Healthy breakfast, lunch and dinner ideas?

Theycallme

I know the basics...chicken salads and veggies. Does anyone know of any quick, delicious, filling lunch ideas? For dinners something fairly quick as well....im trying to start eating healthier and feeding my family better. Were big on pastas but I hear too much pasta is bad for you but im lost aside from chicken and rice and veggies for dinner..I can't think of anything really healthy for lunch all I can think of is salad :/ which is not my favorite. For breakfast....fruit oatmeal or eggs is really all I can think of. Any ideas will be appreciated!

Answer
Here are some healthy meal ideas :)
- if possible go for natural/organic foods

~ Oatmeal - with oatmeal, you can try different healthy toppings to make it more fun
Topping ideas: almond or peanut butter, nuts, fresh berries/fruit, dried fruit like cherries/cranberries/blueberries/raisins, cinnamon, skim milk or non-dairy milk, nonfat greek yogurt/regular yogurt, natural jam, honey, agave nectar, etc.
* Non-dairy milk like almond, soy, rice or coconut milk.

~ Healthy cereal (like Kashi or Nature's Path organic, high fiber, not too high in sugar) with skim milk or non-dairy milk or greek/regular yogurt. You can top with fresh berries/fruit.

~ Greek yogurt paired with a fruit, nuts if you'd like, and a fresh fruit salad.
Fruit salad combination ideas:
- Strawberries, kiwi
- Watermelon, grapes, strawberries
- Banana, mango, pineapple
- Watermelon, honeydew melon, pineapple
- Raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, blackberries
- Apple or pear, strawberries

~ Homemade smoothie: using fruit/berries of your choice with skim milk or non-dairy milk with nonfat yogurt, you can also add 1 - 2 tbsp ground flax seed.

Lunch & Dinner ideas:

~ Sandwich.
On whole grain bread like multigrain, ezekiel, rye, whole wheat pita, whole grain tortilla, etc.
- Pesto, tomato, baby spinach & mozzarella melt
- Falafel & hummus

Any dirt cheap healthy recipes? ?

Sapphire P

I'm broke and I'm trying to get healthy!

Answer
You are in a tight spot. I was once in your situation and I learned 2 things. The 1st is that you CAN eat healthy on a budget. 2nd is things DO get better.
Certain things like meat, dairy, and prepared food is usually more expensive. Use canned tuna, chicken, sardines, and salmon packed in water. Compare prices and labels. Cans that are in the middle shelves of the display are usually more expensive than the ones on top or boton shelves. But DO compare labels. Cheap doesn't always mean healthy. Compare the cost of fresh, canned, and frozen veggies. Eat beans, lentils, and peas, they are very cheap and very healthy. Don't be ashamed of using coupons and shopping when stores have big sales. Here are some ideas:
*tuna or salmon casserole
*chicken salad
*chicken tacos
*tuna or salmon croquettes
*pasta with tuna or sardines
*sardines in tomato sauce
*sardine sandwich
Here are some recipes. I make these all the time and just eye ball it so adjust ingredients to your taste.
***Tuna salad***
â¢1 can tuna
â¢1/4 of a small onion
â¢2 celery ribs
â¢1 cup mix of any other crunchy veggie that can be eaten raw like bell peppers, radishes, jicama, carrot, cucumber
â¢1/2 tablespoon fat free mayo
â¢1 tablespoon light vinaigrette
1. In a bowl mix mayo and vinaigrette until well combined.
2. Chop onion, celery, and veggies. Put in bowl. Mix with dressing.
3. Add tuna and toss.

***Pasta Primavera***
â¢1 small package
â¢1 cup frozen spinach
â¢1/2 cup frozen chopped veggie mix
â¢4 garlic cloves sliced
â¢1 jalapeño or red pepper flakes if you like spicy
â¢cheese if you have some extra cash
1. Cook pasta acording to directions. Save cooking water for veggies.
2. Cook veggies according to directions. Don't over cook, veggies should be crunch.
3. While pasta and veggies cook fry the garlic and peppers (if using) in olive oil.
4. Toss pasta, veggies, oil, and garlic 'chips'.
Add cheese if using.

***Lentil or Bean Soup***
â¢2 cups cooked lentils or beans
â¢1 cup chunky salsa
â¢4 or 5 slices bacon chopped
â¢1 can low sodium chicken broth
â¢fresh pico de gallo salsa
1. Fry bacon in large pot. Remove most of the fat.
2. Add chunky salsa and sautee briefly.
3. Add lentils or beans and broth. Bring to a boil, season with salt and pepper. Remove from heat.
4. Serve with a big spoonful of pico de gallo

***Chicken Pasta***
â¢1 can chicken
â¢1 can diced tomatoes
â¢1 package large pasta shells
â¢garlic, chopped
â¢onion, chopped
â¢Italian spices
â¢cheese
1. Cook pasta according to package
2. While pasta is cooking sautee onion and garlic.
3. Add tomatoes, spices and chicken.
4. Toss chicken with pasta and top with cheese
Hope this helps! Good luck!

