I'm trying to lose weight and I recently found out that whole wheat is better then the normal tasty bread for you.

What are some ways I can make whole wheat bread taste better? What kind of recipes do you got?

Answer
Whole wheat is great and actually adds flavor too!! Use it for whatever sandwiches you enjoy!

If you like peanut butter and jelly (and really who doesn't?) you can make it so much healthier. You can actually make it into a complete healthy meal, rather than a high processed sugar bomb with no nutritive value. Try a natural peanut butter (less sugar, no preservatives), whole wheat bread, and a sugar free all fruit spread (like Polaner's). It will offer you a balanced meal of proteins, fats, and carbs. Not to mention high fiber, low or natural sugars, and nutrient dense calories. This means you get a full belly and steady energy for hours.

A bit more of a grown up taste but not bad by any means!

What are some tasty but healthy recipes i can make?

Answer
Healthy Sandwich Bites

Use an assortment of cookie cutters (or just cut the bread into 4's), white and wheat bread, and the two types of sandwich spreads below to make a plate of healthy sandwich bites.

Roasted Chicken Spread:
Ingredients:
2 roasted chicken breasts, skinless and boneless, cut into small pieces
3 tablespoons light mayonnaise
1/4 cup light cream cheese (fat-free cream cheese can be substituted)

Cheddar Cheese Spread:
Ingredients:
8 ounces reduced-fat sharp cheddar cheese, shredded or grated
8 ounces light or nonfat cream cheese
9 slices special recipe white or whole wheat or cracked wheat bread

Prep:
1. Decide which spread you would like to make. Cut the bread slices into interesting shapes using cookie cutters. Press cookie cutter onto 1 slice of bread at a time. If bread doesn't cut all the way, use a plastic knife to cut around the cookie cutter. Make sure you make two of every shape (to make a sandwich).
2. For chicken spread, add the chicken pieces, mayonnaise, and cream cheese to a food processor. Pulse the food processor until ingredients are blended well and are spreadable.
3. For cheese spread, add grated cheese and cream cheese to food processor. Pulse the food processor until ingredients are blended well and are spreadable.
4. Spread some of the chicken or cheddar cheese spread on one of the bread shapes. Cover with the second piece of bread in the same shape. Repeat with other bread shapes.

One spread recipe makes about 12 mini sandwiches.

Can you use wax paper instead of parchment?

Frankie

There's a few yummy sounding healthy recipes I want to try. They call for wrapping things in parchment paper. I live in Alaska so that is very expensive. Can I use old-fashioned wax paper instead? What's the difference in cooking with parchment instead of wax paper?

Answer
You can't use wax paper in the oven, it'll melt.

The main difference between waxed paper and parchment paper is their respective coatings. Parchment paper is coated with silicone to give it a nonstick, heat-resistant surface, whereas waxed paper is coated with a wax such as soybean or paraffin.

Waxed paper is not meant for use in the ovenâthe wax coating on it will melt if the paper is exposed to direct heatâso use it for wrapping up sandwiches or food for cold storage. Parchment paper is the best choice for cooking, as most brands can withstand temperatures up to about 420 degrees Fahrenheit (double-check your package to be safe). Parchment paper is good for lining cookie sheets to eliminate the need to grease them, and is also used to cook âen papillote,â a technique of wrapping food in a packet and baking it.

The other way the papers differ is in how theyâre processed before being coated. Pat Schweitzer, a spokesperson for Reynolds Consumer Products, says that the companyâs parchment paper is pressed into a sheet, then dipped into an acid bath, washed, and âpassed over a series of hot rotating drums that realign the fibers and give the paper its strength,â before the silicone coating is applied. Reynoldsâ waxed paper, on the other hand, undergoes a process called super calendering, which compresses the paper to give it its transparency, before it is coated in wax.

What are some healthy on-the-go lunches that I can make ahead of time?

healthy and cheap sandwich recipes image

I have class from 11:30 AM - 6:30 PM with just a few 5-15 minute breaks. I need some HEALTHY and CHEAP lunches that I can make ahead of time and eat fairly quickly. I stress healthy and cheap because I'm a college student on a very limited budget and I don't want to eat junk food every day. I'm also tired of the same old sandwich and wrap ideas because eating the same thing every day gets pretty boring.

Answer
Hi Jasmine, Wish I knew what you've been talking in your lunch or what your tastes are.

Shredded veggies with different kinds of meat and different spices with olive oil or different salad dressings are basic idea to expand on. You can add fruit into a chopped chicken salad.
In the recipe below, you don't have to use chicken breast and grill but you can use the ingredient ideas with chicken. You don't have to use all the ingredients either.

Caribbean Style Chicken Salad (You can put this in a pita, wrap or on a roll also.)
Ingredients

* 1/4 cup lime juice
* 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
* 1 clove garlic, minced
* 2 tablespoons honey
* 1/4 teaspoon salt
* 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
* 1/4 cup olive oil
* 1 pound skinless, boneless chicken breast halves
* 1 ripe mango, peeled, pitted and diced
* 1 (15.5 ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed
* 1 red bell pepper, seeded and cut into thin strips
* 1/2 jicama, sliced into matchsticks
* 1/2 head green leaf lettuce, rinsed and torn

Directions

1. Whisk together lime juice, red wine vinegar, garlic, honey, salt, and pepper until blended. Slowly whisk in olive oil until incorporated. Mix half of this dressing with the chicken breasts, cover, and refrigerate for 1 hour. Refrigerate the remaining dressing for later use.
2. Heat an outdoor grill for medium-high heat.
3. Grill chicken breasts until no longer pink, about 6 minutes per side. Set aside and allow to cool while proceeding with recipe. Toss together mango, black beans, bell pepper, and jicama in a large bowl with reserved dressing. Slice chicken into bite-sized pieces and toss with salad.
4. To serve, line a serving bowl with the green leaf lettuce and mound the chicken salad into the middle.

