Is this sandwich recipe healthy?

Val

I'm just going to have it once or maybe twice a week.
I'm just asking.

I'll use whole wheat bread, boiled chicken, one tablespoon mayonnaise, raw tomatoes, cucumber and a little bit of mustard.
Also, if necessary, one low-fat cheese slice and a little bit of ketchup >w<

Answer
Cheese and mayo will be the most caloric thing on the sandwich. But we certainly need fat in our diet. In terms of being healthy the sandwich you describe is pretty healthy. It's low fat, high protein, good amount of fiber, low carbs. Good balance. Try grilling or baking the chicken for a little more flavor.

Quick, easy, high-protein vegan meals?

Q. Lately I haven't had a lot of time to cook meals because I'm so busy. Usually what ends up happening is at the last minute, I find something quick to eat, and it's usually not very balanced; high-carb with not a lot of protein.

Does anyone have ideas for quick, easy, vegan lunches or dinners that are healthy and high in protein?

Answer
Make your meals and freeze them. I've been experimenting with veggie burgers only making them into veggie loaf and baking them. Then I always have sandwich filling on hand. There are so many recipes and I am avoiding refined soy products such as tofu and soy milk and using the whole beans.

How to get protein without eating meat?

iopaefkj

Hi,

I've recently decided to become a vegetarian and was wondering what foods I could eat that are a good source of protein. Unfortunately, I am extremely picky and don't like beans and am to scared to try the 'fake' meats lol. Also, if you could include some meals that are and some meals that are not pasta (my mom says that I eat to much pasta lol).

Please, any idea's would be useful !

I love pasta with cheese sauces and cheese and potatoes if that helps !

Answer
It is great that you are experimenting with your diet and it seems like you are searching for the right foods for you which is fantastic. As for vegetarian protein here are some options:

1) Beans: I would give them a try. It is a very healthy staple as a vegetarian. There are so many varieties that vary so much in taste.

2) Nuts and Seeds: Almonds, Cashews, Filberts, Hemp Seeds, Peanuts, Pumpkin seeds, Sesame seeds, Sunflower seeds, Walnuts (black)

3) Grains: Barley, Brown rice, Buckwheat, Millet, Oatmeal, Quinoa (very high source), Rye, Wheat germ, Wheat, hard red, Wild rice

4) Soy: Tofu, Edamame

I am not sure if you cook but if so here is a great sight for high protein recipes:
http://www.101cookbooks.com/high_protein_recipes/

If you want quick easy meals: Amy's veggie burgers are pretty good, you can add veggies to your sandwich or crumble it over salad, I don't know if a store near you sells Sunshine burgers but they are amazing too! My staple lunch/dinner is tortillas with veggies, nuts/seeds, beans/tofu and some spread/sauce (olive oil, pesto, hummus, avocado etc). I either make it into a burrito/wrap or use the tortilla as a pizza crust. Hope this helps!

California Grilled Veggie Sandwich

"I came up with this recipe to entertain friends. Since I am a semi-vegetarian and love to BBQ, I am always inventing something new. The first time I made this, my meat-lover friends raved about this dish! I prefer mesquite coals over gas barbeques...however, either works fine."

Original recipe yield: 4 servings.
Prep Time:30 MinutesCook Time:20 MinutesReady In:50 MinutesServings:4

INGREDIENTS:

1/4 cup mayonnaise
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/8 cup olive oil
1 cup sliced red bell peppers
1 small zucchini, sliced
1 red onion, sliced
1 small yellow squash, sliced
2 (4-x6-inch) focaccia bread pieces, split horizontally
1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese

DIRECTIONS:

In a bowl, mix the mayonnaise, minced garlic, and lemon juice. Set aside in the refrigerator.
Preheat the grill for high heat.
Brush vegetables with olive oil on each side. Brush grate with oil. Place bell peppers and zucchini closest to the middle of the grill, and set onion and squash pieces around them. Cook for about 3 minutes, turn, and cook for another 3 minutes. The peppers may take a bit longer. Remove from grill, and set aside.
Spread some of the mayonnaise mixture on the cut sides of the bread, and sprinkle each one with feta cheese. Place on the grill cheese side up, and cover with lid for 2 to 3 minutes. Adam W

I've been working all summer on improving my diet, limiting how much I eat, and working out more. Until the recent flood (in Toronto) I was running several times a week and I've lost a bit of weight. But my BMI is still in the High Zone so there is room for improvement.