Answer
Have you ever eaten negative calories foods? They are vegetables and fruits which contain so few calories that our body will need more calories to digest them than what they provide.

Some of them are:
Onions and Garlics
Cucumber
Tomato
Cabbage
Celery
Lettuce
Mandarin Oranges
Apricot
Watermelon
Melon

Try this negative calories sandwich:

Ingredients:

100 grams of cooked chicken fillet. Cut it so that it can be fitted into sandwiches.
2 slices of whole wheat bread. Slice it diagonally.
Four slices of tomatoes. Cut the tomatoes vertically, each cut is around 0.5cm in thickness
1 teaspoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice.
4 tablespoons of low fat mayonnaise
2 slices of cucumber. Peel the cucumber and remove both end. Then slice it.
1 teaspoon of chopped celery
1 teaspoon of olive oil
3 tablespoons of plain low fat yogurt
Salt, pepper and tomato ketchup to taste

Instructions:

Sprinkle the cooked chicken fillet with salt and pepper. Then mix the yogurt, mayonnaise and lemon juice in a bowl. Dip each chicken pieces into the dressing mix before putting it on the bread. Then arrange the cucumber, tomatoes and celery on the bread neatly. Last, sprinkle it with the olive oil and the remaining of the dressing.

Good ideas for healthy school lunches?

peachy app

I have things like mac n' cheese and pasta, because I'm not really a fan of sandwiches. I need ideas!

Of course I know there's fruits and vegies, and I've included those in my lists.

Any ideas? I don't need recipes, just lots and lots of options! Haha, thanks! :)

Answer
7 Ideas for Easy - and Healthy - School Lunches

1. Pack Produce
The great thing about fruits and vegetables is that they deliver a ton of nutrients and they don't require cooking. They also boost hydration and typically taste great without any added ingredients. Stick with what's in season, and you won't have to pay extra for fruit that's been flown in from Chile.

"Keep raw vegetables washed and cut in the fridge so all you have to do is pack them in the morning," suggests Christina Le Beau, blogger at Spoonfed.

Cherry tomatoes, carrot sticks, red peppers, cucumber slices, sugar snap peas, shelled edamame, berries, clementines, apples, pears, and grapes are all perfect on their own and travel well.

2. Keep it Cool, Skip the Sugar
Instead of juice boxes, include a small bottle of frozen water, suggests Kristy Bernardo of The Wicked Noodle. "The ice will keep the rest of the lunch cool, and will melt enough by lunchtime to be drinkable."

3. Think Muffins
Muffins taste great, can be eaten without utensils, and can be customized to fit in small hands (by varying the size of the muffin tin you use). "Best of all, muffins can be cooked in a big batch on Sunday afternoon, then cooled and frozen," says Charity Curley, blogger at Foodlets. When it's time to pack lunch, reach in, grab one, and put it in the lunchbox.

Here are a few easy and delicious recipes to try:

Blueberry Oatmeal Muffins and Baked Oatmeal Cups
These mildly sweet muffins - one from Two Blue Lemons, the other from Wicked Noodle - offer lasting fullness thanks to the fiber-rich oatmeal
Italian-Style Pasta and Cheese Cups and Broccoli and Cheese Pasta Cups
Two variations on a savory theme from Foodlets, and what a great theme it is: mac-n-cheese made healthy (using whole wheat pasta, eggs, and pureed beans for more protein and fiber) and they're portable.

4. Plan for Leftovers
Any dinner that doesn't require reheating or cooling can do double-duty as lunch via the miracle of leftovers. "Pack some extra dinner into lunch containers while you're doing the dishes," suggests Sarah Waldman, an integrative nutritionist and blogger at TwoBlueLemons. Cook once, feed twice - what's not to love?

Here are some lunchbox-ready dinners:

Whole Wheat Penne Pasta with Pesto & Beans
Roasted Butternut Squash Quesadillas
Chickpea Salad (sub whatever veggies your kids will eat if peppers don't fly)

5. Try a Waffle-wich.
Another lunch staple you can cook in bulk, freeze, then use on an as-needed basis are waffles. "Every time I make waffles, I do a double batch, then lay the extras on a cookie sheet, slide it in to the freezer, then transfer them to a Ziploc bag once frozen. Then, when I'm packing lunch for my 8-year-old, I toast a waffle or two and spread with almond butter and banana slices," Le Beau says. When the waffles are whole-grain, it's a great way to get some fiber in to your kid's diet, and beat sandwich boredom.