Answer
try this link, most of the recipes can be eaten hot or cold
http://www.fabulousfoods.com/features/brnbag/brnbag.html
Scotch Eggs
Serve hot or cold
6 hard boiled eggs
1 lb. spicy sausage meat
1/2 tsp. dried thyme
1/2 tsp. dried basil
1/2 C flour, divided
1 C breadcrumbs
1 tsp. salt
2 tsp. pepper
1 tsp. paprika
2 eggs, beaten

oil for frying
Makes 6 Eggs

Peel the eggs and set aside. Mix sausage and spices in a small bowl. Divide sausage into 6 equal portions, set aside. Mix breadcrumbs with salt, pepper and paprika, set aside.

Dry each egg with a paper towel, then roll lightly in flour to coat. Take one portion of sausage and using hands, shape a coating around the hard boiled egg, completely enclosing it (see photos). Roll in flour again, then dip in beaten egg then roll in breadcrumb mixture. Repeat with remaining eggs.

Heat about 2-3 inches of oil in a large skillet. Fry eggs, turning frequently, until golden brown on all sides. Drain on paper towels. Let cool slightly before serving. To serve, cut each in half and serve with some good mustard.

Veggie Tortilla Wraps
1 (9") flour tortilla
2 thin slices cheese (Monterey Jack or Swiss is good)
1/2 avocado, sliced thinly
1/3 C leftover grilled vegetables (like zucchini, mushrooms, onions, peppers, etc.)
1 large lettuce leaf
2 T balsamic vinaigrette dressing

Serves 1 (multiply by the number you are making)

Place lettuce leaf across the middle of the tortilla. Top with cheese, avocado and grilled vegetables. Sprinkle with dressing. Fold egg-roll style, tucking in sides as you roll.

Cilantro Tomato Pasta Salad
1 cucumber
1 C ripe red tomatoes, diced
1/2 C red onion, finely chopped
2 T fresh lime juice
1 T cilantro, chopped
1 tsp. granulated sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. black pepper
1 C dry small shell pasta, cooked and drained
Serves 4

Peel the cucumber and cut in half lengthwise. Use a spoon to gently scrape away the seeds. Cut in half again lengthwise and dice the cucumber. Place cucumber, tomato, red onion, lime juice, cilantro, sugar, salt and pepper in a bowl with pasta. Toss gently. Transfer to a serving bowl; chill at least 15 minutes before serving.

What is a good diet for someone trying to stay healthy?

Vickey

I want to go on a diet to be healthy, but I don't want it to have to be too hard. I work out a lot, and am very fit, but I feel that I am not making the healthiest choices when it comes to eating. What should I do when it comes to disciplining my food choices?

Answer
Thats great that your active and want to eat healthy :)
Go for natural, organic foods. Eat smaller portions more often rather than big portions less often. Avoid things like soda, diet soda or any diet drinks, artificial colors or sweeteners, too much sugar, overly processed foods. Remember to drink plenty of water. Green tea is great to =) As well as water with lemon which is cleansing, good for your skin, digestive system.

You can also try out healthier alternatives with food.
Examples:

- Replace fast food french fries with homemade sweet potato or regular fries (made with a touch of olive oil, salt)

- For chips, you could try natural sweet potato chips, pita chips, fat free popcorn, pop chips or a natural potato chip brand like Kettle. You can also make your own chips by thinly slicing potatoes or sweet potatoes, glazing with olive oil, sprinkling with salt (pepper, basil if you'd like - cinnamon goes well with sweet potatoes) & baking them.

- Replace candy with things like frozen grapes or banana slices, dried mango strips, dried blueberries/cranberries/cherries/papaya, raisins, etc.

- Try a veggie burger on a whole wheat bun, topped with some things you like.

- If you want soda, try cold sparkling water with lemon or mixed with 100 % organic fruit juice instead

- Replace white pasta with whole grain in pasta dishes + add veggies (for example adding baby spinach to pasta, grilled vegetables to lasagna, broccoli/grated carrot/spinach/kale to pasta salad, etc.

- For a creamy pasta sauce try tomato sauce with goat cheese mixed in, for a healthier dish

- Enjoy pizza, try it on thin multigrain crust topped with fresh veggies.

- For healthier treat options try things like: frozen yogurt, vanilla greek yogurt with berries & grated dark chocolate, whole grain baked goods, etc. Desserts are fine in moderation :)

Here is a list with some healthy food ideas :)

~ Greek yogurt or yogurt (nonfat) - Greek yogurt has more protein than regular yogurt
~ Eggs, cheese, cottage cheese (2% is fine), goat cheese, skim milk or goat milk, etc.

~ Whole grain breads: multigrain bread, ezekiel bread, rye bread, whole wheat pitas, whole grain tortillas or bagels, etc.
~ Whole grain pasta or brown rice pasta, brown/wild rice, quinoa, buckwheat, etc.

Witty rema

What are some healthy, easy meals\snacks for breakfast, lunch and dinner that I can make at home?
10 points for the most ideas for all the meals\snacks!

Answer
Breakfast:

- Egg whites (better for you than the whole egg) with a little salt and pepper, maybe some cheese to add flavor, on wheat toast.
- Grapefruit (it's sooo healthy for you, it can be a snack too)
- Cottage Cheese Pancakes: http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/recipes/351
- Oatmeal
- All fruit smoothie. Have non frozen fruit and add ice or use frozen fruit and add a little 100% fruit juice. You can make it a *healthy* milk shake by using low fat milk instead of juice and adding a little sugar (sugar isn't unhealthy in small amounts, but fake sugar like sweet and low and equal are bad for you)

Lunch/Dinner:

