My husband and I are overweight, we want to learn to eat healthy first before we count calories or any of that. I heard things that are all natural are the best. Nothing in a box or can. That type of thing and I know drinking lots of water is good. Exercise, I know but Im concerned with different types of healthy foods and herbs. Natural stuff. Any suggestions or comments?Any advice would b great. Thanks

Answer
(End of my answer...)

Herbs are anything you like. I usually plan recipes before going shopping to get all the ingredients and add herbs and spices to my pantry according to the recipes. The 20 I used the most are basil, bay leaf, chervil, chili powder, chives, cilantro, dill, garlic powder, marjoram, nutmeg, onion powder, oregano, paprika, parsley, rosemary, sage, savory, tarragon, thyme and turmeric.
I use fresh garlic and onions but in some cases, you need the powder. And I also use ginger if I have nausea (one tsp in water will do wonders to settle a stomach). I bought turmeric after reading an article about all its benefits. Plus it’s a cousin of ginger, which I do not use for cooking (just for medicinal purposes) and it is not as gingery as ginger but smells/tastes great and goes well with chicken, rice, beans and lentils.

Keep your empty bottles of herbs, so you can reuse them for your favorite recipes. Fill the bottle ¾ with your favorite mixture (to have room to shake it up before use) so you don’t have to constantly measure one tsp of this and one tsp of that and ¼ of tsp of some other thing. For example, when I do my skinless legs and/or thighs rotisserie chicken (I only like the dark meat) I mix salt, paprika, chili powder, garlic powder, black pepper, onion powder and thyme in my empty container and that will last me half a dozen rotisserie chicken recipes. Then I wash my chicken parts, dry them, cover them with my herbs mixture and 45 minutes later, I have the best chicken ever...free range, organically fed, low fat as it is skinless and cooked without added fats and you get all the flavors of the herbs and spices since you don’t have to discard the skin as there is no skin.
Then you can prepare ¼ inch sliced red potatoes with basil, oregano, thyme, onion powder, garlic, salt, pepper and olive oil. You toss to coat and grill for 9 minutes (I use a Foreman G5 that grills both sides at the same time), when your chicken if 10 minutes away from being cooked.

About that other answer you got...

White bread is good when you want something light and unfulfilling before a meal (like amuse-gueules).

Negative calorie food is a stupid idea as if you eat a 75 calories egg then you would need 100 calories to digest it...IF you only eat that. Who only eats one egg? It would be like washing a single t-shirt in a washing machine...lots of wasted energy for little output. Add the t-shirt to a load of wash and you won’t use more water or energy. You’d be better off exercising for 3 minutes than trying to lose 25 calories by eating an egg and nothing else.

Cabbage is good as any veggies from the cabbage family like Brussels sprouts, broccoli, Chinese broccoli (kay-lan), Chinese cabbage (bok choy), cress, cauliflower, turnips, kale, collard greens, mustard , canola (rapeseed), radish, horseradish, rutabaga, and hybrids like broccoflower (broccoli/cauliflower...green cauliflower and also Romanesco broccoli) or broccolini (broccoli/kay-lan) and 15 others...
BUT they’re powerful diuretics like alcohol, tea (anything with caffeine like coffee or sodas), cranberry juice, and food like cucumbers, watermelons, fresh tomatoes, asparagus, artichokes, beets, carrots, lettuce, raw onions, oats, melon, celery and parsley.
I eat diuretics with salty food as to not have to fight dehydration by having to drink too much water and also be bothered by having to pee a lot. You’re not peeing more because you drink but because of the effect of the diuretics and drinking more water just helps you not dehydrate.
This is why some recipes have ingredients that complete one another, like the “corned beef and cabbage” recipe I’ll cook for St. Patrick’s Day or sauerkraut/sausage combination, cauliflower/ham casserole, adding ham/bacon to your lettuce, tomato, onion sandwich, crunchy celery in your tuna salad, salty vinaigrette with artichokes or asparagus. If you eat a fresh tomato like an apple, biting into it (a tasty organic one), it will taste better with some salt, same with radishes, as your body knows that those are powerful diuretics. I only eat peeled cucumbers that is thinly sliced and degorged in salt to get rid of the indigestible cucumber water, then I make a vinaigrette (without the salt as it’s salty enough since I disgorged it in salt).
People losing weight drinking/eating diuretics are losing water weight and dehydrating. If you can maintain your weight while eating cabbage, then you’re in trouble, because you’re dehydrating, so you should lose weight on a scale, not maintain it.

Have a piece of chocolate once in a while...the polyphenols in chocolate inhibit oxidation of LDL cholesterol plus it tastes yummy and makes you feel good. Do not deprive yourself of any food or it would become an obsession. Be in tune with your body and follow your food cravings. Chocolate cravings are usually a need to feel better (chocolate is an antidepressant).

I just started year 13, so now have access to the common room. This means we can use the jug, microwave, toastie machine, electric frying pan whenever we want. I just want some lunch ideas or recipes that are healthy and easy to make and some that will warm me up in the winter. So if you have any, please share.

Answer