6. Embrace Snacks
This is for all the mothers of grazers out there - it's OK if your kid will only eat snacks, Waldman says. Just follow the USDA guidelines and include tennis-ball sized portions of vegetables and whole grains, golf-ball sized portions of fruit and lean protein, and a ping pong ball of low-fat dairy. Choose from an assortment of their favorite snacks: a few cubes of cheese, dried mango, whole-grain crackers, cut up veggies with humus, and homemade popcorn or granola bar would fit the bill. "It feels better to pack a lunch that I know my son will actually eat, even if it looks more like a combination of snacks than a full meal."

7. Go Reusable While you could load your child's lunchbox up with pre-wrapped individual servings or lots of plastic baggies, there's a greener way. Use reusable containers, flatware, and even napkins, says Alexandra Zissu, author of The Conscious Kitchen and blogger at AlexandraZissu.com. We try for zero waste lunches whenever we can and it's actually pretty easy to succeed." Zissu's favorite lunch container is a tiffin, a stainless steel, stackable container that allows you to store a few different foods separately, while Le Beau likes bento-style lunchboxes, particularly LunchBots and PlanetBox. "My daughter typically goes to school with a cream cheese and jelly sandwich in one tiffin and cut up seasonal produce in another. If she's in a yogurt or applesauce phase, I pour it into a baby food jar with a lid," Zissu says.

Healthy school lunch options that do not need to stay cold?

as;lgkj0q2

There is no refrigeration, and I bring my lunch in a paper bag, so it's not in any sort of chilled lunchbox. I don't eat until around 12:30, so what could I bring besides pb&j everyday lol Thanks!

Answer
Most things that do not need heating up should work.

Any type of sandwiches, think turkey, lowfat cheese, lettuce, and/or tomato on whole grain bread. However, make sure that you keep the bread separate from the rest of the ingredients or else it would get soggy by lunchtime. Also, if you like, you can use those little packets of ketchup/mayo/mustard from fast food places if you need it (I would suggest mustard as it is the healthiest).

Tuna salad sandwich or egg salad sandwich would also work, but remember to keep the bread separate until right before you eat it. You can add lettuce, tomatoes, and/or cucumbers on top of these sandwiches for extra flavor.

You can also get little bags of baby carrots/ cut up celery/ grape tomatoes, some pita bread and hummus. Dip the veggies and pita bread in the hummus and you have a filling and healthy snack. Oh and you can buy the hummus and pita bread at the store premade and sometimes packaged together.

Another good option is a yogurt (it won't go bad) and an apple or any other fruit. You can add flax to the yogurt to make it more filling. Flax is sort-of like cereal, but usually in the nut isle at the grocery store.

If you have plastic throw-away containers you can get a salad topped off with nuts, cranberries, and a bit of cheese. The cranberries add such a good taste that you might not even need dressing with that.

And don't forget things like granola bars (you can even make them at home by just googling some recipes for more healthy options), low cal jello, trail mix snacks, and fruit salad cups.

Hope that helps a little.

Healthy sandwich recipes?

Q. Any really healthy sandwich recipes? NOTE: I'm on a diet, so no fattening things! PS NOTE: I'm 14, keep it easy. Something that I can take to school!
NOTE: I don't eat pig at all. Also I don't want meat/chicken in it xx

Answer
Choose whole wheat bread, because it's more nutritious than white bread, plus it keeps you feeling full for longer.

Add some salad (lettuce, sliced tomato and cucumber, for example) and then a sliced boiled egg, some smoked ham (or a non-meat alternative, something in slices) or some sliced low-fat cheese, then add some low-fat mayonnaise or salad dressing. Wrap the sandwich in foil to keep it really fresh. You can also take an apple or orange.

Make sure the salad makes up half the filling though, because that bulks out the sandwich and is almost calorie-free. If you want to make something you can scoop into the salad, you could finely chop some celery and onion, and stir it with reduced-fat salad dressing plus a can of tuna or some chopped boiled egg, and use that.

This is an easy vegetarian recipe for whole grain quinoa flavored with garlic and Parmesan cheese. Although this is a very basic recipe, you can vary it by adding some fried tofu or whatever veggies you happen to have on hand. For a vegan version of this quinoa recipe, I smothered my quinoa in nutritional yeast instead of Parmesan cheese and used olive oil in place of the butter.

Ingredients:

1 tbsp butter
1 small yellow onion, diced small
3-4 cloves garlic, minced
2 cups vegetable broth
1 cup uncooked quinoa
1/4 tsp salt, or to taste
1/4 cup Parmesan cheese

Preparation:
In a medium sized pan, sautee the onion and garlic in butter or olive oil over medium-high heat for 3-5 minutes, until onions are just soft. Reduce heat to medium low.

Add the vegetable broth and quinoa. Cover, and allow to simmer until liquid is mostly absorbed and quinoa is cooked, about fifteen minutes.

