a carrot and raisin salad.

Chicken Scaloppine With Lemon Sauce (Low Fat)
This is a wonderful lower-fat restaurant-quality dish that is easy to make, I have served this many times in the past at my dinner parties and always receive rave reviews, the chicken alone even by itself is very good, the capers are only optional if you are a lover of capers then add them in as it really adds to the flavour of this dish, I would strongly suggest to double the sauce I most always do and please be certain to use only dry breadcrumbs as fresh will not stick to the chicken as well --- this is very good!
4 servings 35 min 25 min prep

4 boneless skinless chicken breasts (pounded to about 1/3-inch thickness)
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
2 eggs
1 cup dry breadcrumbs
1/4 teaspoon poultry seasoning (or to taste)
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
seasoning salt
olive oil (for frying)
2 tablespoons butter (optional)
1/4 cup chicken broth
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 tablespoon capers (or to taste) (optional)
1/4 teaspoon salt (can use more to taste)
4-5 thin lemon slices
fresh parsley, chopped

In a small bowl, whisk together mustard and eggs; set aside.
Combine the dry bread crumbs, poultry seasoning, garlic powder and seasoning salt; spread on a piece of waxed paper.
Dip the breasts in egg/mustard mixture (shake off any excess egg).
Then coat well with the crumb mixture.
Heat the oil with 2 tablespoons butter(if using) in a frypan.
Saute the chicken for 5 minutes on each side, or until it is no longer pink inside. Remove and transfer to a plate to keep warm.
In the same pan add in the broth, lemon juice, capers (if using) and 1/4 teaspoon salt (or to taste) bring to a boil, scraping brown bits from the pan.
Add in lemon slices and parsley; mix to combine for about 1 minute.
Spoon the glaze/sauce over chicken.
Delicious!

Black Bean and Tortilla Bake
6 servings 35 min 5 min prep

1 garlic clove, minced
1/2 cup chopped onions
1 cup chopped tomatoes
1/2 cup chopped green onions
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
2 teaspoons cumin powder
1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
1 (16 ounce) can black beans, rinsed and drained
1 tablespoon chopped cilantro
salt and pepper
12 soft corn tortillas
8 ounces low-fat cheddar cheese, shredded, reserve 2 tablespoons (I used fat free)

Preheat oven to 350* F.
Spray a large skillet with cooking spray.
Add garlic, onions, tomato, green onion, cumin, and chili powder.
Cook on medium heat until onion is tender.
Add tomato sauce and cook 5 minutes more.
Stir in beans, cilantro, salt and pepper.
Spray a 9 inch square baking dish with cooking spray.
Layer 4 tortillas, 1/3 cheese, and 1/3 of the bean mixture; repeat 2 more times.
Top with reserved 2 tablespoons of cheese.
Bake 20 minutes, covered, then 10 minutes uncovered or until bubbly.

What is low in calories that tastes good on celery?

Jenna

I'm on a low calorie diet and need to eat more celery. But it tastes like fermented pond water! Peanut butter is way too high in fat and calories and I don't know what else tastes good. Preferrably something under 35 calories.

Answer
If you have an ED and cannot stop munching, you still should not eat something that tastes like fermented pond water.
You can eat lettuce/greens, mushrooms, asparagus, cucumbers, radishes and numerous other foods (if you can stomach anything from the cabbage family).

I used to not like celery either, omitting it in all my recipes. And I like everything with few exceptions, like cinnamon and honey (childhood traumas), spicy food and poultry white meat or skin. White meat is too dry, the skin is too fatty so dark meat is perfect.

Then I stopped smoking and had to munch all day long for 2 weeks on celery/raw carrots feeling like Bunny Rabbit. My natural tan skin turned fake orange tan. With celery, I would end up with a dry ball of fiber in my mouth (like a chewing gum) that I would not swallow so I would spit it out as too much fiber will constipate you. You can spit out a dry fiber ball in your mouth but once it gets in your intestines, you might get an obstruction and constipation.

It never occurred to me that you would need some dip to eat celery.
That is very American, like eating apples or bananas with peanut butter.
Btw, natural peanut butter is very healthy, in moderation, like 2Tbsp, as you need those calories of good protein and good fats to feed your brain and organs (you sound like your brain needs it).
A PB&J sandwich is healthy…peanut butter and jelly spread between 2 slices of whole-wheat bread. You get your carbs, your protein, your fats, your fiber and your vitamins/minerals.
What more can you ask for?

