Q. Just want to know some foods that are healthy and exotic that are good to eat, and the benifits, i heard avacodo was good,,, got any more?
thank you,.

Answer
Nine Exotic Foods You Need to Start Eating. Healthy eating is often difficult, with busy schedules and boring food choices. Profiled here are five exotic foods that are delicious and nutritious.

A number of people believe healthy eating is a way of life. They mix and match the five essential food groups with zest and success. Other persons, however, are unable to acquire such a ready habit. Hectic schedules and/or a general dislike of healthful foods interfere with their ability to maintain a proper diet.

Regardless of the reasons, eating healthy poses a daily struggle for many people. Research shows that seven out of eight adults across the world do not get enough nutrition from their daily diets. Equally alarming is the statistic that more than half of the global population is overweight or obese.

Provided here is a list of five exotic foods that you need to eat. These are intended to add a little excitement to the standard adage, “Eat your fruits and vegetables.” Each of these profiled foods is loaded with flavor, offers versatile cooking options and provides your body with the nutrients it needs.
*************************
Acai berries
Recent media attention has given acai berries the reputation of a super food. In truth, these relatives of the blueberry do contain powerful antioxidants. These are essential for combating free radicals, which are known to increase the aging process as well as promote disease. Antioxidants can promote improved digestion, sleep and energy. In short, acai berries contain similar properties to other fruits. They are different from their berry relatives in that acai berries also contain essential fatty acids like Omega-3s and are high in protein. Acai supplements and juices are available in vast quantity from a number of suppliers. If you prefer the real thing, acai berry recipes abound, ranging from breakfast bowls to crepe dishes.
***********************************
Avocados
The first-known written account of avocados dates back to 1518 in Colombia. Today, this precious fruit is enjoyed by people in a variety of ways. Some employ it as a substitute for meat, others spread it on bread and use it in dips, and still others layer it on sandwiches with chicken or beef. Aside from its creamy texture and subtle flavor, the avocado is highly-revered for its multiple health benefits. Every serving contains almost 20 vitamins. The avocado is known to positively impact cholesterol levels, contain a high amount of monosaturated fat and protect against circulatory diseases. Avocados also support eye health, ward off some types of cancer and lower the risk of stroke.
************************
Cacao beans
Many people refer to cacao as raw chocolate. In fact, these two foods do not necessarily mean the same thing. Cacao beans that pose the greatest health benefits are those that are unprocessed. Dark chocolate bars that contain at least 75% cacao are also extremely healthy. Recent health studies indicate cacao is perhaps one of the most beneficial foods in the world. It improves cognitive abilities, is rich in antioxidants and contains high levels of magnesium. Cacao also is known to increase serotonin and endorphins, so it genuinely does create bliss within those who eat it. Furthermore, cacao is extremely versatile. When ground into a powder, cacao can be used in a variety of power drinks, deserts, sauces and seasonings.
************************************
Habanero peppers
Although largely celebrated for their flavor, habanero peppers also possess a variety of health benefits. This is owing to capsaicin, which is the chemical found in peppers responsible for their heat. Those peppers with the most capsaicin actually are the healthiest. Habaneros pack a fiery punch and offer a host of health benefits. They are known to fight heart disease, trigger endorphins, improve circulation and reduce high blood pressure. Habanero peppers also contain vitamins A, C, E and B complex. These are great additions to a number of dishes and are commonly found in chili, soups and stews. Tex-Mex dishes, rice and meats are also complemented by the heat afforded by Hanaeros.
*****************************
Papayas
This tropical fruit and the tree from which it grows have many different uses. Among these are medicine, cooking and rope production. One of the foremost benefits of the papaya, however, is found in its nutrients when eaten. Enthusiasts enjoy rich vitamins and minerals as well as high levels of antioxidants when they opt for papayas. This fruit can also protect against heart diseases, promote digestive health and provide support to the immune system. Moreover, papayas contain folic acid and are a good source of dietary fiber. They can easily be incorporated into a number of recipes, including salads, deserts, drinks and salsas. The sweet buttery flesh of papayas also pairs well with seafood.
*****************************
SEA VEGETABLES, or “seaweed”
Quite frankly, sea vegetables are the most misunderstood and under-utilized food in Western culture! There are approximately 90 minerals identified in modern nutrition and ALL of them are represented in seaweed. Sea vegetables are higher in vitamins and minerals than every other food on the planet ounce for ounce; they contain 20-200% more minerals than land-based vegetables. Seaweed holds high levels of Vitamins C, D, K and B and has more Vitamin A than carrots.Seaweed is also very rich in protein and strengthens the kidneys and nervous system. When eaten consistently, sea vegetables calm hyperactivity, reduce stress and are excellent for the thyroid gland. People complain about the taste and the general rule of thumb with seaweed is this: the worse it tastes for you, the more you need it. Dulse, Kelp and Nori are excellent types.
*********************************
QUINOA
Quinoa (pronounced KEEN-WA) is an ancient whole grain, and has been consumed by people for more than 8,000 years. Quinoa has the highest nutritional profile of all grains. It contains high levels of dietary fiber and B Vitamins and has all 8 essential amino acids. Whole grains are some of the best sources for nutritional support, providing long-lasting energy (as a result of the body absorbing them slowly unlike simple carbs).Quinoa is high in zinc, potassium, calcium and Vitamin E and is known to strengthen the kidney and heart!
**********************************
KALE
It is well-known that leafy green vegetables are extremely nutritious and jam-packed with a wide array of vitamins. Energetically speaking, leafy greens contain a high concentration of chlorophyll, the “life-blood” of our planet…and Kale is the king of them! It’s never surprising to see studies on diet and disease that say “vegetables—especially green leafy vegetables—are associated with a lower risk of…” as they have a high concentration of Vitamins A, C and K, folate, potassium, magnesium, iron, lutein and phytochemicals. Phytochemicals are components of fruits or vegetables that may help to prevent disease, and perhaps even help to treat some disorders.Kale goes a step further and is also an incredible source of calcium, folic acid, vitamin B6, manganese, and potassium. For a green, Kale is unusually high in fiber and in many ways is a true superfood, and certainly one of the most nutritious foods known to man!
*******************************
BERRIES
Berries are the most natural food for human consumption and a cleanser for the human body. We spend so much time thinking about what we put in our bodies we forget the importance of what comes out Furthermore, berries are a wonderful source of Vitamins C, E, calcium and folic acid and are rich in phytochemicals.Berries are also an excellent source of dietary fiber, which has been linked to lowered cholesterol levels. Some forms have even shown to have anti-cancer properties in laboratory settings The goji berry, the #1 food in Chinese medicine, is one of the highest anti-oxidant foods on the planet and well-worth looking into!
**************************************
Healthy Foods and Their Place in Daily Lifestyles. Some argue that healthy foods are not as palatable as traditional favorites. For example, a juicy hamburger and side order of French fries are often much preferred to a salad and dish of apple slices. Healthy eating can be achieved, though, and this is possible with foods that are sweet, savory and delicious.