Remove from heat, and gently mix quinoa to distribute any excess moisture. Season with salt to taste, and top with Parmesan cheese, or, for a vegan version, mix in nutritional yeast instead of the cheese.

Makes 3 servings of vegetarian quinoa.

Healthy Sandwich Recipe, please help!!!!?

Billie Jea

Hey guys, Im on a diet and i go to a school that has no cafeteria which means we have to bring our own food. I usually take to school a turkey sandwhich with mayo, tomatoe and lettuce and white bread and i know it has many calories. I would like to know an easy to make sandwich recipe with not many calories and that is easy to take every where. Thank you.

P.S. Not a very hard to make sanwich, just a VERYYYYY simple sandwich with few calories, and which has fewer calories, brown or white bread? Thank you sooo much :P

Answer
First off, sandwiches are a fine food to eat if you're on a diet. They incorporate several food groups and include good nutrition. Whole grain bread is better than white bread - it has more fiber and better nutrients. If you want to cut calories, make a large half sandwich using only one piece of bread, but adding more meat and veggies. Lowfat wraps are also a good way to get lots of protein and veggies in sandwich form without too much bread.

The sandwich you're eating is perfectly healthy. Mayo is an OK condiment if used moderately. It's made with eggs and vegetable oil, and the fat in it helps to keep you full (thus preventing you from overeating and extra snacking later). Don't use more than 2 tbs.

I'm not a big mayo eater, and have lots of things I like to put on sandwich bread instead:
Mustard (try different kinds - Dijon, whole grain, spicy)
Cranberry sauce (great with turkey!)
Hummus
Pesto
Avocado (also has fat and calories but is super healthy)
Oil, vinegar and herbs
Salad dressing

You could also think about salads. They're a great meal, and easy to make the night before.

Easy, healthy, delicious recipes?

Agent C

I recently moved in with boyfriend and he does NOT eat well. He's always sick and I know it's because literally for breakfast, lunch and dinner he'll just work a bag of doritos. He's finally accepted that this might be the problem but he just doesn't LIKE healthy food. What are some healthy recipes with only a few ingredients what I could make for a very picky 21 year old :) Preferably something with a lot of protein and vegetables because he gets almost none. Also minimal meat since I'm a vegetarian and would prefer not to prepare it. Thanks!

Answer
First he should be willing to learn this stuff along with you, not just choosing and meal planning but cooking, to invest in his own health. Not just you. He will also have to approach this with an open mind, man up and learn to like something good for him. There are a million healthy foods. He can't possibly hate them all. He can't shut down. He will have to keep looking. Eventually my guess is he will just realize it is too hard to hate everything.

Second and very important is that he must remove his crutch foods, like the Dorito's. He should not allow himself the option of comparing the new items to the junk he loves. You might not make every switch all at once but if there is a serious go-to that he leans on an item that he cannot control his eating, then it has to leave the house. Then phase in healthiER items until he is eating better and better and feeling better.

Get your hands on corn tortillas and flour tortillas. You can use them as the base for tons of items, and use them to wrap good stuff and make it portable, making it easier to keep away from fast food and convenience store food. They are hearty and satisfying and a pretty simple food, not super healthy but not overly bad for you.

Also since he is a dorito guy...the thing that makes them bad is the spray painted on flavors and colors. You can keep him in plain corn tortilla chips. Even Dorito's brand is fine but plain. Baked is better, so is organic blue corn chips, some are even flavored with sesame! Dip them with fresh salsa, mashed black beans, homemade guacamole, etc. HEALTHY!

A crockpot of beans with onions, garlic, can be delicious as a soup. Scoop some out to whiz up in the food processor for dipping your chips, making burritos. Add some ground beef or ground turkey and some canned tomatoes and zippy spices, and cook it down for a chili. Watch the salt and the greasy meats, go crazy with herbs and spices, otherwise HEALTHY.

Switch out olive oil instead of butter for most of your cooking. Switch to olive oil mayonnaise. Do not use margarine. If you need butter for a recipe, try to use less. You can also use vegetable dips like hummus, guacamole, eggplant dip, for sandwich spread, chip dip, etc instead of greasy sandwich toppings, queso, condiments, etc.

Lean on the ethnic foods. Basically that means learn more about the local foods, herbs and spices and flavor pairings for those areas. Cajun, Mexican, Mediterranean, Italian, Indian, Chinese, Thai, etc....all these cultures have lots of seafood and vegetables, can be a bargain, too! When your recipe asks for lots of fat or salt, make swaps with things you know are better.

There is nothing wrong with a turkey meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and carrots or green salad on the side.

Pasta with sauteed veggies and some lean sausage? Healthy. You can get better pasta such as whole wheat, or you can swap out for brown rice.

PBJ is a pretty healthy meal if you do it right. All fruit spread (Polaner's), lower sugar peanut butter, whole wheat bread.