Pea-nuts are not nuts…they’re legumes from the same family as peas. Try Nutella (from Europe, so it does not have crappy additives that Americans still allow in their processed food) and it has true nuts (hazelnuts) and chocolate, to make it yummy, provide antioxidants and act as a natural antidepressant (makes you feel better if you feel bad and makes you feel good if you don’t feel bad).

Now I like celery if I “peel” it (peel away those outside strings) and cook it with soups (the “fermented pond water” taste goes away if cooked in water). I also like raw (peeled) celery, cut tiny, tiny, in my tuna sandwich to add crunchiness. I would guess the strong taste of tuna overwhelms the taste of the 2Tbsp of celery.

When I was a teenager I did not like garlic, onions, Brussels sprouts or raw seafood.
I bet I would have hated broccoli too, if I would have been exposed to it (I was not).
Now I love all of those and I use garlic a lot, I make onion soup, I love Brussels Sprout Parmentier (with garlic and roasted potatoes), and I like sushi.

If you’re a teenager, you do not have adult taste buds yet. Because if you’re a teenager, you don’t get food cravings for low calorie food as you need a lot of calories to grow. You get cravings for meat and potatoes and anything high carbs like cookies/cakes/candies…and bread with chocolate (or Nutella) and lots of milk, cheese and ice-cream.
You should not get craving from veggies from the cabbage family (cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, radish, turnips, collard greens, kale…) or celery, asparagus, beets and artichoke.

I went out of my way to make artichokes fun to eat for my kids…fresh artichokes with the prickly ends of the leaves cut off (not artichoke hearts coming from a can that you use for salads), pressure cooked and served with their favorite dip (I used vinaigrette but did not mind if they wanted to use…ketchup). You eat one leaf at a time until you get to the heart and still I miserably failed to make them appreciate artichokes, because they did not have the taste buds for it...yet...as it did not have enough calories for their need (I still love artichokes).

I stay away from hummus for political reason, as some countries fight about some other countries stealing their recipes…trying to find any reason to go to war. They are worse than a daughter-in-law stealing a recipe from her mother-in-law. The Lebanese are like “the Israelis stole our hummus recipe” but then the Israelis recipe tastes better so now the Lebanese are pissed off.
If I want chickpeas, I’ll just make a couscous and if a Berber comes into my kitchen claiming that I stole a couscous recipe, I could mention that my father was Berber so YOU shut up.

I wonder which country made the first bread and could claim “protected status”.

You don’t need some dip to help you swallow some food that tastes crappy to you.
Ditch the celery.
Eat enough to cover your BMR + growth (-21).
Eat enough calories to cover your BMR or your body will adapt to a low caloric intake and lower your metabolism, making it very hard for you to use your body fat. And then, as soon as you would eventually start eating normally again, you would make body fat very easily, because you would have a lower metabolism and therefore regain all the weight you lost and keep going up, unless you exercise A LOT.

What are some good Dinner ideas for very Hot Weather?

Genevieve

Just for my partner and I. I don't really feel like cooking too extensively because of the weather, I live in Phoenix, but we are healthy and like to make meals at home. What are your best dinner ideas for very hot weather?

Answer
I found that having a toaster oven and 2-burner hot plate on the back porch allows you to fix whatever you want without heating up the house. I did the salad and sandwich thing during the hot days but all that got old so I would make meat loaf and a baked potato in the toaster oven and have something other than salads and sandwiches to eat. I use the two-burner stove to make stir-fry meals.

If you are not interested in either of those suggestions, then you can prepare your dinner early in the morning when it is cool - making fried chicken, potato salad, deviled eggs, baked beans, etc. Refrigerate it all and haul it out for dinner. Or you can prepare the meal and zap it to reheat when you are ready to eat.

Here is a nice salad recipe if you are after salad recipes:

CHICKEN SALAD

Bed of salad greens in a large bowl for each person
1/2 chopped apple per bowl
1 handful of cranraisins
Shredded cooked chicken
Toasted pine nuts
Toasted sunflower seeds
Toasted walnuts
Feta Cheese

Serve with Raspberry Vinaigrette. I first had that salad at a restaurant in Bothell, Washington and they charged $12 for the salad for lunch.

Hope that helps.