- Chicken breast with lemon pepper or other seasonings
- A spinach tortilla with chicken cooked in some bbq sauce. Add lots of lettuce and a little bit of light ranch (like a teaspoon, if even that).
- Salad- there are thousands of possible salads you can make but what I love doing is a bunch of lettuce, some spinach if you like that, salt, pepper, garlic (powder and only a small amount) and vegetables like tomatoes, cucumbers, or even carrots and peppers
- Taco Salad: brown some lean beef, drain any fat, add seasonings (McCormick has a taco seasoning packet for 50 cents). Make a bowl full of lettuce, tomatoes if you want, some beef, some cheese if you want, and tortilla chips if you want (less healthy version).
- Chicken in a bag- McCormick's has these awesome chicken bag seasonings where you throw chicken in the bag (they provide) with some carrots, potatoes, whatever you want, add the seasoning and bake for about an hour. One of my husbands favorites!
- Costco sells individual salmon fillets. Take one out of the fridge/freezer, season to your liking, throw on a pan, the grill, or in the oven and cook.
- a sandwich- between whole wheat bread slices, pita style, or wrapped up (spinach wraps are really delicious, or whole wheat wraps which I'm not a huge fan of).
- Make some quinoa or brown rice in a rice cooker or in a pot if you don't have one. Add some black beans, salt and pepper, and some mozzarella if it's still to bland. I like to add some sriracha (chili hot sauce) into the rice as it cooks and some garlic seasoning. It adds some kick and makes it taste really good without adding the sodium from cheese.

Snacks:
- peppers
- celery. If you hate it alone add some organic peanut butter (no preservatives) you can even go to many stores and grind your own peanuts into peanut butter.
- peas, green beans, cucumbers, tomatoes, other vegetables but not potatoes or corn.
- apples, pears, bananas, berries, grapefruit, and other fruits.
- some nuts or a homemade trail mix (raisins, peanuts, almonds, some dark chocolate chips, whatever else you want)

Dessert
- a small amount of dark chocolate is actually really good for you. The higher the cocoa content the better :) But only a small amount.

Those are my favorites but check out this site: http://www.lifehack.org/articles/lifehack/over-100-quick-and-easy-healthy-foods.html

for more options. There are an unlimited amount of healthy foods out there you just have to find what you like and stick with it :)

Is Kelp powder used in Vegan recipes for nutritional reasons or taste?

healthy tuna salad sandwich recipe no mayo

healthy tuna salad sandwich recipe no mayo image
Q. I came across a Vegan Mock Tuna Salad recipe and it contains Kelp Powder. Kelp Powder is very difficult to find. I was wondering if it is necessary in the recipe to make it taste right or if it is used for nutritional purposes only. BTW, does anyone know where to purchase Kelp Powder because I usually find anything and everything at Whole Foods Market but not Kelp Powder.

Answer
For faux tuna salad, it's there for taste. It gives it that fishy flavor. Of course, it's healthy too. But, if you made faux tuna salad without it, you'd basically have tofu & Vegenaise, maybe some kind of onion or something, and it wouldn't be like tuna salad at all. I buy kelp powder from my local health food store. They have all sorts of herbs, spices, & seasonings available in their bulk section. (I wouldn't set foot inside a Whole Foods store anyway.) Maybe if you can't find it, you could buy some nori (sushi wraps) & crumble them up into tiny bits & use that instead. It'll give pretty much the same fishy flavor, it just won't be a fine powder. You should be able to find nori at any decent grocery store. You could also just make faux egg salad instead. Oh, or this is really good as a sandwich filling:

Chickpea Salad

* 1 15-oz can chickpeas
* 2 tbsp vegan mayo
* 1 tbsp mustard (I use horseradish mustard)
* 2 stalks celery, diced
* 1/2 cup diced green pepper
* 1/2 cup diced onion (I use chives or green onions. I think raw yellow/red onion is too strong.)
* 1/4 tsp lemon juice
* a squirt or two of Bragg's or soy sauce
* pepper to taste (if you think it needs it...you won't need salt because of the Bragg's)

Put the (drained & rinsed) chickpeas in a large bowl. Mash with a masher or fork. Don't use a blender. You want them to be slightly chunky still. Add all the other ingredients & mix well. Add more mayo & mustard if it seems a little dry. (The measurements above are from the original recipe, but I've always used more.) It's great stuffed in a pita with some lettuce or cucumber and grated carrots.

What are some good sandwich recipes that you guys make?

Answer
Turkey Club Sandwich
Serve this double-decker sandwich with carrot and celery sticks and red and green grapes. If you don't like Swiss cheese, substitute any other variety, such as cheddar cheese.
4 tablespoons fat free mayonnaise
4 teaspoons fresh basil, chopped
12 slices sourdough bread, toasted
8 ounces turkey breast lunch meat
6 slices bacon, fried crisp
4 romaine lettuce leaves
8 slices tomato
4 slices Swiss cheese
In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise and basil. Spread 1 teaspoon of mixture on each slice of bread.

Place 1 slice of bread on plate. Top with 1 ounce turkey and 1 1/2 pieces of bacon. Add another lsice of bread, 1 ounce turkey, 1 lettuce leaf, 2 slices tomato and 1 piece of cheese. Top with last slice of bread. Place a toothpick in each half of sandwich and cut down the center. Serve immediately

Tuna Salad Sandwiches
For variety, add cucumber or tomato slices to each sandwich.
2 cans albacore tuna, in water, drained
½ cup celery, diced
½ cup apple, diced
1 teaspoon lemon juice
â cup fat free mayonnaise
4 lettuce leaves
8 slices whole wheat bread
In a small bowl, flake tuna with fork. Add celery, apple, lemon juice and mayonnaise. Stir well.

To serve, place 1 leaf of lettuce on a slice of bread. Top with 1/4 of tuna mixture, spread to edges and top with another slice of bread. Serve immediately.

Philly Steak Sandwich
Cheddar cheese is high in fat and calories, so limit the cheese to 2 tablespoons for each sandwich. For variety, use roast beef that has been rubbed with Italian seasonings.
1 bell pepper, thinly sliced
1 onion, thinly sliced
12 ounces lean roast beef, shaved thin
4 whole wheat buns
½ cup Cheddar cheese, shredded
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Coat a baking pan with cooking spray.

Spray frying pan with cooking spray. Over medium heat, saute the peppers and onions until they soften, about 3 - 5 minutes. Add the roast beef and saute for an additional 2 -3 minutes.