Does anyone have a recipe for a healthy turkey sandwich or wrap? Or just a healthy recipe that is delicious?

Answer

What is you all-time favorite sandwich recipe?

Q. Do you have a unique sandwich idea? I prefer healthy sandwiches (no bologna), but I'm getting bored with my usuals. What are some of your ideas to add variety to my lunch sandwiches? Different ideas for breads? ingredients? types of mustard? combinations of ingredients?

I already enjoy turkey w/ swiss, cheese, cranberry & stuffing ... another favorite is a good slice of baquette, w/ artichoke hearts, brie cheese, and toasted almonds, broiled til warm and gooey.
Wow, some great recipes so far! Things that have caught my eye are the olive spread and grilled vegies; the tofu; the Sharon sandwich; Calif chicken; tom, basil, mozzerella; and chicken w/ basil, etc.

I do enjoy PB& banana, I'll have to try w/ strawberry slices :-)

Tuna w/ BBQ sauce? what kind of bbq sauce?

Keep the ideas/recipes coming, and thanks!

Answer
grilled chicken breast
pesto sauce mixed with mayo
roasted red peppers
red onion, thinly sliced
provolone cheese
on herbed foccacia or ciabatta bread, or even in a pita

Then, if you have a grill (better yet, a panini grill), grill the completed sandwich until the cheese starts to melt and the bread gets crusty.

I think I have to get out of the food section. LoL. Drool =P

How to make a healthy dinner?

Kenny H

PS - I am not on a diet.I just want to eat some healthy food.I don't even want to loose weight.I do want to eat healthy food for a healthy life though.
I weigh around 94 pounds a month ago and when I went to the doctor a few days ago I weighed 104 pounds,I am 13 by the way.So everyday in the morning I eat waffles with syrup and milk. For lunch at school I eat a Cup of salad which includes salad, ham, those little bread thing, and ranch. For dinner I eat Fast-Food a lot.My mom goes to work at night and my dad doesn't know how to cook and he WILL NOT cook.So we usually go to McDonalds,KFC,Those bad fast-food shop.I totally understand its unhealthy but I can't go on without eating dinner.Sometimes I do make myself a meal at night to eat.On average I eat fast-food twice per week.So I've decide to eat some healthy food for dinner, however,I don't know ANY healthy recipes and I think I can cook.I just need recipes, steps, and ingredients so I can make myself some food for dinner at night and of course I want it healthy.Yes,I have cooked many things in the past,I learned it from my mom but some aren't healthy. So what are some recipes you recommend?

Answer
When you think about eating healthy, try to picture what a typical healthy plate should look like:

1/2 vegetables, 1/4 starch, 1/4 protein

You can also start or end your dinner with a piece of fruit.

If you go to www.foodnetwork.com and look up Ellie Krieger, she has loads of healthy recipes on there.

To get you started, I'll suggest you pick favorite vegetables (like carrots, potatoes, asparagus) and clean them up and cut them to roughly the same size. Toss them lightly in a little olive oil and salt and pepper them. Place them all on a piece of aluminum foil and roast for about 20 minutes at 425 degrees. (make sure to set a timer and turn the oven off when you are finished!)

There! Super healthy veggies.

Serve them with a grilled panini:

Get good bread (like ciabatta at your local bakery/grocery store). Fill with some thinly sliced turkey, mozzarella or provolone, and roasted peppers and sun-dried tomatoes). Coat the outside lightly with some olive oil.

Put into a hot fry pan (set stove to medium high) or panini grill... after a few minutes, flip it over and use a plate to press it flatter.

Serve the veggies and sandwich with a side of grapes or apple slices too. Perfect balanced, healthy meal.

1 ounce is how many deli chicken slices?
does anybody have a healthy sandwich recipe using deli chicken slices?

im stuck for ideas for lunch..

Answer
The amount of chicken you get in one ounce will vary with the thickness of the slice. If you don't have a scale then when you get your deli meat make sure you order only 3/4 of a pound (12 ounces). This will give you a better idea of how to measure an ounce - 12 one ounce servings, 6 two ounce servings or 4 three ounce servings.
When you make a sandwich use 100% whole wheat bread (more fiber, will fill you up more, easy to metabolize, etc.). Toast the bread. Skip the mayo and use mustard. Use low sodium turkey or chicken and low fat cheese. Tomato slices, lettuce or arugula.
I like to use red pepper hummus and don't use cheese or mustard (very moist and creamy). Lots of protein, low fat.
Happy Cooking!

Healthy groceries on a budget?

ebe b

I have $20 to spend on food a week. Anyone have any suggestions on healthy foods to make and buy. Here's some that I do have:
ramen noodles, canned soups, pb&j, sandwiches. Anyone else have ideas on what I can eat that would be cheap and healthy?