I'm working full-time so there's not a lot of time left for food preparation. I also take a bagged lunch with a lunchmeat-sandwich every day, so if I could find a better option I'd use that. I also eat a Fibre cereal for breakfast and supper is wildcard depending on what my parent's cook.

I'm also using an app that tracks my Nutritional information based on foods I eat, and I'm quite concerned about my Sodium intake. Health Canada recommends 1,500 mg of salt a day and I'm usually in the 4,500 range. Another concern, I never get enough Protein in my diet.

I'm looking for healthy, tasty foods that I can incorporate or replace my staples with. Basically I need:
-Book Suggestions
-Recipes or link to recipes
-Low sodium, High protein
-I cannot eat Fish, Grapefruit, Pineapple, or Tropical fruits

I want to go on a diet to be healthy, but I don't want it to have to be too hard. I work out a lot, and am very fit, but I feel that I am not making the healthiest choices when it comes to eating. What should I do when it comes to disciplining my food choices?

Answer
Thats great that your active and want to eat healthy :)
Go for natural, organic foods. Eat smaller portions more often rather than big portions less often. Avoid things like soda, diet soda or any diet drinks, artificial colors or sweeteners, too much sugar, overly processed foods. Remember to drink plenty of water. Green tea is great to =) As well as water with lemon which is cleansing, good for your skin, digestive system.

You can also try out healthier alternatives with food.
Examples:

- Replace fast food french fries with homemade sweet potato or regular fries (made with a touch of olive oil, salt)

- For chips, you could try natural sweet potato chips, pita chips, fat free popcorn, pop chips or a natural potato chip brand like Kettle. You can also make your own chips by thinly slicing potatoes or sweet potatoes, glazing with olive oil, sprinkling with salt (pepper, basil if you'd like - cinnamon goes well with sweet potatoes) & baking them.

- Replace candy with things like frozen grapes or banana slices, dried mango strips, dried blueberries/cranberries/cherries/papaya, raisins, etc.

- Try a veggie burger on a whole wheat bun, topped with some things you like.

- If you want soda, try cold sparkling water with lemon or mixed with 100 % organic fruit juice instead

- Replace white pasta with whole grain in pasta dishes + add veggies (for example adding baby spinach to pasta, grilled vegetables to lasagna, broccoli/grated carrot/spinach/kale to pasta salad, etc.

- For a creamy pasta sauce try tomato sauce with goat cheese mixed in, for a healthier dish

- Enjoy pizza, try it on thin multigrain crust topped with fresh veggies.

- For healthier treat options try things like: frozen yogurt, vanilla greek yogurt with berries & grated dark chocolate, whole grain baked goods, etc. Desserts are fine in moderation :)

Here is a list with some healthy food ideas :)

What are some quick and easy whole wheat sandwich recipes?

saacommand

I'm trying to lose weight and I recently found out that whole wheat is better then the normal tasty bread for you.

What are some ways I can make whole wheat bread taste better? What kind of recipes do you got?

Answer
Whole wheat is great and actually adds flavor too!! Use it for whatever sandwiches you enjoy!

If you like peanut butter and jelly (and really who doesn't?) you can make it so much healthier. You can actually make it into a complete healthy meal, rather than a high processed sugar bomb with no nutritive value. Try a natural peanut butter (less sugar, no preservatives), whole wheat bread, and a sugar free all fruit spread (like Polaner's). It will offer you a balanced meal of proteins, fats, and carbs. Not to mention high fiber, low or natural sugars, and nutrient dense calories. This means you get a full belly and steady energy for hours.

A bit more of a grown up taste but not bad by any means!

Answer
I like to make vegetarian sandwiches. Ubber healthy.

Take high fiber bread such as Squirrly bread, spread on light or non fat cream cheese to each slice, add thinly sliced tomatoes and cucumbers (whatever appeals to you) and some alphalfa sprouts.
NUM!

Or for higher proteins roast chicken or turkey slices with roasted red peppers on the same type of bread with low fat mayo.

Just an idea anyway.

What foods/recipes are good for pregnant woman?

Q. This is my 2nd pregnancy. Last time around I had a rough time at the end of the pregnancy. So I am trying to eat healthier. I am so used to eating mcdonalds though( I work there, so its free) that I can't really remember how to cook and prepare meals. I don't want this kid to be unhealthy so I would like him to get as much healthy food as I can get.
I don't care much for onions & mushrooms.
Anything is appreciated(:

A. There is no special diet and recipes for a pregnancy. You should eat a healthy diet that gives all the nutrients to help your baby develop and grow.