Place 1/4 of the roast beef mixture on each bun and place on baking pan. Top each with 2 tablespoons of cheese. Bake until cheese has melted, about 2 - 4 minutes. Serve immediately.

Mexican Roll Ups
A tasty alternative to sandwiches for a lunchbox or picnic. Roast beef, chopped tomatoes, bell pepper and seasonings are rolled in whole wheat tortillas and wrapped in tin foil. Easy to transport and neat to eat.
6 whole wheat tortillas
6 leaves romaine lettuce
1 ¼ pounds sliced roast beef
1 cup chopped tomatoes
1 cup chopped red bell pepper
2 tablespoons olive oil
3 tablespoons red wine vinegar
½ teaspoon ground cumin
For each roll up, tear off about a 15 inch piece of wax paper or aluminum foil. Place the tortilla on the paper or foil. Top with lettuce leaf, about 3 ounces of beef, divide tomatoes pepper, oil, vinegar and cumin evenly over all tortillas.

Begin rolling the paper or foil over the tortilla to encase the filling. Roll until the sandwich is completely rolled.

To eat, peel back the paper or foil

Ham and Egg Salad
1 ½ cups fully cooked ham, cubed
6 egg, hard boiled, chopped
½ cup celery, chopped
½ cup sweet pickle relish
½ cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons honey mustard
Combine first 4 ingredients. Blend together mayo and mustard, add to ham mixture and toss lightly. Chill well before serving

Chicken Tostadas
Chicken breasts make a fine change of pace for tostada filling, along with tomatoes, lettuce and bell pepper. A garnish of salsa with fat free sour cream and grated cheese keep this dish a healthy one.
1 ½ pounds chicken breasts, cooked
3 cups romaine lettuce, torn into bite size pieces
½ cup bell pepper, chopped
½ cup chopped tomatoes
6 flour tortillas
6 tablespoons fat free sour cream
6 tablespoons salsa
6 tablespoons Cheddar cheese, grated
Heat tortillas by placing them in a large dry skillet over medium high heat, turn one until golden and puffy.

Place tortillas on plates, evenly distribute remaining ingredients over tops of toasted tortillas. Serve immediately.

Chicken Salad
3 - 4 cup cooked chicken, diced
1 cup celery, chopped fine
1 cup apple, peeled, cored and chopped fine
1 teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon pepper
â teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon dried parsley
â teaspoon dill weed
½ cup mayonnaise
¼ cup sour cream
Combine all ingredients. Chill overnight before serving.

What is an extrememly fast way to lose weight?

healthy sandwich recipes under 300 calories image

shy_eyes_w

I'm 13 and I already keep a food journal, count calories (trying to stay between 1,000 and 1,500) and work out...a lot. I still need to know some exercises and foods that help you burn fat, though. I am basically living off of smoothies, salads, and sometimes a treat like an eggroll or something but basically mostly salads and smoothies. I'm starting to get tired of them so if anyone has any recipes (that dont include seafood) that are only 300 calories or under will you please post them? Also if anyone can tell me how to lose more weight faster or something I'm doing wrong..please help. Thanx in advance!

Answer
I would stop doing the smoothies as there are lots of calories in them; I know because my husband & I tried them for over six months and we did not lose very much weight. And we were still hungry afterwards. What really helped us was Weight Watchers and eating a variety of foods and of course exercise. You need to do aerobic exercise. Your body also needs to have energy (calories) to lose weight and I think you are actually giving yourself too few calories. I would try to up the calorie count a little bit, say to 2000.

Drink your milk with 1 or 2% fat, eat apples and berries (lots of fiber) have some lean meat (like broiled chicken or pork loin), eat oatmeal (not the little packs but the real stuff) for breakfast (my husband swears by it-and he lost lots of weight by having breakfast) have sandwiches with low cal bread and low fat meat or cheese with mustard for lunch and have veggies like brocolli and carrots (broiled or steamed) with your meat for dinner. Do not eat fried foods at all as they will set you back a bit. And lastly, drink your water - you do not talk about that at all and that is probably the most important thing about nutrition and being healthy. It will also keep you feeling fullish. One last thing, I would strongly recommend going to a doctor and a nutritionist to make sure about what you are doing and before you start to do any of these things recommended by anyone on this topic.

What food can you order at restaurants or fast food places that is low fat/calories?

Power

I am a diabetic on pills but I just need a diet that any healthy person would eat with low sugar.
8am- low carb yogurt, banana, cherrios & cinomin in it.
10am a couple cups of popcorn or a 1/2 an apple with peanut butter
noon-salad bar kind of salad or a healthy soup with whole grain crackers & meditaraniun I can't believe it's not butter
or a tuna sandwich with some broccoli & dip
3pm same snack as the one at 10am but the opposite one than the one I picked earlier
5pm a proten such as fish or chicken, 1 whole grain peice of break with butter, veggie & a sweet or baked potato
8 pm a yogurt to keep my sugar steady through the night & I believe the calcium is relaxing & it keeps me from getting hungry
Thanks any ideas or suggestion or comments are welcome

Answer
No, most of the things you've listed are not good for diabetics because they quickly turn into sugar.
Yogurt, bananas, & cheerios all quickly turn to sugar (even if it says sugar free).
Crackers, even whole wheat are high in carbs, dips & baked potatoes are even worse, so is corn (yes popped as well).

The best diet I found that is both healthy & balanced is the South Beach Diet. They give you easy recipes to follow. You can pick up the book at the library or buy it for a reasonable price at Amazon.com
I had such good success with it that the last time I went to the doctor, he told me: "whatever you're doing, keep it up." It lowered not only my sugar count, but my cholesterol & triglycerides as well.

HELP! How do I go about reaching my goal weight?