What are some simple, healthy breakfast ideas?

Julia

I have to leave early to school every morning, and all I pretty much eat is a bowl of cereal, and I get hungry fast, before 4th period. I want some recipes, that are fast, and yummy. And making pancakes takes me FOREVER, by the way, so nothing like that. And, I'm not really a fan of frozen breakfasts like toaster strudels. I want healthy meals, too, that aren't too fattening. Thanks so much!

Answer
Got a crockpot? Make OLD FASHIONED or steel cut (Irish) oatmeal in a crockpot while you sleep, You can add some things to pep it up-like honey, raisins, chopped dates, walnuts, pecans, dried cranberries, cinnamon, nutmeg, canned pumpkin (yep, it's good!), sliced apples, brown sugar. I make enough to last 3-4 days and store the rest in the refrigerator then zap in the microwave in the morning. Quick, easy, VERY healthy, and good for the waistline, too. If you like cheese grits, you can make those in the crockpot, too.

Another healthy option is to make a breakfast sandwich with a good quality whole grain bread--like Ezekiel--with peanut butter, honey, and sliced bananas.

You can also cook some turkey burgers the night before (freeze or refrigerate the extras), zap in the microwave to warm in the morning, and put a patty on Ezekiel bread toast along with your favorite condiment and eat like a breakfast sandwich as well.

Plain unflavored yogurt mixed with some frozen fruit, chopped walnuts, and a drizzle of honey also is a great way to start the day!

I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW I CAN LOOSE MY BELLY FAT I JUST HAD A BABY 9 MONTHS AGO AND IT STILL LOOKS LIKE IM 6 MONTHS PREGNANT? I CAN'T LOOSE MY BELLY OR LOOSE WEIGHT PLEASE PLEASE HELP IM 20 YEARS OLD AND I WANNA LOOK SEXY AGAIN?

Answer
Adopt a healthier lifestyle and and you will often lose weight as a bonus. Learn strategies to help you look and feel better!

Calculate your daily energy output kJ. Looks complicated but isn't.

Women [655.1 + (9.56 x weight kilograms)+ (1.85 x height centremetres) - (4.68 x age years)] x 4.2
Men [664.7 + (13.75 x weight kilograms)+ (5 x height centremetres) - (6.76x age years)] x 4.2
Multiply the kJ amount by the following factor depending on your lifestyle: 1.2 = sedentary, 1.375 = lightly active (1-3 days a week exercise), 1.55 = moderately active 3 -5 days exercise or sport, 1.725 = very active hard exercise 6-7 days/week, 1.9 = extremely active hard daily exercise or sport or physical job.

Keep a food journal for a week or two. Write down all that you eat. Include snacks, cups of coffee, etc. - it all adds up. You may be surprised how much you are consuming in between meals.
Use the journal to help understand when it is you might eat foods that are high in kJ and find ways to cut them out and replace those items with healthier choices. For example, if you crave sugar in the afternoon replace sugary snacks with fresh fruit.
Work out what energy you are actually expending daily and find ways to increase your level of activity. You don't necessarily need to join a gym. Simple changes can add up. Try parking as far away from the shops as you can and walk in. Climb the stairs, rather than riding the elevator. Dance while you vacuum. Play actively with the kids instead of just watching TV.
Focus on attaining good health, rather than feeling deprived or "on a diet". Losing weight is frequently the result of living a healthier lifestyle
Try to stick to three meals a day. Breakfast - eg. high fibre cereal with low fat milk, lunch eg. wholemeal sandwich with lean filling OR a salad with no fat dressing, dinner eg. Protein (meat, fish or poultry - all lean cuts and skinless with lots of vegetables or salad and minimal amount (not necessarily no) carbohydrates. Healthy snacks are OK especially if they help you from getting so hungry that you eat foods you shouldn't.