Answer
Oh man - I feel your pain! Once I had only $7 for an entire week of groceries - and I made it! :-)

Things you might consider:

- Buy out of the bulk bins as much as possible. The price can be a lot less and you can buy only what you need that way.

- RICE can save your budget! I have always found rice to be cheaper when purchased in bulk as a Mexican grocery store. Some ideas is to add rice to the canned soup you have on hand. It will add a ton of flavor and make an interesting alternative meal. Very filling, too.

- Consider shopping at a discount grocery store that you may not have thought of before. I always used to shop the big grocery stores like Safeway and Kroger because they have a great selection. But in comparing them to places like Food4Less and independent grocery stores - i could not believe how over priced those chain stores are!

- For protein, try looking for a pack of cheap hot dogs on sale. Dice them into the soup or casseroles made with rice. One pack will last the whole week.

- While dry beans in bulk are the cheapest, canned beans can also be relatively cheap and a fast way to make beans and rice for dinner. Consider buying a few spices in bulk to flavor the beans and rice.

- Find a loaf of cheap bread, most of the stores have a house-brand that is quite cheap. That one loaf can last the week - for toast and sandwiches or for the hot dogs.

- Do you have any soy sauce on hand? If so - use left over rice to make fried rice out of. An egg is a nice addition to fried rice, or use some diced hot dog.

- The most expensive part will probably be produce. I find great deals at the Asian grocery store for fresh produce. Buy stuff you are familiar with - now is not the time to experiment. Buy some bulk carrots, celery and whatever else is on sale. Pick up a few cheap potatoes - they are filling. I would not go for salad this week - as those ingredients are often expensive per pound and very perishable and they don't' fill you up much.

- Do yo have flour, baking powder, egg and milk on hand? Great! You have pancakes then! Pancakes are incredibly cheap when made from scratch.

Some other things to consider: don't buy anything to drink! Drink water only and use any milk you have for recipes on items such as pancakes or biscuits. And don't buy bottled water!!!! Tap water is the cheap way to go for a lean week. Carry a water bottle with you when out of the house. Even empty - there is always a place to fill it up at.

Stay away from anything that is already cooked and ready to eat - like the deli counter. None of it is as healthy as what you can make and it is all overpriced compared to making it yourself.

To be honest, this can be fun - it can be a challenge. The suggestions I made are really only for someone doing this short term. If this is your long term grocery budget - you might consider looking up where to get food boxes from charities in your area. Once you find a place that gives out food boxes - ask them where else you can go, they often have a list of all the area food resources that you might qualify for.

Best of luck!

Single man: How to cook nutritious meals?

Fiasco

I'm 25, male, single, live alone. I don't know how to cook, but I have some common sense.

Here's what I'd like to find: A cook book that focuses on cooking simple, nutritious, well-balanced meals but without any emphasis on dieting and losing weight. I want to start working out and want to hopefully GAIN weight. I'd like something that has a variety of recipes, simple instructions, a list of ingredients that a young single guy will understand (perhaps even "grocery lists"), doesn't have to taste good but needs to be nutritious, but no emphasis on weight-loss.

Is there anything out there like that?
I REALLY don't want to fall into a bad routine of eating fast food, eating expensive food at restaurants, or eating high-sodium frozen junk. I have to learn how to cook fresh food!
I guess I'm just frustrated that it isn't easy to heat nutritious. You can't just go out and buy nutritious food at a restaurant. So if I want to make it myself, well that isn't easy either.

I'm not trying to make any gourmet stuff. I don't care if it's nasty. I just want to know what to get at the grocery store, how much to get, a recipe, how long to cook it, and I want it to be well-balanced and nutritious. That's it. Is that possible?

Answer
I have a dozen good cookbooks and none are them are as good as this website, you just type an ingredient or catagorie on the search bar and get recipes.

Edit: This is so easy even my kids make it, You need 1lb ground beef, 1 jar of your favorite pasta sauce, (we like prego) 1pound bag of pasta. Brown the ground beef, drain fat, set aside. Cook pasta according to package directions, drain pasta add beef and sauce. We like shredded cheese on top.
You know you do not have to cook to eat healthy you can buy sandwich fixins, or healthy canned soups.

Healthy sandwich bread recipe?

Alyssa D

I need a HEALTHY quick bread recipe that i could use for sandwiches. This means i don't need too much flavor since the things i put on it to make the sandwich will add flavor. By healthy i mean no butter (or butter substitute), no sugar (or splenda), and no oil (besides a minimal amount of light tasting extra virgin olive oil). i want it to use baking soda or powder instead of yeast and i only want it to make one loaf. I currently have -
all purpose flour
whole wheat flour
extra virgin olive oil
1% milk
vanilla yogurt
eggs
honey
rolled oats
and many spices

Answer
Why do you think butter, splenda, butter substitutes, yeast, and oil are unhealthy? Do you research or just follow a silly crowd.
If you use the ingredients you want you will get a horrible product.
You might as well put your organic tuna on cardboard and eat it.
My advise to you is to make a nice bread and enjoy life.