(:

I weigh about 185 and I am 5'7". 16 years old. Female. I am buying an Elliptical this Friday. If I use it for 20 minutes in the morning, and 45 minutes at night, would I reach my goal of 160 by September? I am going to try to change my eating habits as well, but I am very bad at eating well. What do you think I should eat? BTW... Almost everyone in my immediate family is over-weight. My mom hates to eat healthy, and she is the one who goes grocery shopping. I practically have to beat her to buy healthy things. Lol, just kidding. But my Dad recently found out he is a diabetic, so I think it would be easier for me to get her to buy healthy things. Do you have any recipes for snacks or dinner that would work for diabetics, and for my weight loss goal? Thanks so much!

Answer
An elliptical is a great idea except people tend to do the same workouts everyday on them you should remember to always change up the time and resistance on it. if your having trouble with the diet try compound digestion it works by eating 6 small meals a day an apple here half a sandwich there try to stay away from high fat foods duh... it keeps your metabolism burning all day and helps to prevent hunger, ....... good luck!

What are some simple, yummy, healthy recipes?

dizzy r

I am looking for some easy, healthy, yummy recipes. Short preparation and cook time preferred. Please keep in mind that I'm a college student that works part time and I cannot spend tons of money either. Also, I do not eat chicken or pork. I prefer to eat seafood most of the time as it is lean and healthy. I eat beef very rarely because I prefer it over iron tablets. Thanks! :)

Answer
Stir fry - Put a bunch of vegetables in the wok with a touch of oil, serve over short grain brown rice.

Soup - Boil vegetables, throw in some noodles, drop in a raw egg or some cooked beans, how about a few shrimp.

Tortillas, beans & cheese. Slice in some tomatoe and avocado.

Sandwiches - Get nice crusty bread, good cheeses, fresh tomatoes, grilled vegetables, tuna fish. Also smoked fish on bagels.

Pilaf - Rice with herbs & seasonings, mix in toasted nuts & seeds, stir in some minced broccoli, carrot or cauliflower, cook using broth for more flavor, add fresh melon on top

What are some healthy, tasty meals for the school year?

monkisrock

Can anyone give me tasty but healthy recipes for the school year?
I don't like to eat breakfast, so if you can give me some very quick, easy to make, healthy and not too filling breakfasts, that'd be great.

And lunch I need to be able to make in about 15 minutes, be eaten in about 35ish minutes, healthy, and can fit into a lunch box.

Thanks!

-monkisrockmisox

Answer
Breakfast: Yogurt is always good. You got some calcium, some protein, and some vitamins, assuming you get some fruit flavored yogurt. If you want a little extra crunch, you can sprinkle some of your favorite cereal on top. Fresh fruit is also a wonderful way to start your day.

Lunch: Sandwiches are your bread and butter, literally! Mix it up. Turkey and tuna are both great for you, and if you put some healthy green lettuce (none of that iceberg stuff) and a tomato you will round things out. Go easy on the mayo, if you even want any. On other days you can mix it up with peanut butter and your favorite jelly. For some healthy, quick side snacks, I'd recommend a combination of string cheese, carrot sticks, and grapes. These don't take any prep time, and all have their own benefits. To drink, well, I think that's up to you. Bottled water is the simplest.

Just browsing for some yummy chicken salad recipes. Good enough to go on a croissant with some romaine lettuce thanks!:)

Answer
Chicken Salad http://video.about.com/southernfood/How-to-Make-Chicken-Salad-With-Apples-and-Cranberries.htm
If you're looking for a light and healthy dish that's packed with flavor, you can't go wrong with this recipe, so grab the following ingredients and let's get started:
Ingredients
3 cups of diced, cooked chicken
¼ cup of dried cranberries
½ cup of diced celery
3 tablespoons of finely chopped red onion
½ cup of diced apple
¼ cup of chopped walnuts
4 to 6 tablespoons of mayonnaise
2 teaspoons of lemon juice
1/8 teaspoon of curry powder
¼ teaspoon of salt
1/8 teaspoon of black pepper
Romaine lettuce leaves or croissants

Mix Ingredients for Chicken Salad
If you tend to like sweeter foods, then red delicious apples are the way to go; however, if you'd prefer your chicken salad to be a bit more tart, then green apples are just the ticket. In a large bowl, combine the chicken, cranberries, celery, onion, apple, and walnuts and give everything a good mixing. While freshly grilled chicken is ideal in this dish, you can save yourself a little time by using pre-cooked and pre-diced chicken, which is available in the refrigerated section of most supermarkets. We now want to mix together the mayonnaise, salt and pepper, lemon juice, and curry powder in a small bowl.

Mix Mayo With Chicken and Serve Chicken Salad
Once done, add the mayonnaise mixture to the large bowl containing the chicken and stir everything together. I like to serve chicken salad on croissants, but if you're trying to cut back on calories, it's also delicious served on crisp romaine leaves. Be sure to place any leftovers in the fridge in a sealed tupperware container. Chicken salad with apples and cranberries is a quick and easy recipe that's great for an impromptu lunch on the patio, or a light and low-calorie dinner for the family. You really can't go wrong with a dish that's simple, healthy, and loaded with flavor.

Chicken Salad Sandwich http://www.healthguidance.org/entry/11686/1/Easy-Picnic-Recipes.html

For this recipe youâll need:
Chicken breasts boneless and skinless (stewed, diced in small pieces): 3 pieces
Mayonnaise: 1/3 cup
Sour cream (fat free): ½ cup
Lemon juice (freshly-squeezed): 1-2 tablespoons
Green or red grapes (seedless cut in half): 2 cups
Salt: ½ tsp.
Pepper: ½ tsp.
Dried parsley: ½ tsp.
Poppy seeds (optional): 1 tsp.
Pecans or walnuts, chopped: 1 cup
Buttery croissant rolls: large
Romaine lettuce: cut to fit the croissants

Preparation:
To make this recipe mix the sour cream, mayonnaise and the lemon juice in a large bowl. In this mix, add the diced chicken pieces and the pecans, mix the ingredients well. Next, add the parsley and grapes and the poppy seeds and stir them well. Refrigerate this mixture for 1-2 hours. Take croissants, and if they are not already cut into half, then cut them from the middle. Place the lettuce leaves on the cut croissants and some of the chicken salad mix on the lettuce leaves. Cover with the other side of the croissant and pack them to carry for your expedition.