Look around your local grocery store and shop for healthy alternatives to common mainstays. This will help you slowly add healthy foods to your diet. Emerging studies now suggest that people do not have to necessarily eliminate their intake of unhealthy foods, but rather increase the amount of good foods they eat. Thus, you can have your cheeseburger and papaya, too.

Vegan moms: Are you raising your children to be vegan as well?

chloe

I have an 8month old, and I 'm thinking of raising her vegan. What are your experiences? Give me some info to help me make up my mind. What do your kids eat instead of meat and dairy?
Wow Harry D, your answer has so much insight! I think I might choose you for a best answer!!! Go waste somebody else's time.

Answer
yes. 3rd generation vegetarian. all doing very well...from age 90s to babies.

hubby and i have had nothing but positive experiences feeding our kids vegan...in fact, it's no big deal. being vegan is a way of life. i can remember back in the 70s and 80s when you couldn't even find a restaurant or airline that served a decent vegetarian meal so you were relegated to eating most meals at home or packing a meal to go. now we can fine dine in or out...my how things have changed.

today, we eat breakfasts such as smoothies, oatmeal, and peanut butter toast. (follow the link below to get two vegan kid taste testers responses to these yummy smoothies) Or we might have grits, scrambled tofu, vegetable patties, and orange juice. or we might have oatmeal waffles topped with fruit and served with a side of soy yogurt topped with nuts or granola. for recipes for these and more ideas visit: www.tpbooks.biz and check out the books "the daniel diet: preface to prophecy" or "presto! it's raw vegan pesto!"

For lunch, we have combos such as oven fried potatoes (lightly oil pan with olive oil and place potato wedges in sprinkled with rosemary and lightly salted) and "subway" sandwiches...our take on the franchise standard. we layer up with veggies like lettuce, tomato, olives, onions, and the works. then instead of mayonnaise (which has egg in it), we use vegannaise by the brand 'target your heart'. it is so delicious ...everyone who taste tests this and other vegan food is always astounded that it can be so easy to prepare, and downright delicious, not just "sacrificially healthy". Instead of cheese, we whip up a vegetarian alternative made with cashews or you can buy the 'target your heart' brand of cheddar cheese. just so you know i am not an employee of 'target your heart" they just happen to be what tastes good, is vegan, and what we eat. for a whole book of cheese replacements, get the book, "the uncheese cookbook" by Joanne Stepaniak.

if you happen to live near a Seventh day Adventist church, college, university, hospital, or academy, stop in regularly and eat in their cafeterias to get a feel about what vegetarian meals look like in action (several research studies have been done on Adventists because they are known for their vegetarianism. Thus if you visit any of their institutions, you will likely find the whole range of vegetarian options). (ie. if you live in the Los Angeles, California area, check out Loma Linda University's cafeteria or even Loma Linda Medical Center cafeteria).

if you want some compelling reasons for why vegan and children can be a perfect combination, get the book, "the china study" the largest study of its kind on the best nutrition to eat. this was done by a research scientist who attests that even he realized solid reasons why this would be a beneficial diet to follow based on what he has discovered over the years in the labs and he converted his own family to follow better eating as a result. now he is working in the government and you've gotta get his book...it is quite compelling indeed.

good luck with that. ps. we also steer clear of candies, icecream, sodas, etc. our delicious and preferred replacements for these are:

instead of gummy worms we eat dried cantaloupe slices (they look at taste BETTER than gummy worms)

instead of sodas, we drink water (we don't even drink alot of juices on the market because the words "natural coloring" on the label could be ground insects that are red and being used for their pigment in otherwise vegan products...can you say gross??!

instead of icecream, we just freeze bananas and run them through our Champion juicer (or if you don't have one of those, add Silk brand soymilk to your blender and then add frozen bananas) the kids lapp this up!

there is so much to say on this topic, but suffice it to say, you won't be without taste, pleasure, or nutrition when vegan done right is implemented. good luck!

Answer
Some foods i reccommend putting on the grill are:
- Chicken
- Salmon
- Tilapia

All low in Calories and really healthy.

Along with those healthy meat choices you could steam some vegeatables on the grill as well.

Wrap some carrots, brocoli, squash, and cucumber slices up in some foil && add some Worcheshire sauce on top, and grill'em for about thirty minutes.

Corn on the cobb is good && good for you.

Brown rice is a good choice as well.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
For some lunchtime meals.

i reccommend tuna fish on wheatbread.
carrot sticks with low fat rach.
fruit.
&& water.

turkey sandwich on wheat bread with light mayo, and tomatos and/or pickles.
baked chips, and a fruit.
-----------------------------------------------

Snacks you can go with a piece of fruit, some kinda raw veg like celery or carrots.
a nutrigrain bar or granola bar.

drink lots of water.

What are some healthy cheap meals to make?

you.go.gir

I would appreciate your input :)

What are some recipes or foods to buy that are healthy and cheap???