Easy super super healthy lunches and breakfasts?

Q. ?

Answer
Healthy AND tasty waffles/pancakes recipe - serve with real maple syrup. Be sure to freeze extras to pop into the toaster on busy mornings for a quick breakfast. You could serve these with some farm-fresh sausage or bacon. (With no MSG or nasty preservatives.) ***Here is a blender batter pancake recipe that incorporates more varied grains and is 100% whole grain, and yummy, too! Hereâs a pancake/waffle recipe using sprouted grains.
#
Organic Oatmeal - you can make extra of this, too, and warm it up the next day for another fast breakfast. Also, try Sueâs baked soaked oatmeal recipe.
#
Health Egg Recipes - we eat a lot of eggs with cheese or egg sandwiches. Our favorite recipe at this post is the âfrench toast frittataâ for breakfast - itâs fast, easy, and everyone loves it.
#
Organic Homemade Oatmeal Bars/Granola Recipe - this one is great not just for breakfast, but for a quick snack anytime.
#
Smoothies - I freeze any extra in popsicle makers for a treat later. These are a great way to get more coconut into your diet, too.
#
My kids eat a lot of toast (best with whole grain fermented or sourdough breads - hereâs info on my homemade bread) with things on top like organic peanut butter, plenty of butter, organic or homemade jams with less sugar, local honey, etc.
#
Whole milk yogurt - even better: homemade raw milk yogurt. Remember, itâs not easy to find something other than low-fat yogurt, but whole milk products are much healthier! (I buy Stonyfield or Brown Cow brands.)
#
Fresh fruit - preferably local and organic.
#
Certain breakfast cereals as a âcompromiseâ food - read this post on breakfast cereals for more information. Also, check out the recipe for Graham Cakes in the comments at this post, too.
#
Sometimes if we have to go somewhere or if the kids arenât in the mood to sit down long enough to eat breakfast, theyâll just have some cheese

Healthy Vegatarian recipes?

Jane Doe.

Hey, does anyone know any good vegatarian recipes? Relatively easy to make, and something healthy. Anything with proteins and nutrients that vegatarians need. Also, do you know any foods that are good for vegatarians, like beans, eggs, and lentils? By the way, i'm 15, if that gives you a better idea of what i should eat.
Thank you. :)

Answer
I just made an awesome sandwich today which is super healthy AND delicious! It's inspired from a sandwich I ate at a really good Italian restaurant.

Grilled Portabella Mushroom Sandwich:

1 portabella mushroom cap, rinsed well and patted dry
1 jarred roasted red bell pepper
2 slices fresh mozzarella cheese
3 slices plum tomato (or any other ripe, red, juicy tomato)
1 tsp basil pesto
1 multi-grain baguette or roll

Marinate portabella mushroom in some olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salt, and black pepper for 10-15 minutes. Then grill the portabella mushroom for 5 minutes on each side or until tender. Place in sandwich bread and top with roasted bell peppers and sliced mozzarella. Put in toaster oven open faced until cheese melts. Then add sliced tomato, close, and enjoy! Yummy.

If you don't like mushrooms, you can substitute them for eggplants.

For eggs, I would recommend a veggie omelet. My favorite is a Spinach omelet. I just blanch some (about 1 1/2 cups raw) spinach, drain, and squeeze dry. Then crack two eggs in a bowl and add the spinach. You can also add some feta cheese as well if you like. Then heat up some olive oil in a pan (about 1-2 tbsp, just so the omelet doesn't stick) and add your egg mixture. Cook for about 3 minutes or until you can easily flip the omelet. Cook for an additional 30 seconds to 1 minute or until omelet is not runny. Serve with toasted whole-grain bread and you have a healthy delicious meal!

You can also make an easy vegetable sandwich with hummus. Just get some whole-grain pita bread, spread your favorite hummus inside, add some crumbled feta cheese, some sliced olives, cucumber, and tomato, and some romaine lettuce and you're done. This sandwich is the best to make when your in a hurry and don't have time to cook up a lunch.

For beans, you can buy a can of black beans and make a tex-mex (Mexican-inspired) salad. Just mix a 1/2 cup rinsed and drained canned black beans with chopped romaine lettuce, shredded cheddar cheese, chopped avocado, tomatoes, cucumber, red bell pepper, cooked corn kernels, and drizzle with lime-cilantro salad dressing (look for it in your grocery store or use this recipe: http://www.recipesource.com/side-dishes/dressings/00/rec0099.html). Toss to combine. Add some corn tortilla chips to it if you don't mind the extra fat and calories. =)

Hope this helped!