When you are leaving for a picnic, do not forget to carry some drinks. If it is a summer picnic, make sure that you have plenty of juice bottles packed while leaving. You can also make some Mocktails to go along with your easy picnic recipes. Plan well before you go so that you have enough time to get things ready for the picnic.

Where can I find a "cute blanket and cute basket" also what kind of snacks are good on a picnic?

T-BOX

I'm planing on taking my girl on a picnic my cousin told me I need a cute blanket and basket but I don't know where I can find either also what kind of snacks are good she doesn't like veggies or fruits or fruit flavored things except for cherry flavor and pineapple flavor

Answer
Try to check out the yogurt as there are many flavors and it will stay cool for a while. These two baskets are reasonable in price. In personally like the first one but I did see more and the price range I saw was from $22.00 to $711.00. The blankets are cute but the cutest ones I saw were $60.00. I did not go further into the basket and blanket as your cousin might have purchased them at some time and maybe you can borrow them. The thing I thought you would be most interested in would be the foods to take along. There is quite a list of them.

Answer
Chicken or Turkey Salad Sandwich

2 skinless, boneless chicken or turkey breast
4 eggs
1 red apple, diced (optional)
3 green onions, chopped
1/3 cup relish
1/2 cup mayonnaise
2 stalks celery, thinly sliced
1 (8 ounce) can pineapple chunks, juice reserved
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
Salt and pepper

Directions:

1.Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add chicken or turkey and cook until thoroughly cooked and no longer pink inside, approximately 20 minutes. Drain, cool and chop.

2.Meanwhile, place eggs in a saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring water to a boil and immediately remove from heat. Cover and let eggs stand in hot water for 10 to 12 minutes. Remove from hot water, rinse with cold water, 2 minutes, peel and slice.

3.In a large bowl, mix together the chicken, sliced eggs, apple, onions, relish, mayonnaise, celery, pineapple (with just a little juice for flavor), cilantro, seasoning to taste.

Serve on bread, buns, pitas or wraps with shredded lettuce, sliced tomato and any other fresh sliced veggies.

******************

Turkey Omelette

4 eggs
1 green onion, sliced
2 tablespoons minced fresh parsley
1/4 teaspoon dried tarragon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 tablespoon butter or margarine
1/2 cup cooked turkey meat, shredded
1/2 cup seeded diced tomato ( you can add sauteed onion, peppers, mushrooms, steamed broccoli)
1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Directions:

In a bowl, beat eggs, onion, parsley, tarragon, salt and pepper. Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat; add egg mixture. As eggs set, lift edges, letting uncooked portion flow underneath. Sprinkle with turkey, tomatoes and cheese. When the eggs are set, remove from the heat; fold omelet in half.

This would also work with the sausage instead of the turkey, just brown then add to the omelette.

*********************

Deviled Eggs

6 eggs
1/2 teaspoon paprika
2 tablespoons mayonnaise
1/2 teaspoon mustard powder
Salt and pepper

Directions:

1.Place eggs in a pot of salted water. Bring the water to a boil, and let eggs cook in boiling water until they are hard boiled, approximately 10 to 15 minutes. Drain eggs, and let cool.

2.Cut eggs in half, lengthwise. Remove the egg yolks and mash them together in a small mixing bowl. Mix in the paprika, mayonnaise, dry mustard, salt ans pepper. Spoon mixture into the egg shells, chill for 1 hour and serve.

(You can add cooked, chopped bacon and shredded cheddar cheese to the egg yolk mixture if desired.)

*******************

Breakfast Buns

4 sausages, cooked and sliced
1 tablespoon butter or margernie
4 eggs
2 green onions, sliced
1/3 cup milk
salt, pepper
cheddar cheese
2-4 slices tomato

Directions:

1. Heat butter in skillet. Whisk eggs and green onions with milk, season with salt and pepper.
2. Scramble fry eggs, when almost doen add cooked, sliced sausage, top with cheese. Remove from heat, cover 2 minutes, or until cheese melts.
3. Toast buns, (if desired) add sliced tomato, top with egg/sausage mixture, top with top bun.
Also works with cooked, crumbled bacon.

***************

Fried Egg Sandwich - serves 4

Ingredients:

2 teaspoons butter
4 eggs
4 slices processed American cheese
8 slices toasted white bread
salt and pepper to taste
2- 4 tablespoons ketchup

Directions:

1.In a large skillet, melt butter over medium high heat. Crack eggs in pan and cook to desired firmness. Just before eggs are cooked, place a slice of cheese over each egg.

2.After cheese has melted, place each egg on a toasted slice of bread. Season eggs with salt and pepper. Spread ketchup on remaining slices of bread and cover eggs with bread to make 4 sandwiches. Serve warm.
(Can add slices of cooked bacon or ham)

KRIS

I'm going into 7th grade and my parents want to cut back on spending money, so I have to pack lunch occasionally. I want to know what yummy lunches I can make at home. Ideas?
Thanks!
I need some recipes guys!

Answer
Depends on your taste of course, but you could try the following:

- Pasta salad - easily made the night before, put over a dash of olive oil, cover in clingfilm and leave in fridge until you're ready to take

- Crackers

- For a change on sandwiches, try wraps, baguettes and bagels (you could try mozarella, tomato and rocket; chicken and bacon; prawn and avocado; egg and cress; bacon, lettuce and tomato; chicken and sweetcorn; fajitas with chicken or beef, peppers and onions). To save time, you could buy the ready-made sandwich fillers but healthier to make your own up

- Fruit salad - cut up a mixture of strawberries, pineapple, kiwis, oranges, apples, etc. Bananas are also good for energy

Will I definetely lose weight by doing this? And how to start becoming vegan?