Tips
A possible diet: a bowl of Special K cereal for breakfast, a jelly sandwich with trans-fat free bread and an apple for lunch, salmon and green-beans for dinner. Snacks can include carrots, celery or a banana.
Find snacks that you love that are healthy, such as fresh fruit, raw vegetables, low-fat yogurt or cottage cheese, and be sure to stock them in your pantry. Limit yourself to two snacks each day. If you crave more than two snacks, chomp on a piece of gum for a few hours.
Don't shop when you are hungry. Have a healthy snack and a glass of water before heading to the grocery store.
Increase your daily fibre intake. Pick whole meal bread, and whole grains (bulgar wheat, quinoa).
Try a daily walk. It is a great exercise for weight loss. You can go at your own pace. If you walk with a friend it is mentally uplifting to chat and support each other.
Add strength training to your exercise plan to build lean muscle. While aerobic exercise (like walking) helps burn calories, anaerobic (or strength-building) exercise can help boost your metabolism.
Add one or two extra vegetables to your evening meal that you would usually not eat. Try new recipes with unfamiliar ingredients to keep your eating plan interesting and fun.
Use non stick cookware or barbeque to limit oils and fats.
Go crazy with herbs and strong flavours to make your meals very tasty and satisfying - potentially you'll eat less.
Use a smaller plate.
Clear up left overs before sitting down to avoid second helpings
Drink lots of water 2 litres/day (approx. 64 oz). Drink a glass of water about 20 mins before dinner to help you feel full.
Put your knife and fork down instead of loading it up while you chew. Eating more slowly allows your body to be in time with your brain so that by the time you "feel" full you haven't already over eaten.
Avoid/limit alcohol (3-4 standard drinks/week)- it reduces you ability to lose fat as well as making it harder to resist temptation.
Measure your loss by how your clothes feel on you and only weigh yourself once every couple of weeks. Take your measurements once a month to judge your weight loss in inches as well as pounds.
Find a friend who wants to feel better too and use each other for support.
Listen to slow music while you eat. It's been proven to help you eat slower, which helps you lose weight.
Avoid processed foods. Anything that comes in a package is usually full of fats, sugars and salts. Know what you're eating in advance.

Warnings
You should see a health professional before undertaking any diet or exercise plans.
There is NO safe way to lose weight fast. You should aim for lifestyle changes that support better eating and add some exercise that is suited to you personally, as prescribed by your doctor. Gradual weight loss is better and also tends to be longer lasting in most people.

Fat flush water? Anyone try it?

Vanilla_tw

Recipe:

Water
1 slice grapefruit
1 tangerine
½ cucumber, sliced
2 peppermint leaves
Ice

I know it obviously doesn't "flush fat" (duh)

Has anyone tried it? Did it reduce bloating? Make you feel more energetic? Taste good (it does sound good!)?

What about adding ginger to it?

Thanks

You supposedly drink 3 8ounce glasses a day for ten days straight.

Answer
Sounds like another one to those stupid Dr. Oz recipes…If he’s so good, how come his audience is made out of overweight women who obviously look out of shape…They’re probably too busy listening to him, taking notes about what to eat/drink instead of warming up, stretching, staying in their THR zone and actually start burning fat reserves after 20 minutes…Maybe they should watch him on TV from home while zoning out biking on their stationary bikes.

I remember a show Ellen did when she used a stationary bike the whole show, which is like 40 minutes if you skip the ads, so she probably did a 5 minutes warm up, some stretching for 10 minutes, got up into her THR zone, stayed there for the minimum 20 minutes then cooled down for 5 minutes…She used a low intensity speed so she could still talk to her guests without being out of breathe. Her guests also had to warm up and stretch backstage and use a stationary bike on stage! The only problem I saw with that show is that the audience was still supposed to just sit and watch…she missed a great opportunity to be like Oprah but instead of “you got a car, you got a car, you got a car” (everybody know cars, among other things, is what make Americans fat and Oprah is obese), she could have said “your got a bike, you got a bike, you got a bike” (Ellen is fit) and have a special audience that would have nonchalantly biked with her (being cleared by medical checkups and wearing proper exercise clothes…) like when she has a special audience of pregnant women for mother’s day or a special audience of breast cancer survivors all wearing pink.

As you said, it won’t “flush fat” (so why do they call it “fat flush water” then?? Treating people like they’re stupid?).
Body fat cannot be flushed out like bacteria, water soluble vitamins or minerals.
I can only be used, provided that you eat enough to cover your BMR + growth (if you’re -21yo) and then exercise for 3,500 calories for each pound of fat reserves that you wish to lose.

You could be bloated because you’re about to have your period so accept it as you want a fluider blood to avoid cramps.
You could be bloated because you ate too much salty food and processed commercial food, restaurant food, cans (they use sodium as a conservative) without compensating with diuretics so eat healthier.