What are some healthy easy to make recipes?

Answer
Wild Alaskan Salmon Salad

* 2 cans of wild Alaskan pink salmon
* 1 chopped red onion
* 1 red pepper
* 3 cloves of minced garlic
* 2 diced dill pickles
* 1 cup of shredded Parmesan cheese
* 1/2 cup of your favorite mustard (I use a garlic aioli variety)
* salt and ground pepper
* fresh chopped parsley

Benefits of Omega-3s and Salmon
If you're unfamiliar with the virtues of Omega-3 fatty acids, consider this: a classic study of Greenland Eskimos whose diets included a high consumption of wild salmon resulted in a statistically low incidence of coronary disease and cancer. And, recent studies show that just one serving of salmon per week can significantly lower your chance of cardiac arrest. And did I mention that this stuff actually tastes good?
Prepare the Salmon
Start by making sure to drain your canned salmon well, then empty into a large mixing bowl. Break apart bigger chunks with a fork, and combine all of the remaining ingredients except for the parsley, and mix thoroughly.
Choosing Canned Salmon
Some reports show that farmed salmon actually has a greater concentration of Omega-3s than wild salmon, but farmed salmon also tends to be far higher in chemical contaminants that can lead to permanent neurological damage. Seems like a no-brainer to me. Be sure to read your salmon label closely to make sure it's Alaskan, wild, and doesn't contain any skin or bones, which are not only hard to fish out, they're gross.
Adjust the Salad Ingredients
The mustard and the natural juices from the vegetables are the only lubricant for this recipe, so you may need to add a little extra mustard to keep the salad from being too dry. If you're used to really creamy tuna or egg salads, you can also add a little extra virgin olive oil.
Serve the Wild Alaskan Salmon Salad
Wild Alaskan salmon salad is a delicious treat on its own - , or enjoy it in a whole wheat tortilla. This salad is also amazing heated, since it allows the Parmesan to melt and release its full flavor. Try toasting a salmon salad sandwich in your toaster oven, or indulge yourself and fry one up in a pan coated with a thin layer of coconut oil.

Apple-Citrus Salad with Avocado and Bacon

2 Tbs. Dijon mustard
1/4 cup cider vinegar
1 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1 head Bibb lettuce, rinsed well and torn into
2-inch pieces
2 Granny Smith apples, cored and ½â dice
2 ruby red grapefruits, peeled and sectioned
2 oranges, peeled and sectioned
1 bunch green onions, green portion only, chopped
Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste
3 ripe avocados
6 thick-cut bacon slices, fried crispy and chopped

In a small bowl, whisk together the mustard and vinegar. Add the olive oil in a slow, steady stream and whisk until smooth and blended.

In a large bowl, combine the lettuce, apples, grapefruits, oranges, green onions, salt, pepper and half of the vinaigrette and toss to mix.

To slice the avocados, using a chef's knife, cut into an avocado lengthwise until you hit the pit in the center. Carefully cut around the fruit through the skin and the pulp, without cutting through the pit. Holding the avocado in both hands, twist the halves in opposite directions to separate them. Using a large tablespoon, scoop out the pit and then scoop the pulp out of the skin. Slice the avocado as desired. Repeat with the remaining avocados.

Divide the salad among chilled salad plates. Garnish with the avocado slices and bacon. Drizzle a little of the remaining vinaigrette over each salad and serve immediately.

Jackson Salad

Salad:

2 cans Hearts of Palm, drained & chopped
2 cans Artichoke Hearts, drained & chopped
8 strips crisp bacon, crumbled (or more to taste)
1 small pkg. feta cheese, crumbled - 1 cup

Dressing:
1/2 small onion (about 1/4 cup)
6 Tbsp, cider vinegar
4 tsp. spicy brown mustard
1 tsp. sugar
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. black pepper
1 cup vegetable oil (can use some olive oil)

Assemble salad and toss.

In blender or food processor, combine all dressing ingredients. Add oil last and slowly. Pour dressing over salad, toss, and serve. Wonderful!

------------------------------------

Bibb Salad with Basil Green Goddess Dressing

1 cup good mayonnaise
1 cup chopped scallions, white and green parts (6 to 7 scallions)
1 cup chopped fresh basil leaves
1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (2 lemons)
2 teaspoons chopped garlic (2 cloves)
2 teaspoons anchovy paste
2 teaspoons kosher salt
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 cup sour cream
1 head Bibb lettuce
2 to 3 tomatoes

Place the mayonnaise, scallions, basil, lemon juice, garlic, anchovy paste, salt and pepper in a blender and blend until smooth. Add the sour cream and process just until blended. (If not using immediately, refrigerate the dressing until ready to serve.)
Cut each head of lettuce into quarters, remove some of the cores, and arrange on 6 salad plates. Cu