I'm wondering what foods I can eat that's not too much and lasts

Answer
This is a question I struggle with daily. Unfortunately the healthy stuff tends to be more expensive than the not-so-healthy stuff (produce mainly). There are some good tips I have discovered over the years. More recently I've been doing much of my shopping at WalMart. their prices are great and they carry almost all the foods you would want.

So, here goes....
Pasta is always an option.... try Ronzoni's Smart taste... it has tons of fiber and calcium in it and tastes just like regular pasta. And marinara sauces are low in fat/cal and cheap to make or buy.

If you like beans and corn, one of my favorites is a black bean salsa (goya black beans are great), canned sweet corn, some diced red onion, a minced jalapeno, lime juice and cilantro. It's great with chips or with chicken breast made with mexican spices. Use plain strained yogurt in place of sour cream.

Also, try a can of white northern beans in the food processor with some fresh and roasted garlic. Add a litttle milk or water to slightly thin this mixture. Add salt, pepper, and a touch of olive oil and a pinch of dried thyme. Use this on a low fat pizza crust (Wal Mart sells one for 44cents that is so simple... you just add water) instead of pizza sauce. top with shredded chicken, brocccoli, onions, whatever and top with part skim shredded mozz. Bake about 12 minutes and finish with a touch of olive oil.

okay... some cheap fish.... if you like fish.... tilapia is great and usually about 7.99/pd. take a portion size fillet and put it in a parchment or foil pouch with some lemon juice a touch of olive oil or Brummel and Brown (my personal favorite butter substitute made with yogurt) and fresh herbs and veggies. super healthy, tasty, and cheap depending on your veggie choice. Serve with brown rice.

Potatoes are also very cheap, so make baked wedges or a traditional baked potato. There are also several good low fat cheese products out there. not always cheap,, but.look for coupons for laughing cow, alpine lace. Baked potato with broccoli and diet cheese is one of my favorite dinners.

Also a good idea is buying a whole turkey breast or roaster chicken and using it for several applications. slice turkey for sandwiches (I love Arnolds double the fiber whole grain bread) or in salads. Lettuce is pretty cheap, and try making your own croutons!

obviously i could go on and on, if you'd like more ideas contact me through my website, www.completelyculinary.com

About how many sandwiches will a can of shredded chicken make?

healthy tuna salad sandwich recipe no mayo

healthy tuna salad sandwich recipe no mayo image

ROCKER_CHI

I am making shredded chicken sandwiches for my daughters birthday. I am just using the big can of the boned chicken, half of a box of Ritz crackers, and a big can of cream of chicken. About how many sandwiches do you think that will make? I don't know whether to double it up or not...
Its like the giant can! Im not sure how much but it usually fills a crockpot!

Answer
Probably only two if you don't mix the shredded chicken up with chopped lettuce & mayo.... if only mayo on the bread & the shredded chicken, then two.... if you are gonna make a chicken salad with it, then about 3.... =)
A can of tuna says 2.5 servings but really only think of it as two if not mixing with chopped lettuce, sugar, mayo, etc.... I use one can tuna per tuna salad sammy recipe which I put 2 cups chopped lettuce, mayo, etc, in & still only get 3 sammies.... =)
But you did say a big can so it may be bigger than the little tuna cans. In that case just read the serving size & servings per container on the nutrition label. If it says half a serving (2.5 servings) just round down. =)

For the little amount of chicken you get per can, it's cheaper to buy a bag of frozen chicken breasts if money is a factor.... =)

Just like a can of Spag-Os, cannot understand it.... it's high in sodium, you practically have to eat the whole can for one person to be satisfied & it's like baby mush.... buying a jar of spag. sauce & cooking some spag or elbow noodles is soo much cheaper/serving, wayyy healthier, & you get way more than one serving.... go figure... =/

I usually eat pretty healthy foods for breakfast and lunch, but when it comes to dinner, my family tends to go for more of the fried foods. Right now, dinner is often a lot of white rice and some fried meat (chicken, steak, etc.) ... :p
What are healthy alternatives that aren't that hard to prepare?

Answer
You could try switching the white rice to brown/wild rice, or trying quinoa instead sometimes. With salmon or grilled tofu. As well as adding vegetables, like broccoli, green beans, carrot, cauliflower, asparagus, zucchini, etc and or a salad. If you can use organic natural ingredients.

Here are some healthy dinner food ideas:

~ Pasta dish with whole grain or brown rice pasta.
For example, with tomato sauce or basil pesto sauce, baby spinach, goat cheese or shredded cheese. Or a pasta salad with baby spinach or grilled vegetables, goat or mozzarella cheese, chopped cherry tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, etc.

~ Salad: mixed baby greens, baby romaine, baby spinach, Italian salad mix, romaine lettuce, etc. with things like cherry tomatoes/tomato, cucumber, low-fat salad dressing or olive oil/vinegar, red onion, dried cranberries, goat or feta crumbles, walnut crumbles or almond slithers, grated carrot, etc.

~ Vegetables - steamed, grilled, etc. You can also try adding a drizzle of olive oil on them, balsamic vinaigrette dressing, lemon - for more flavor.

~ Salmon + wild/brown rice or sweet potato or potato or quinoa + veggies and/or salad.
- For the potato you could make oven fries with olive oil & a sprinkle of salt, basil. To make healthy creamy mashed potatoes try goat cheese added in and for sweet potatoes mashed with cinnamon.

~ Omelets with baby spinach & cheese.

~ Sandwiches.
(On whole grain bread like multigrain, ezekiel, rye, whole wheat pita, whole grain tortilla, etc.)
- Smoked salmon & cream cheese
- Pesto, tomato, baby spinach & mozzarella melt
- Falafel & hummus
- Almond or Peanut butter & jam - nut butter with no added sugar
- Egg & cheese, egg white & spinach in a whole grain tortilla, with cheese like 1-2 tbsp goat cheese
- Chickpea wrap (with things like grated carrot, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, mixed baby greens, salad dressing, etc.)
- Black bean wrap with salsa & some cheese; or a quesadilla on a whole grain tortilla
- Veggie burger
- Hummus, lettuce, grated carrot, sliced cherry tomatoes in a whole wheat pita half

~ Vegetables like broccoli, carrot, yellow & green zucchini, mushrooms, red onion stir fried in olive oil with tofu, served with wild/brown rice of whole grain noodles.