Diuretics are drinks like alcohol, tea, coffee, sodas (anything with caffeine), cranberry juice, and food like cucumbers, watermelons, fresh tomatoes, asparagus, artichokes, beets, carrots, lettuce, raw onions, oats, melon, celery, parsley and any veggie from the cabbage family...cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, Chinese broccoli (kay-lan), Chinese cabbage (bok choy), cress, cauliflower, turnips, kale, collard greens, mustard, canola (rapeseed), radish, horseradish, rutabaga, and 20 others...

To avoid dehydration when eating diuretics, you need to compensate the water loss (diuretics) with water retention (sodium).
I will combine cauliflower/ham in a casserole, or a slice of ham with a sandwich containing lettuce, tomato and onion (lettuce/fresh tomato/raw onion are the trifecta of diuretics in a sandwich) or eating sauerkraut with sausages and corned beef with cabbage.

Now, about reducing bloating (when you’re not having your period), water will do that by flushing out the sodium that makes you retain water. Yep…the more water you drink, the more you dehydrate by flushing out your sodium (that’s how you get food poisoning if you drink too much water too fast which is life threatening when you deplete your electrolytes…marathoners should drink sports drinks, not water).

If you don’t like the taste of water (which really, should have no taste, just freshness and thirst quenching coolness) you can filter it, or buy it filtered (some companies use tap water and filter it to Neverland) or buy more expensive pristine source water (different sources have different minerals). If you really cannot find tasteless water, you might add some mint or drops of lemon to it or stop drinking water but start eating high water content food, fruits/veggies, soups…

California Grilled Veggie Sandwich

"I came up with this recipe to entertain friends. Since I am a semi-vegetarian and love to BBQ, I am always inventing something new. The first time I made this, my meat-lover friends raved about this dish! I prefer mesquite coals over gas barbeques...however, either works fine."

Original recipe yield: 4 servings.
Prep Time:30 MinutesCook Time:20 MinutesReady In:50 MinutesServings:4

INGREDIENTS:

1/4 cup mayonnaise
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/8 cup olive oil
1 cup sliced red bell peppers
1 small zucchini, sliced
1 red onion, sliced
1 small yellow squash, sliced
2 (4-x6-inch) focaccia bread pieces, split horizontally
1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese

DIRECTIONS:

In a bowl, mix the mayonnaise, minced garlic, and lemon juice. Set aside in the refrigerator.
Preheat the grill for high heat.
Brush vegetables with olive oil on each side. Brush grate with oil. Place bell peppers and zucchini closest to the middle of the grill, and set onion and squash pieces around them. Cook for about 3 minutes, turn, and cook for another 3 minutes. The peppers may take a bit longer. Remove from grill, and set aside.
Spread some of the mayonnaise mixture on the cut sides of the bread, and sprinkle each one with feta cheese. Place on the grill cheese side up, and cover with lid for 2 to 3 minutes. What kind of HEALTHY recipes can I make with whole wheat Pita bread and Tortillas?

Q. I love vegetables and I need some healthy recipes for whole wheat pita bread and whole wheat tortillas... what can i make with them? Thanks.

Answer
I like to fill pita with hard salami and parsley (you could substitute leaner meat, though). Parsley is a great sandwich green and is friggin' loaded with vitamins and minerals.

Another favorite of mine is to make enchiladas with home-made red sauce. (Use lean meat like chicken breast and use a low-fat cheese. Authentic Mexican food doesn't have as much cheese as Americanized Mexican food anyhow.)

Red sauce:
Heat a few Tbsp. of oil in a 2qt. pot and add an equal amount of flour. Heat and stir until the combo (roux) bubbles for a minute or so.
Add ~1/2 cup of paprika (sounds weird, but bear with me...) and a little cayenne or other spicy ground red pepper to taste and continue to stir. You may need to add a little more oil.
Once this is mixed thoroughly and heated (you want the paprika to toast a bit) add ~ 1 1/2 c. water and stir with heat until the sauce thickens. (If sauce is too thick, add more water. Too thin, add a little corn starch/water slurry. You want it to be kinda like pizza sauce consistency.)
Salt to taste.
Fill tortugas with chicken, cheese, onions, olives, cilantro, whatever the hell you want. Have fun with it!
Put ~a third of the sauce in the pan, layer the enchiladas on top, then spread the rest of the sauce on them. Top with a little more cheese.
Bake @ 375F for about 40 min (until sauce is bubbling and cheese browns a little).