Krystiee J

Eating 5-6 small meals a day!:) I heard its actually pretty healthy for you! and that's what Ariana Grande did to lose alot of weight if you've noticed. If you've looked at her current pictures, and she's the red headed girl on Nickelodeon's hit TV show VicTORIous. Here's my plan.(Times)

Breakfast:7 AM
Mid Morning Snack: 10 PM
Lunch: 1 PM
Afternoon Snack: 4 PM
Dinner: 7 PM
:)
Alright. This also contains eating plenty of fruits and veggies and all that healthy stuff. I was also thinking about becoming a Vegan? But Idk where to start? Any ideas? I know to cut out meat but what specifically should I be eating? Thanks for your answers guys.

Answer
Now I do not know much about how the dieting vegan works, but you are leaning to the vegetarian side with the no meat process. I know some recipes for vegetarians and some do not cut out meat by replacing it with fake veggie meat.

Breakfast: Special K Parfait 160 calories
â¢1 container (8 oz.) low-fat vanilla flavored yogurtâ¢Â½ cup fresh fruit (sliced strawberries, sliced banana, blueberries or raspberries)â¢1 cup Special K® Original cereal Directions:1.In 2 tall glasses, layer yogurt, fruit and cereal until glass is full. 2.Top with extra fruit. 3.Serve immediately.

Lunch:Veggie-Bacon Avocado Sandwich 360 Calories
â¢3 Morningstar Farms® Veggie Bacon Stripsâ¢1/2 medium ripe avocado, seeded, peeled and mashed (about 1/4 cup)â¢1 teaspoon lemon juiceâ¢1/8 teaspoon saltâ¢3 to 4 drops liquid pepper sauceâ¢2 slices whole grain bread, toastedâ¢1 lettuce leafâ¢4 thick slices plum tomato or 2 thick slices tomato Directions:1.Cook Morningstar Farms® Veggie Bacon Strips according to package directions. 2.Meanwhile, in small bowl stir together avocado, lemon juice, salt and pepper sauce. Spread on one side of each toast slice. Place lettuce leaf, tomato slices and bacon strips on top of one slice. Top with remaining toast slice, avocado mixture side down. Cut in half. Serve immediately.

Dinner:Southwest Vegetarian Chili 250 calories
â¢1/4 cup chopped onionâ¢1 clove garlic, mincedâ¢1/2 to 1 teaspoon chili powderâ¢1 can (10 oz.) diced tomatoes and mild green chiliesâ¢1/2 cup kidney beans, rinsed and drainedâ¢1/4 cup no-salt-added tomato sauceâ¢1 tablespoon shredded reduced-fat cheddar cheese (optional)â¢1 tablespoon fat-free sour creamâ¢1 tablespoon sliced green onions Directions:1.In medium saucepan coated with cooking spray cook and stir onion and garlic over medium heat about 3 minutes or until tender.2.Stir in chili powder. Cook and stir for 30 seconds. Add undrained tomatoes, beans and tomato sauce. Bring to boiling. Reduce heat. Simmer, uncovered, for 3 to 5 minutes or until desired consistency. Ladle into bowl. Top with cheese (if desired), sour cream and onions.3.Southwestern Turkey Chili: Prepare chili as above, except cook 2 ounces extra lean ground turkey along with the onion and garlic about 3 minutes or until turkey is no longer pink. Drain off any fat. Continue with recipe as directed in step 2 above, except decrease kidney beans to 1/4 cup.
For your 2 snacks I prefer a snack bar or shakes that can help you lose weight.
Hope this helps.

Best answer will get 10 full points.

Answer
You might consider the 'wrap' instead of the traditional sandwich, or even using a pita pocket as your "bread". Here are some fillings to consider:

1. Lunch meat, preferable low fat chicken, turkey, ham or roast beef, your favorite cheese, lettuce, chopped tomato, cucumber and salad dressing.
2. Hummus, tomato, feta cheese, lettuce, kalamata olives
3. Tuna salad
4. Vege sandwich: cucumber, tomato, cheese, lettuce, sprouts
5. Peanut butter, banana and honey
6. Turkey and avocado

What are some good sandwich recipes that you guys make?

Where You

I eat sandwiches everyday now because im trying to stay healthy and i work out everyday. So i eat Steak and chicken at least 4 times a week. Currently on my sandwich i put. Mayo, Ham, Turkey, lettuce, Egg, and Cheese. And i use white bread. (cheap stuff from costco :P) Thank you for your recipes and tips on how to make a Great sandwich.

Answer
Turkey Club Sandwich
Serve this double-decker sandwich with carrot and celery sticks and red and green grapes. If you don't like Swiss cheese, substitute any other variety, such as cheddar cheese.
4 tablespoons fat free mayonnaise
4 teaspoons fresh basil, chopped
12 slices sourdough bread, toasted
8 ounces turkey breast lunch meat
6 slices bacon, fried crisp
4 romaine lettuce leaves
8 slices tomato
4 slices Swiss cheese
In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise and basil. Spread 1 teaspoon of mixture on each slice of bread.

Place 1 slice of bread on plate. Top with 1 ounce turkey and 1 1/2 pieces of bacon. Add another lsice of bread, 1 ounce turkey, 1 lettuce leaf, 2 slices tomato and 1 piece of cheese. Top with last slice of bread. Place a toothpick in each half of sandwich and cut down the center. Serve immediately

Tuna Salad Sandwiches
For variety, add cucumber or tomato slices to each sandwich.
2 cans albacore tuna, in water, drained
½ cup celery, diced
½ cup apple, diced
1 teaspoon lemon juice
â cup fat free mayonnaise
4 lettuce leaves
8 slices whole wheat bread
In a small bowl, flake tuna with fork. Add celery, apple, lemon juice and mayonnaise. Stir well.

To serve, place 1 leaf of lettuce on a slice of bread. Top with 1/4 of tuna mixture, spread to edges and top with another slice of bread. Serve immediately.

Philly Steak Sandwich
Cheddar cheese is high in fat and calories, so limit the cheese to 2 tablespoons for each sandwich. For variety, use roast beef that has been rubbed with Italian seasonings.
1 bell pepper, thinly sliced
1 onion, thinly sliced
12 ounces lean roast beef, shaved thin
4 whole wheat buns
½ cup Cheddar cheese, shredded
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Coat a baking pan with cooking spray.