What is a good diet for someone trying to stay healthy?

Vickey

I want to go on a diet to be healthy, but I don't want it to have to be too hard. I work out a lot, and am very fit, but I feel that I am not making the healthiest choices when it comes to eating. What should I do when it comes to disciplining my food choices?

Answer
Thats great that your active and want to eat healthy :)
Go for natural, organic foods. Eat smaller portions more often rather than big portions less often. Avoid things like soda, diet soda or any diet drinks, artificial colors or sweeteners, too much sugar, overly processed foods. Remember to drink plenty of water. Green tea is great to =) As well as water with lemon which is cleansing, good for your skin, digestive system.

You can also try out healthier alternatives with food.
Examples:

- Replace fast food french fries with homemade sweet potato or regular fries (made with a touch of olive oil, salt)

- For chips, you could try natural sweet potato chips, pita chips, fat free popcorn, pop chips or a natural potato chip brand like Kettle. You can also make your own chips by thinly slicing potatoes or sweet potatoes, glazing with olive oil, sprinkling with salt (pepper, basil if you'd like - cinnamon goes well with sweet potatoes) & baking them.

- Replace candy with things like frozen grapes or banana slices, dried mango strips, dried blueberries/cranberries/cherries/papaya, raisins, etc.

- Try a veggie burger on a whole wheat bun, topped with some things you like.

- If you want soda, try cold sparkling water with lemon or mixed with 100 % organic fruit juice instead

- Replace white pasta with whole grain in pasta dishes + add veggies (for example adding baby spinach to pasta, grilled vegetables to lasagna, broccoli/grated carrot/spinach/kale to pasta salad, etc.

- For a creamy pasta sauce try tomato sauce with goat cheese mixed in, for a healthier dish

- Enjoy pizza, try it on thin multigrain crust topped with fresh veggies.

- For healthier treat options try things like: frozen yogurt, vanilla greek yogurt with berries & grated dark chocolate, whole grain baked goods, etc. Desserts are fine in moderation :)

Here is a list with some healthy food ideas :)

~ Greek yogurt or yogurt (nonfat) - Greek yogurt has more protein than regular yogurt
~ Eggs, cheese, cottage cheese (2% is fine), goat cheese, skim milk or goat milk, etc.
~ Vegetables
~ Fruit & Berries
~ Beans (chickpeas, black beans, kidney beans, mixed beans, etc.) - full of fiber and protein :)
~ Veggie burgers (Amy's makes great veggie burgers)
~ Whole grain breads: multigrain bread, ezekiel bread, rye bread, whole wheat pitas, whole grain tortillas or bagels, etc.
~ Whole grain pasta or brown rice pasta, brown/wild rice, quinoa, buckwheat, etc.
~ Sweet potatoes or potatoes
~ Hummus
~ Oatmeal - great source of fiber, you can add toppings like: almond butter or peanut butter, nuts, fresh berries/fruit, raisins, dried fruit like cherries/cranberries/blueberries, cinnamon, skim milk or non-dairy milk, nonfat greek yogurt, jam, honey, agave nectar, maple syrup, etc.
~ Healthy cereals (Kashi, Nature's Path Organic, etc..high in fiber like raisin bran)
~ Nuts, seeds, almond butter, peanut butter
~ Non-dairy milks like soy, almond or rice milk
~ Ground flax seed to add into a smoothie, top yogurt, etc.
~ Olive oil, good healthy fat, great for stir frys with lots of veggies.
~ Salmon & Tuna
~ Tofu & Tempeh - are great in sandwiches, wraps, on salads, etc.

My husband and I are overweight, we want to learn to eat healthy first before we count calories or any of that. I heard things that are all natural are the best. Nothing in a box or can. That type of thing and I know drinking lots of water is good. Exercise, I know but Im concerned with different types of healthy foods and herbs. Natural stuff. Any suggestions or comments?Any advice would b great. Thanks

Answer
(End of my answer...)

Herbs are anything you like. I usually plan recipes before going shopping to get all the ingredients and add herbs and spices to my pantry according to the recipes. The 20 I used the most are basil, bay leaf, chervil, chili powder, chives, cilantro, dill, garlic powder, marjoram, nutmeg, onion powder, oregano, paprika, parsley, rosemary, sage, savory, tarragon, thyme and turmeric.
I use fresh garlic and onions but in some cases, you need the powder. And I also use ginger if I have nausea (one tsp in water will do wonders to settle a stomach). I bought turmeric after reading an article about all its benefits. Plus it’s a cousin of ginger, which I do not use for cooking (just for medicinal purposes) and it is not as gingery as ginger but smells/tastes great and goes well with chicken, rice, beans and lentils.

Keep your empty bottles of herbs, so you can reuse them for your favorite recipes. Fill the bottle ¾ with your favorite mixture (to have room to shake it up before use) so you don’t have to constantly measure one tsp of this and one tsp of that and ¼ of tsp of some other thing. For example, when I do my skinless legs and/or thighs rotisserie chicken (I only like the dark meat) I mix salt, paprika, chili powder, garlic powder, black pepper, onion powder and thyme in my empty container and that will last me half a dozen rotisserie chicken recipes. Then I wash my chicken parts, dry them, cover them with my herbs mixture and 45 minutes later, I have the best chicken ever...free range, organically fed, low fat as it is skinless and cooked without added fats and you get all the flavors of the herbs and spices since you don’t have to discard the skin as there is no skin.
Then you can prepare ¼ inch sliced red potatoes with basil, oregano, thyme, onion powder, garlic, salt, pepper and olive oil. You toss to coat and grill for 9 minutes (I use a Foreman G5 that grills both sides at the same time), when your chicken if 10 minutes away from being cooked.

About that other answer you got...

White bread is good when you want something light and unfulfilling before a meal (like amuse-gueules).