Remember that the food you eat is the main source of energy for your baby growing inside. A pregnant women should know that she is not only responsible for herself, but also for the unborn child inside her. The child's physical and mental development after birth will have a influence of anything seen, thoughts and the food eaten by the pregnant woman.

1.There is no special diet for a pregnant women, but eating a healthy balanced diet that gives all the nutrients for your baby to develop and grow is recommended.

2.For the first 3 months, the diet of a pregnant woman should include food rich in iron, folic acid and foods high in calcium. You may take iron and folic acid tablets if you are pregnant or lactating.

3.Folic Acid & Birth Defects
Women should get enough folic acid from their diet before and during the pregnancy to prevent major birth defects involving baby's brain or spine, according to Canadian researcher Louise Pilote of McGill University, Montreal as reported in the British Medical Journal, May 2009.
A cup of Brussels sprouts supplies 93.6 mg of folic acid. Brussels sprouts recipe

4.Fortifying flour products with folic acid may cut the number of babies born with congenital heart disease, the most common of all birth defects.

5.In the next 3 month (i.e.3 to 6 month pregnancy), the woman needs extra protein and calcium. Look for foods with high protein.

6.Pregnancy & Weight Gain
Most women gain between 10-15 kgs, but too much weight gain should be avoided. However, the weight gain during pregnancy will vary according to your pre-pregnancy weight. According to the experts, an overweight woman is advised to gain only 7 kg (15 pounds) and an underweight woman to gain up to 18 kg (40 pounds).
7.Do Not Eat For Two
Many pregnant women wrongly think that they should eat for two. Note that you need only 200-300 extra calories daily in pregnancy, i.e. a cup of reduced fat milk or yogurt and a medium orange. This is because your body actually absorbs more nutrients from food you eat during pregnancy.
Researcher Alison Stuebeworking at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston found that pregnant women should avoid eating for two since too much weight gain is linked with complications at birth. Pregnant women who eat fried foods and dairy products and food for two are more likely to gain as much as 35 pounds. Women with vegetarian diets and eating more monounsaturated fat found in olive oil and nuts in early pregnancy are half as likely to gain an unhealthy amount of weight.

If you MUST eat at McDonald's, make healthier choices. Salads, fruits, and sandwich wraps, as opposed to a big Mac and fries is in your best interest.

Could anyone give me a list of easily attainable high protein foods?
Q. I'm trying out this whole vegetarian-for-as-long-as-possible diet (it's been 3 weeks), and I'm a bit worried about my protein intake. Beans are out of the question because they make me incessantly gassy (which only ends up making everyone uncomfortable), so I obviously need some other source of this ever essential nutrient. Any suggestions?

A. EVERYTHING has protein in it. =) Eating stuff like twinkies is the only way to miss out on protein. Beans, peas, lentils, nuts, seeds and even some pastas are VERY high in protein. If you eat a balanced diet and only eat junk food less than a couple times a week, you will never be deficient in protein.

There have been vegan Olympic gold medalists and a vegan woman can create an ENTIRELY NEW,HEALTHY HUMAN BEING INSIDE OF HER. Many of these children stay vegan and grow up to be perfectly healthy adults. So just keep yourself educated about what you eat and don't let anyone tell you that a veg diet is lacking anything essential.

If you want to become a lacto-ovo vegetarian, the transition should be quite simple. Almost all meats have widely available commercial replacements. All that you have to do is replace any flesh in your diet (beef, pork, poultry, seafood) with meat analogs or just leave it out altogether.

You should keep in mind that a journey such as this can be quite short but should just be the beginning of a longer one to a plant-based diet with no animal products. This is because of the reality of factory farming in which animals that are kept alive to produce milk, eggs, etc suffer much more and longer than animals that are raised to a certain weight and then slaughtered.http://www.veganoutreach.org/whyvegan/
http://meat.org
Some people use the word "vegan" in reference to this idea, but be aware that applying that label to yourself should always come with the inclusion of wise activism and advocacy.http://www.veganoutreach.org/advocacy/index.html
Two extremely important examples of this are that you should never speak to someone about vegetarianism/veganism without their consent and genuine interest or as a comment on what they are eating AND your dietary beliefs should never be used as an introduction or explanation of who you are as a person. Veg*ism should be something that comes up AFTER people get to know you and they offer you a situation that makes it confusing to withhold the information/discussion. Also, if you are presented something that you choose not to eat or you are
ordering food/eating together somewhere/picking the best place to eat.

When you you hold off on the subject until it's necessary and then act like it isn't a big deal at all, people are usually surprised and WAY more interested and curious than if you were to bring it up when someone's eating or just using it as a conversation starter.