I love this recipe and always make it with whole wheat tortugas (good source of fiber) and this red sauce (TONS of vitamin A and other antioxidants).

I never use a recipe, so your results may vary. But it's cheap and pretty easy, so a few practice batches won't be too hard.
(Everyone tells me that they're WAY better than anything from any Mexican restaurant they've had!)

We will have limited refrigeration capabilities. Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Thanks!

There have been vegan Olympic gold medalists and a vegan woman can create an ENTIRELY NEW,HEALTHY HUMAN BEING INSIDE OF HER. Many of these children stay vegan and grow up to be perfectly healthy adults. So just keep yourself educated about what you eat and don't let anyone tell you that a veg diet is lacking anything essential.

If you want to become a lacto-ovo vegetarian, the transition should be quite simple. Almost all meats have widely available commercial replacements. All that you have to do is replace any flesh in your diet (beef, pork, poultry, seafood) with meat analogs or just leave it out altogether.

You should keep in mind that a journey such as this can be quite short but should just be the beginning of a longer one to a plant-based diet with no animal products. This is because of the reality of factory farming in which animals that are kept alive to produce milk, eggs, etc suffer much more and longer than animals that are raised to a certain weight and then slaughtered.http://www.veganoutreach.org/whyvegan/
http://meat.org
Some people use the word "vegan" in reference to this idea, but be aware that applying that label to yourself should always come with the inclusion of wise activism and advocacy.http://www.veganoutreach.org/advocacy/index.html
Two extremely important examples of this are that you should never speak to someone about vegetarianism/veganism without their consent and genuine interest or as a comment on what they are eating AND your dietary beliefs should never be used as an introduction or explanation of who you are as a person. Veg*ism should be something that comes up AFTER people get to know you and they offer you a situation that makes it confusing to withhold the information/discussion. Also, if you are presented something that you choose not to eat or you are
ordering food/eating together somewhere/picking the best place to eat.

When you you hold off on the subject until it's necessary and then act like it isn't a big deal at all, people are usually surprised and WAY more interested and curious than if you were to bring it up when someone's eating or just using it as a conversation starter.

A responsible vegan ALWAYS studies the subject of their own health and how to keep their body completely provided for in every sense. http://www.veganhealth.org/sh
To neglect their body is to define a plant-based diet as unhealthy and is the opposite of helping the animals.

Just to clear things up, the vegetarian/vegan diet is not composed of salads, vegetables, fruit and fake meat. Fruits and vegetables are always important but they DO NOT make up the largest portion of any healthy diet.
A balanced plant-based diet includes grains(breads, pasta, rice, cereal), legumes(soy, beans, peas, lentils), fruit and vegetables.

Being vegan can be an art, one whose challenge is to take things that involve the suffering of the innocent and change them into something free of cruelty.

A vegan woman can create an ENTIRELY NEW,HEALTHY HUMAN BEING INSIDE OF HER. Many of these children stay vegan and grow up to be perfectly healthy adults. So just keep yourself educated about what you eat and don't let anyone tell you that a veg diet is lacking anything essential.

Technically the term "vegetarian" does imply that you don't consume anything that comes from the body of an animal that requires killing it. Many ingredients such as gelatin and glycerin are found in many candies, Fig-Newtons, and many of other foods as well as rennet found in many cheeses.
http://www.happycow.net/health-animal-ingredients.html
The best thing to remember is to take your time so that for example: when you are comfortable not eating beef and pork you can then give up chicken when you are sure you can make the commitment permanently.
Depending on your age or reliance on parents or regional options, it may not be best to give yourself a label. The important thing is to do your best to make progress and be committed to your compassion towards animals. Never put your focus onto what you or other people use to describe yourself.

If you meet someone that talks down to people for eating meat, dairy, etc or to you because they think they are "more veg" than you, laugh in their face and tell them they are a disgrace to the entire philosophy. People like this only hurt the idea of veg*ism AND the animals. The point of all of this is to live compassionately and and as free from cruelty as you can, all the while maintaining your health and a positive attitude. People who don't maintain either, need not open their mouths and represent our beliefs.

If you actually choose to read all of this, I hope it helps. If not, feel free to e-mail me if you have questions.

I recommend that you eat junk food as little as possible. You shouldn't even need a little bit everyday.