Negative calorie food is a stupid idea as if you eat a 75 calories egg then you would need 100 calories to digest it...IF you only eat that. Who only eats one egg? It would be like washing a single t-shirt in a washing machine...lots of wasted energy for little output. Add the t-shirt to a load of wash and you won’t use more water or energy. You’d be better off exercising for 3 minutes than trying to lose 25 calories by eating an egg and nothing else.

Cabbage is good as any veggies from the cabbage family like Brussels sprouts, broccoli, Chinese broccoli (kay-lan), Chinese cabbage (bok choy), cress, cauliflower, turnips, kale, collard greens, mustard , canola (rapeseed), radish, horseradish, rutabaga, and hybrids like broccoflower (broccoli/cauliflower...green cauliflower and also Romanesco broccoli) or broccolini (broccoli/kay-lan) and 15 others...
BUT they’re powerful diuretics like alcohol, tea (anything with caffeine like coffee or sodas), cranberry juice, and food like cucumbers, watermelons, fresh tomatoes, asparagus, artichokes, beets, carrots, lettuce, raw onions, oats, melon, celery and parsley.
I eat diuretics with salty food as to not have to fight dehydration by having to drink too much water and also be bothered by having to pee a lot. You’re not peeing more because you drink but because of the effect of the diuretics and drinking more water just helps you not dehydrate.
This is why some recipes have ingredients that complete one another, like the “corned beef and cabbage” recipe I’ll cook for St. Patrick’s Day or sauerkraut/sausage combination, cauliflower/ham casserole, adding ham/bacon to your lettuce, tomato, onion sandwich, crunchy celery in your tuna salad, salty vinaigrette with artichokes or asparagus. If you eat a fresh tomato like an apple, biting into it (a tasty organic one), it will taste better with some salt, same with radishes, as your body knows that those are powerful diuretics. I only eat peeled cucumbers that is thinly sliced and degorged in salt to get rid of the indigestible cucumber water, then I make a vinaigrette (without the salt as it’s salty enough since I disgorged it in salt).
People losing weight drinking/eating diuretics are losing water weight and dehydrating. If you can maintain your weight while eating cabbage, then you’re in trouble, because you’re dehydrating, so you should lose weight on a scale, not maintain it.

Have a piece of chocolate once in a while...the polyphenols in chocolate inhibit oxidation of LDL cholesterol plus it tastes yummy and makes you feel good. Do not deprive yourself of any food or it would become an obsession. Be in tune with your body and follow your food cravings. Chocolate cravings are usually a need to feel better (chocolate is an antidepressant).

Ideas for healthy school lunches, easy to make, can be heated up.?

I just started year 13, so now have access to the common room. This means we can use the jug, microwave, toastie machine, electric frying pan whenever we want. I just want some lunch ideas or recipes that are healthy and easy to make and some that will warm me up in the winter. So if you have any, please share.

Answer
Chili and a small bag of Frito's, piece of cheese. Heat in the microwave melt the cheese over and dump in the Frito's.. Yum!
Spaghetti and meat sauce. Keep in the thermos or heat in microwave.
Take 2 pieces of buttered bread in a baggie, and your choice of meat like pepperoni, turkey, ham, canadian bacon etc and a slice of cheese in seperate baggies. In the toastie machine make the sandwich and toast.
Well here browse through these pictures and you'll get some good ideas!

What kind of HEALTHY recipes can I make with whole wheat Pita bread and Tortillas?

healthy sandwich recipes
on Healthy Recipe: Tuna Pita Sandwich - Marquette Turner Luxury Homes ...
healthy sandwich recipes image
Q. I love vegetables and I need some healthy recipes for whole wheat pita bread and whole wheat tortillas... what can i make with them? Thanks.

Answer
I like to fill pita with hard salami and parsley (you could substitute leaner meat, though). Parsley is a great sandwich green and is friggin' loaded with vitamins and minerals.

Another favorite of mine is to make enchiladas with home-made red sauce. (Use lean meat like chicken breast and use a low-fat cheese. Authentic Mexican food doesn't have as much cheese as Americanized Mexican food anyhow.)

Red sauce:
Heat a few Tbsp. of oil in a 2qt. pot and add an equal amount of flour. Heat and stir until the combo (roux) bubbles for a minute or so.
Add ~1/2 cup of paprika (sounds weird, but bear with me...) and a little cayenne or other spicy ground red pepper to taste and continue to stir. You may need to add a little more oil.
Once this is mixed thoroughly and heated (you want the paprika to toast a bit) add ~ 1 1/2 c. water and stir with heat until the sauce thickens. (If sauce is too thick, add more water. Too thin, add a little corn starch/water slurry. You want it to be kinda like pizza sauce consistency.)
Salt to taste.
Fill tortugas with chicken, cheese, onions, olives, cilantro, whatever the hell you want. Have fun with it!
Put ~a third of the sauce in the pan, layer the enchiladas on top, then spread the rest of the sauce on them. Top with a little more cheese.
Bake @ 375F for about 40 min (until sauce is bubbling and cheese browns a little).

I love this recipe and always make it with whole wheat tortugas (good source of fiber) and this red sauce (TONS of vitamin A and other antioxidants).

I never use a recipe, so your results may vary. But it's cheap and pretty easy, so a few practice batches won't be too hard.
(Everyone tells me that they're WAY better than anything from any Mexican restaurant they've had!)

how to make a healthy sandwich wrap?

im on a diet. my goal is to lose weight, but i also don't mind staying the same weight.
the other day i had two yummy sandwich wraps, but from the grocery store. it had the white cheese, i think a little bit of mayo, lettuce, and meat (ham)
is that healthy, or too fattening?

i figured the mayo and cheese would make it unhealthy, so is there anyone who knows how to make a healthy sandwich wrap?

Answer
I'm at work right now, so I don't have the recipe on hand, but if you go check out this month's Better Homes and Gardens they have an awesome recipe for a BLT like wrap.. it only has like 275 calories in the entire thing and its GREAT!