A responsible vegan ALWAYS studies the subject of their own health and how to keep their body completely provided for in every sense. http://www.veganhealth.org/sh
To neglect their body is to define a plant-based diet as unhealthy and is the opposite of helping the animals.

Just to clear things up, the vegetarian/vegan diet is not composed of salads, vegetables, fruit and fake meat. Fruits and vegetables are always important but they DO NOT make up the largest portion of any healthy diet.
A balanced plant-based diet includes grains(breads, pasta, rice, cereal), legumes(soy, beans, peas, lentils), fruit and vegetables.

Being vegan can be an art, one whose challenge is to take things that involve the suffering of the innocent and change them into something free of cruelty.

A vegan woman can create an ENTIRELY NEW,HEALTHY HUMAN BEING INSIDE OF HER. Many of these children stay vegan and grow up to be perfectly healthy adults. So just keep yourself educated about what you eat and don't let anyone tell you that a veg diet is lacking anything essential.

Technically the term "vegetarian" does imply that you don't consume anything that comes from the body of an animal that requires killing it. Many ingredients such as gelatin and glycerin are found in many candies, Fig-Newtons, and many of other foods as well as rennet found in many cheeses.
http://www.happycow.net/health-animal-ingredients.html
The best thing to remember is to take your time so that for example: when you are comfortable not eating beef and pork you can then give up chicken when you are sure you can make the commitment permanently.
Depending on your age or reliance on parents or regional options, it may not be best to give yourself a label. The important thing is to do your best to make progress and be committed to your compassion towards animals. Never put your focus onto what you or other people use to describe yourself.

If you meet someone that talks down to people for eating meat, dairy, etc or to you because they think they are "more veg" than you, laugh in their face and tell them they are a disgrace to the entire philosophy. People like this only hurt the idea of veg*ism AND the animals. The point of all of this is to live compassionately and and as free from cruelty as you can, all the while maintaining your health and a positive attitude. People who don't maintain either, need not open their mouths and represent our beliefs.

If you actually choose to read all of this, I hope it helps. If not, feel free to e-mail me if you have questions.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is a Japanese analogy/proverb that goes like this, "The nail that sticks up is the one that gets hammered down". People are like this everywhere. When you tell your family that it is your personal belief that animals should not be eaten, they take a look at themselves and it can be subconsciously translated into, "What you do is wrong and I choose to be right."

Your parents have probably been taught a huge amount of misinformation by their parents and their teachers while growing up. You really need to research vegetarian diets and health before you even think about saying the "V-word" in front of your parents or anyone else.

When you have gathered enough information and feel confident in a vegetarian diet's ability to maintain or even improve health, you may mention to them that you have made the decision. They may be shocked, angry, worried, curious or many other things, but you must NEVER react to their behavior and always stay calm. If they are able to speak to you and respect your choice, please tell them everything and answer all questions. If they are rude, inconsiderate, judgmental, violent, or verbally abusive, refuse to continue any conversation until they can speak to you with respect.

The best advice is to study everything that you can about a healthy vegetarian diet and keep yourself in good shape (better than most people your age or than your friends/family if possible). If nobody that you know shows a genuine, positive interest in your choice, don't give them the privilege of the knowledge that you have gathered. Work your way around any attempts they make to trivialize your beliefs and if possible, go shopping with your parents and buy things that aren't obvious veggie fare. Instead of trying to sneak fake meat into the cart, toss in lentil soup, peanut butter, pasta, fruits & veggies or anything else that you have learned is needed to fill any gaps in your diet.

What are healthy dishes I can bring camping to share with a group?
Q. I am going car camping & RVing a few times this summer with family and friends. We always have plenty of tasty and unhealthy food, but and I would like to bring some healthier options. I’m kind of stumped for ideas of food that travels well and is healthy and can be made for a group. I am open to side dishes, snacks, desserts, or any other ideas. We will have limited refrigeration capabilities. Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Thanks!

A. Here are some healthy ideas :)

What are some quick and easy whole wheat sandwich recipes?

Q. I'm trying to lose weight and I recently found out that whole wheat is better then the normal tasty bread for you.

What are some ways I can make whole wheat bread taste better? What kind of recipes do you got?

What are some healthy dishes you can make in under 10 minutes?
Q. lets just say i eat WAY too much fast food. (but i'm not fat cuz i have a fast metabolism!) so i need some healthy fast food to make in 5-15 minutes. i'd prefer if they were'nt vegetables (i don't like them) but if they are, that's ok... but i REALLY don't like vegetables! lol thanks!