Spray frying pan with cooking spray. Over medium heat, saute the peppers and onions until they soften, about 3 - 5 minutes. Add the roast beef and saute for an additional 2 -3 minutes.

Place 1/4 of the roast beef mixture on each bun and place on baking pan. Top each with 2 tablespoons of cheese. Bake until cheese has melted, about 2 - 4 minutes. Serve immediately.

Mexican Roll Ups
A tasty alternative to sandwiches for a lunchbox or picnic. Roast beef, chopped tomatoes, bell pepper and seasonings are rolled in whole wheat tortillas and wrapped in tin foil. Easy to transport and neat to eat.
6 whole wheat tortillas
6 leaves romaine lettuce
1 ¼ pounds sliced roast beef
1 cup chopped tomatoes
1 cup chopped red bell pepper
2 tablespoons olive oil
3 tablespoons red wine vinegar
½ teaspoon ground cumin
For each roll up, tear off about a 15 inch piece of wax paper or aluminum foil. Place the tortilla on the paper or foil. Top with lettuce leaf, about 3 ounces of beef, divide tomatoes pepper, oil, vinegar and cumin evenly over all tortillas.

Begin rolling the paper or foil over the tortilla to encase the filling. Roll until the sandwich is completely rolled.

To eat, peel back the paper or foil

Ham and Egg Salad
1 ½ cups fully cooked ham, cubed
6 egg, hard boiled, chopped
½ cup celery, chopped
½ cup sweet pickle relish
½ cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons honey mustard
Combine first 4 ingredients. Blend together mayo and mustard, add to ham mixture and toss lightly. Chill well before serving

Chicken Tostadas
Chicken breasts make a fine change of pace for tostada filling, along with tomatoes, lettuce and bell pepper. A garnish of salsa with fat free sour cream and grated cheese keep this dish a healthy one.
1 ½ pounds chicken breasts, cooked
3 cups romaine lettuce, torn into bite size pieces
½ cup bell pepper, chopped
½ cup chopped tomatoes
6 flour tortillas
6 tablespoons fat free sour cream
6 tablespoons salsa
6 tablespoons Cheddar cheese, grated
Heat tortillas by placing them in a large dry skillet over medium high heat, turn one until golden and puffy.

Place tortillas on plates, evenly distribute remaining ingredients over tops of toasted tortillas. Serve immediately.

Chicken Salad
3 - 4 cup cooked chicken, diced
1 cup celery, chopped fine
1 cup apple, peeled, cored and chopped fine
1 teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon pepper
â teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon dried parsley
â teaspoon dill weed
½ cup mayonnaise
¼ cup sour cream
Combine all ingredients. Chill overnight before serving.

What are some easy, healthy recipes for a teen to do?

easy and healthy sandwich recipes

MissConfus

Hiya=]
It's summer, and I am home alone for quiet some time. So I have to cook for myself.
I am kind of a health freak, I won't eat anything really unhealthy even though I might crave it (mostly sweet things like ice cream, cookies, and stuff.) But I am quiet picky.
Is there a website that has some easy healthy recipes I can make?
Or can you just list the name of the dish so I can look up the recipe?

Please and thank you=]

Answer
Summer is a good time for single raw foods that you can just eat without a lot of fussing around and without heating up the house. I always think of summer as a time for snacks which means, to me at least, just means smaller amounts of food that is easy to prepare. Still can be balanced nutrition and healthy stuff!

Go for things like grapes, bananas, apples, berries, carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes...whatever produce looks good dipped in ranch if you like. Whatever looks good and is in season. Make yourself a big old salad and toss it with some olive oil and citrus juice, salt, pepper, garlic. Don't be afraid to mix fruits and veggies together. Berries go great in a mixed green salad, and tropical fruits like pineapple, melons, and mango can be made into spicy salsas!

You can also grill up some chicken breasts, add a baked potato (or a sweet potato) from the microwave, and some of your salad. If you grill a couple chicken pieces ahead of time, you can store them a couple days, and mix them with some honey mustard and pickles for a chicken salad. Ham steak is also pretty lean and cooks up quickly and easily. Maybe you have a George Foreman grill laying around which makes things easy in the summer. You can also grill up almost any vegetable. Just slice it about half inch thick and rub a little olive oil, salt, and pepper on it. Good summer veg to grill include squashes, eggplants, onions, tomatoes, and even fruit.

Tortilla chips and pita are pretty healthy, so are triscuit crackers. You can use these to dip with or to make tiny little sandwiches with. When you read the ingredients on a package of food, the easier they are to understand, and the fewer the ingredients are in a food, the better. So...when you look at chips, the plain old tortilla chips are basically just corn, oil, and salt. That is pretty simple for a snack food, unlike a chip that has been spray painted with cheese like Doritos or Cheetos.

There is also yogurt, which is a lovely snack and can be used for smoothies. Try to keep some fruit pieces frozen up to thicken your smoothies instead of ice. Pure flavor, and an excellent use of fruits that are getting a little too soft to eat like bananas...which helps you not to waste them.

Eggs are also pretty good for you in moderation, and they are really easy to fix and super versatile.

If you like peanut butter get some of that. You can get healthier kinds with no added sugar, and you can also get a better jelly...basically a fruit spread with fiber (really yummy...just plain mashed up fruit with its pulp and seeds, it is just like jam only not much added ingredients like sugar)...and then make your PBJ with some whole grain bread.

You might enjoy growing your own herbs. Try it as a hobby and to improve your food! They are cheap to get started and then as long as you give it some water every now and then and don't over harvest them, they will continue to produce for a very long time, for FREE. You don't pick them, you trim off what you need and the plant keeps growing. Since some herbs are really expensive, this is a good way to get a delicious bargain. When the weather gets cool, bring them inside. Tomatoes and cucumbers and peppers are really easy to grow as well!

Have a great summer!