What are healthy foods to eat for dinner?

healthy egg sandwich recipes for breakfast
on Easy, Healthy Egg Recipes for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
healthy egg sandwich recipes for breakfast image

heyy =]

~ Whole wheat pita pizza or multigrain thin crust pizza, with tomato or pesto; baby spinach, mozzarella, grilled vegetables, etc.

What are some healthy, easy meals\snacks for breakfast, lunch and dinner that I can make at home?
10 points for the most ideas for all the meals\snacks!

Answer
Breakfast:

- Egg whites (better for you than the whole egg) with a little salt and pepper, maybe some cheese to add flavor, on wheat toast.
- Grapefruit (it's sooo healthy for you, it can be a snack too)
- Cottage Cheese Pancakes: http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/recipes/351
- Oatmeal
- All fruit smoothie. Have non frozen fruit and add ice or use frozen fruit and add a little 100% fruit juice. You can make it a *healthy* milk shake by using low fat milk instead of juice and adding a little sugar (sugar isn't unhealthy in small amounts, but fake sugar like sweet and low and equal are bad for you)

Lunch/Dinner:

- Chicken breast with lemon pepper or other seasonings
- A spinach tortilla with chicken cooked in some bbq sauce. Add lots of lettuce and a little bit of light ranch (like a teaspoon, if even that).
- Salad- there are thousands of possible salads you can make but what I love doing is a bunch of lettuce, some spinach if you like that, salt, pepper, garlic (powder and only a small amount) and vegetables like tomatoes, cucumbers, or even carrots and peppers
- Taco Salad: brown some lean beef, drain any fat, add seasonings (McCormick has a taco seasoning packet for 50 cents). Make a bowl full of lettuce, tomatoes if you want, some beef, some cheese if you want, and tortilla chips if you want (less healthy version).
- Chicken in a bag- McCormick's has these awesome chicken bag seasonings where you throw chicken in the bag (they provide) with some carrots, potatoes, whatever you want, add the seasoning and bake for about an hour. One of my husbands favorites!
- Costco sells individual salmon fillets. Take one out of the fridge/freezer, season to your liking, throw on a pan, the grill, or in the oven and cook.
- a sandwich- between whole wheat bread slices, pita style, or wrapped up (spinach wraps are really delicious, or whole wheat wraps which I'm not a huge fan of).
- Make some quinoa or brown rice in a rice cooker or in a pot if you don't have one. Add some black beans, salt and pepper, and some mozzarella if it's still to bland. I like to add some sriracha (chili hot sauce) into the rice as it cooks and some garlic seasoning. It adds some kick and makes it taste really good without adding the sodium from cheese.

Snacks:
- peppers
- celery. If you hate it alone add some organic peanut butter (no preservatives) you can even go to many stores and grind your own peanuts into peanut butter.
- peas, green beans, cucumbers, tomatoes, other vegetables but not potatoes or corn.
- apples, pears, bananas, berries, grapefruit, and other fruits.
- some nuts or a homemade trail mix (raisins, peanuts, almonds, some dark chocolate chips, whatever else you want)

Dessert
- a small amount of dark chocolate is actually really good for you. The higher the cocoa content the better :) But only a small amount.

Those are my favorites but check out this site: http://www.lifehack.org/articles/lifehack/over-100-quick-and-easy-healthy-foods.html

for more options. There are an unlimited amount of healthy foods out there you just have to find what you like and stick with it :)

What are the easiest easiest recipes to control blood pressure?

healthy ham sandwich recipes image

joeygirl

My dad's doctor just recommended the DASH diet to control his blood pressure. He lives alone most of the time seeing i go to college out of state. I think the extent of his cooking skills are cereal and ham sandwiches which are not on the diet plan. What are some healthy cheap recipes to try to try out?

Answer
A bag of salad, and a bottle of vinaigrette or italian dressing. Get a container of cherry tomatoes for him to add, and he'll think he's a chef.

fresh (not frozen or canned) veggies and the microwave steamer bags, like the link below shows. Cut up the veggies, put them in the bag, and nuke 'em for whatever the bag says - usually 2-3 minutes. So easy even a dad can do it.

What are some vegetarian alternatives to lunch meat?

I'm becoming a vegetarian, and I'll be going to high school in the fall and packing a lunch. I was wondering, what are some meat-free alternatives to turkey or ham sandwiches? And what would be a good example of a healthy, vegetarian lunch?

What are some simple, yummy, healthy recipes?

dizzy r

I am looking for some easy, healthy, yummy recipes. Short preparation and cook time preferred. Please keep in mind that I'm a college student that works part time and I cannot spend tons of money either. Also, I do not eat chicken or pork. I prefer to eat seafood most of the time as it is lean and healthy. I eat beef very rarely because I prefer it over iron tablets. Thanks! :)

Answer
Stir fry - Put a bunch of vegetables in the wok with a touch of oil, serve over short grain brown rice.

Soup - Boil vegetables, throw in some noodles, drop in a raw egg or some cooked beans, how about a few shrimp.

Tortillas, beans & cheese. Slice in some tomatoe and avocado.

Sandwiches - Get nice crusty bread, good cheeses, fresh tomatoes, grilled vegetables, tuna fish. Also smoked fish on bagels.

Pilaf - Rice with herbs & seasonings, mix in toasted nuts & seeds, stir in some minced broccoli, carrot or cauliflower, cook using broth for more flavor, add fresh melon on top

Power

I am a diabetic on pills but I just need a diet that any healthy person would eat with low sugar.
8am- low carb yogurt, banana, cherrios & cinomin in it.
10am a couple cups of popcorn or a 1/2 an apple with peanut butter
noon-salad bar kind of salad or a healthy soup with whole grain crackers & meditaraniun I can't believe it's not butter
or a tuna sandwich with some broccoli & dip
3pm same snack as the one at 10am but the opposite one than the one I picked earlier
5pm a proten such as fish or chicken, 1 whole grain peice of break with butter, veggie & a sweet or baked potato
8 pm a yogurt to keep my sugar steady through the night & I believe the calcium is relaxing & it keeps me from getting hungry
Thanks any ideas or suggestion or comments are welcome

Answer
No, most of the things you've listed are not good for diabetics because they quickly turn into sugar.
Yogurt, bananas, & cheerios all quickly turn to sugar (even if it says sugar free).
Crackers, even whole wheat are high in carbs, dips & baked potatoes are even worse, so is corn (yes popped as well).