A. You can actually make sandwiches ahead of time and freeze them if you like cold sandwiches. They don't have to be unhealthy either. You can use a healthy type of margarine like smart balance light instead of a real cream butter to cut major calories. Mayonnaise actually doesn't freeze well, which is why this says to use butter. High cream contents also do not freeze well. You could always put mayo on it after it defrosted.

1 pack of sub sandwich rolls
1 package cold cut meat (or you can do multi-meat sandwiches)
1 pack cheese slices
Low fat margarine or butter

Spread a thin layer of the butter on both inside sides of the sub rolls. Place meat and cheese inside. Wrap each sandwich in cling wrap and then place them in individual freezer zip-locks or one big one. Take a sandwich out of the freezer 4-5 hours before you will eat it or the night before and place it in a cooler or fridge. It should be defrosted by the time you want to eat it. If you work or go to school full time, you can take it before work/school and it would be ready to eat by lunch. If you want to have lettuce and tomato on it, put those in a ziplock separately in the cooler when you take the sandwich out in the morning.

If you like tuna, chicken or have hard boiled eggs on hand you can make creamed tuna or chicken or eggs goldenrod.

2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons flour
1 cup milk
4-6 slices of toast
1 can tuna or chicken breast or 2 hard boiled eggs
Salt and pepper to taste.

1. Put the butter in a small or medium pot or skillet over medium heat.
2. When the butter it melted, add the flour and stir it to make a roux that looks like a light yellow paste. Turn the heat to medium high
3. Add the milk immediately all at once. Whisk continuously until it is thick and bubbles break the surface. Remove from the heat.
4. Using a fork, flake the tuna or chicken into the sauce. Salt and pepper to taste. If making eggs goldenrod, dice the eggs and put them into the sauce.
5. Cut the toast into little squares. Pour the sauce over the squares and enjoy. I make this all the time, it's super fast, cheap and easy. Canned tuna and chicken breast are high in protein and low in fat. This recipe makes 2 good sized portions or one huge one. The only disadvantage is that I don't believe it keeps in the fridge so you will have to eat it immediately. You could always half the recipe and put the rest of the can of chicken or tuna in a little tupperware in the fridge and use it later.

Quesadillas

2 tortillas
Cheese (any kind, cheddar or mexican blend works best)
Any other fillings you would like - canned chicken breast, jalapeño slices, fresh diced tomato pieces, black beans

Skillet: You can spray a non-stick skillet with non-stick spray, but it isn't necessary. Heat the skillet over medium heat. Place one tortilla on it. Sprinkle the cheese and other ingredients on it. Place the second tortilla on top. When the cheese just starts melting, flip it over. You can also flip it if the tortilla on that side is browning too fast. Eat it whole or slice it into wedges.

Microwave: Assemble the tortilla and place it on a microwave safe plate. Microwave it for about 30-45 seconds. Then eat and enjoy.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Black Bean Tacos

1 can black beans, drained and rinsed
several tortillas
Any toppings desired - shredded cheese, salsa, diced tomatoes, shredded lettuce, sour cream, guacamole

1. Cook the black beans in the microwave in 30 second intervals, stirring until hot.
2. Heat the tortillas for 15-30 seconds until hot.
3. Put the black beans in tortillas like a taco. Top with toppings. Enjoy. For any leftover black beans, put them in a tupperware in the fridge and use them in more tacos or quesadillas later.

Do you have a healthy recipe you would recommend to pregnant women?
Q. I am trying to conceive and I was wondering what foods are good to eat when pregnant. There are so many restrictions on what you can and can't eat so I was hoping some people might be willing to share their favourite Pregnancy Friendly recipes.

A. Bear in mind that I'm part of the group of people who thinks nuts are fine when you're pregnant. Not everyone agrees, but I personally don't think they have a lot of hard facts to support their claims that it causes nut allergies in your children.

I like grilled sunflower butter banana sandwiches on whole wheat. You slice the bananas and put them on one slice of whole wheat bread, sprinkle a tiny bit of brown sugar on top, spread sunflower butter on the other slice of whole wheat bread, put it together, butter the outside faces of the bread, then grill it just like grilled cheese. It was one of the high protein, high nutrient foods I could stand when I was queasy, besides being great comfort food.

I'm also a big fan of alfredo sauce on whole wheat spaghetti. Whole grains + calcium is good stuff.

There aren't really a ton of restrictions on what you *can* eat, you just have to stay away from those fishes that are mercury risks, any soft cheese made with a visible mold like blue or brie, and any fish, meat, or egg that is raw or undercooked. And alcohol, of course.