The best diet I found that is both healthy & balanced is the South Beach Diet. They give you easy recipes to follow. You can pick up the book at the library or buy it for a reasonable price at Amazon.com
I had such good success with it that the last time I went to the doctor, he told me: "whatever you're doing, keep it up." It lowered not only my sugar count, but my cholesterol & triglycerides as well.

HELP! How do I go about reaching my goal weight?

(:

I weigh about 185 and I am 5'7". 16 years old. Female. I am buying an Elliptical this Friday. If I use it for 20 minutes in the morning, and 45 minutes at night, would I reach my goal of 160 by September? I am going to try to change my eating habits as well, but I am very bad at eating well. What do you think I should eat? BTW... Almost everyone in my immediate family is over-weight. My mom hates to eat healthy, and she is the one who goes grocery shopping. I practically have to beat her to buy healthy things. Lol, just kidding. But my Dad recently found out he is a diabetic, so I think it would be easier for me to get her to buy healthy things. Do you have any recipes for snacks or dinner that would work for diabetics, and for my weight loss goal? Thanks so much!

Answer
An elliptical is a great idea except people tend to do the same workouts everyday on them you should remember to always change up the time and resistance on it. if your having trouble with the diet try compound digestion it works by eating 6 small meals a day an apple here half a sandwich there try to stay away from high fat foods duh... it keeps your metabolism burning all day and helps to prevent hunger, ....... good luck!

What Should I Bring In My Lunchbox?

healthy lunchbox sandwich recipes
on Healthy Sandwich Ideas | Healthy Lunch Ideas - Make Your Lunch Great!
healthy lunchbox sandwich recipes image

Chloe

I'm going to 7th grade and I want to lose weight. The lunches at our school are so fatty. I can skip lunch and go outside and get some chips and a coke, but that isn't healthy either. I was thinking about bringing a Special K Protein Shake, but I realize that I might give in to the food because it looks good and I'm hungry for FOOD. So what should I bring in my lunchbox?

Answer
I found this on internet, I'm sure this will help.
"Top tips for a healthy lunch box
• Always include fresh fruit and vegetables. Vary the selection to keep it interesting.
• Offer a variety of whole grain breads, rolls, pita bread and flat breads.
• Use avocado as a spread instead of butter or margarine.
• Use reduced fat dairy foods. Cheese and yoghurt are ideal.
• Kids need a serve of protein at lunchtime. Ensure you include lean meat, egg, peanut butter, chickpeas or tuna.
• Add a chilled bottle of water and limit juice.

Keep it fresh - packing the lunchbox
It’s important to keep food in the lunch box cold to inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria.

Pack the school lunch in an insulated lunch box and include a small freezer brick or freeze a bottle of water and pop it into the lunchbox to keep food cool.

Helpful tips for adding fresh fruit and vegetables to lunch boxes
• Kids like fresh fruit cut and ready to eat. Fruit salad is the ideal lunch box solution; it’s colorful, easy to eat and bursting with vitamins.
• Offer different seasonal fruits each day for a change in flavor, color and texture.
• Freeze fruits in the summer or for sport days. Simply pop the frozen fruit into a small seal-able plastic bag or airtight container.
• If including whole fruit in the lunchbox, select fruit that is a suitable size for a child to easily hold in their hand and eat (this is particularly important for younger children).
• Peel and slice or cut fruit if possible and choose seedless varieties of grapes, watermelon and Imperial mandarins.
• If you’re added tomato to sandwiches, place the tomato between fillings and not directly onto the bread. This prevents the bread becoming soggy.
• When using avocado, mash or drizzle with a little lemon or lime juice to prevent the avocado from discoloring.
• Mild tasting and crunchy lettuce varieties like Iceberg and Oak leaf and Lebanese cucumbers are ideal for kids.
• Add leftover (or cook extra) roast pumpkin or sweet potato to sandwiches, wraps and roll fillings. Naturally sweet and loaded with beneficial antioxidants, roast vegetables team well with a range of fillings.
• Make salads or salad sandwich fillings interesting by using a range of vegetables like grated carrot, snow pea sprouts, lettuce or rocket or baby spinach, sliced celery, tomatoes, avocado and cucumber.
• Use a vegetable peeler to slice cucumber into thin ribbons for sandwich fillings.

Fresh for Kids have created a 5 Day Healthy Lunch Box Meal Plan and a Quick, Recess, Lunch and Snack Recipe Booklet which are free to download to give parents some fun and healthy ideas for their children’s school lunch boxes."

Caesar Chicken Wrap
Caesar Dressing Recipe

2 Tbsp chopped Parsley
2 Tbsp Anchovy Paste
1 tsp Dijon Mustard
1 1/2 Tbsp fresh Lemon Juice
1/2 cup regular Mayonnaise (Best Foods, etc)
Combine all the above ingredients in a food processor and blend until the dressing is smooth.

Ingredients

2 Tortilla Wraps
2 Tbsp Olive oil
Romain Lettuce
2 boneless skinless Chicken Breasts
Handful of Croutons
Salt and Pepper

First you are going to want to roast the chicken breasts. Brush olive oil onto the chicken breasts. Grind a healthy amount of fresh pepper and salt onto them. Let them bake for 35 to 40 minutes at 375f.
When they are finished allow them to cool enough to handle them, and chop into 3/4 inch cubes.
Wash and dry several large leaves of the Romain lettuce.
Lay the wrap out and spread a medium thick layer of Caesar dressing across them.
Add a couple leaves of lettuce on top of that and heap on some cubed chicken and croutons.
Add a second bit of Caesar dressing onto the chicken, and finish off the wrap with as much Romain as you can stuff into it.

Directions
Lightly toast the rye bread.
Combined the drained tuna with the mayonnaise, celery, onion, salt and pepper in a bowl.

1 Leaf of Red or Green Leaf Lettuce

Directions

Take your bread, Toast it. Or Don't, it's your choice.Spread your Mayonnaise and Mustard.
Add your 6 slices of ham. Try to fold each piece to let a little air into the sandwich, it looks better, and I think it tastes better.
Add your Onion and tomato slices.Add Lettuce. Red leaf lettuce is a nice, delicate lettuce. But if you'd like a more crisp texture, try green leaf lettuce. Of course, feel free to experiment and make this sandwich your own!

Seafood all meats fruits veggies cheese so I wanna know what I can eat that will help. I'm going to be doing cardio exercises about everyday. I'll eat about 6 small meals a day to get my metabolism going and drink alot of water. If you have any other helpful hints that will be appreciated!

Answer
Here is a list of healthy foods :)
- Go for natural, organic food
- For fiber, go for plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, high fiber cereals that aren't high in sugar - for example bran cereals; oatmeal, brown/wild rice, sweet potato, whole grain breads, whole grain and brown rice pastas, nuts, nut butter, etc.
- For protein: beans, eggs, cheese in moderation, cottage cheese, tofu, tempeh, tuna, salmon, etc.

Protein & fiber, along with veggies & fruit will help keep you full =)

~ Greek yogurt or yogurt (nonfat) - Greek yogurt has more protein than regular yogurt
~ Eggs, cheese, cottage cheese (2% is fine), goat cheese, skim milk or goat milk, etc.
~ Vegetables
~ Fruit & Berries
~ Beans (chickpeas, black beans, kidney beans, mixed beans, etc.) - full of fiber and protein :)
~ Veggie burgers (Amy's makes great veggie burgers)
~ Whole grain breads: multigrain bread, ezekiel bread, rye bread, whole wheat pitas, whole grain tortillas or bagels, etc.
~ Whole grain pasta or brown rice pasta, brown/wild rice, quinoa, buckwheat, etc.
~ Sweet potatoes or potatoes
~ Hummus
~ Oatmeal - great source of fiber, you can add toppings like: almond butter or peanut butter, nuts, fresh berries/fruit, raisins, dried fruit like cherries/cranberries/blueberries, cinnamon, skim milk or non-dairy milk, nonfat greek yogurt, jam, honey, agave nectar, maple syrup, etc.
~ Healthy cereals (Kashi, Nature's Path Organic, etc..high in fiber like raisin bran)
~ Nuts, seeds, almond butter, peanut butter
~ Non-dairy milks like soy, almond or rice milk
~ Ground flax seed to add into a smoothie, top yogurt, etc.
~ Olive oil, good healthy fat, great for stir frys with lots of veggies.
~ Salmon & Tuna
~ Tofu & Tempeh - are great in sandwiches, wraps, on salads, etc.
~ Whole grain crackers
~ Whole grain waffles or pancakes
~ Dark chocolate, in small amounts, great for a treat

A few other helpful tips :)

- Drink green tea. Water + lemon (cleansing, great for your digestive system, skin)

- Avoid: soda, diet soda or any diet drinks, artificial colors or sweeteners, white flour, too much sugar, overly processed foods

- For exercise, you can also try things like simple walking or yoga/pilates - very healthy for you :)

What are some healthy, portable lunch ideas?

Starting in the fall, I will be in class from 9am to 4pm straight on a few days. I need ideas/recipes for lunches/snacks that I can make the night before and eat in class. A very important part of this is that these foods cannot be noisy or hard to eat so as to not disturb the rest of my class. Does anyone have any ideas?

Answer
-Soups
-Salads with carrots, cucumbers, onions, tomatos, olives, add chicken for protein!
-Sandwiches, like cold cuts, with lettuce, tomatoes, on rolls
-Wraps, use cold cuts like ham or even grilled chicken and lettuce, tomatos, on tortillas, and cut in half.
-cheese with fruits cut up and crackers
-fruit salad and sprinkle with lemon juice so it doesn't turn brown by the time you eat it. You won't taste the lemon!
-chicken fingers
-Any leftovers from the night before's dinner made into a sandwich. If you had a flank steak, add some argula and you have a great sandwich, have fried chicken, bring that, chicken cutlets, put that on bread with lettuce and tomatos and you have a great sandwich! You can always bring leftovers! If you made beef stew, keep it in a thermos like the soup and bring that, it's hearty and it's comfort food!
-pizza, you can bring a few slices with you.
-Egg salad in bowl or on a sandwich
-Tuna on a sandwich or tuna salad on sandwich or in a bowl
-Hard boiled eggs in a salad
-You can always bring like an antipasto, which is the cold cuts, some cheeses, lettuce, tomato, bread, etc, in a tupperware container with a fork, and just eat it as you please. Add some olives in it. It's VERY filling!
-Pasta salad

I hope some of these ideas help!

Q. Do you have a unique sandwich idea? I prefer healthy sandwiches (no bologna), but I'm getting bored with my usuals. What are some of your ideas to add variety to my lunch sandwiches? Different ideas for breads? ingredients? types of mustard? combinations of ingredients?

I already enjoy turkey w/ swiss, cheese, cranberry & stuffing ... another favorite is a good slice of baquette, w/ artichoke hearts, brie cheese, and toasted almonds, broiled til warm and gooey.
Wow, some great recipes so far! Things that have caught my eye are the olive spread and grilled vegies; the tofu; the Sharon sandwich; Calif chicken; tom, basil, mozzerella; and chicken w/ basil, etc.

I do enjoy PB& banana, I'll have to try w/ strawberry slices :-)

Tuna w/ BBQ sauce? what kind of bbq sauce?

Keep the ideas/recipes coming, and thanks!

Answer
grilled chicken breast
pesto sauce mixed with mayo
roasted red peppers
red onion, thinly sliced
provolone cheese
on herbed foccacia or ciabatta bread, or even in a pita

Then, if you have a grill (better yet, a panini grill), grill the completed sandwich until the cheese starts to melt and the bread gets crusty.

I think I have to get out of the food section. LoL. Drool =P
