Have you ever eaten negative calories foods? They are vegetables and fruits which contain so few calories that our body will need more calories to digest them than what they provide.

Try this negative calories sandwich:

Ingredients:

100 grams of cooked chicken fillet. Cut it so that it can be fitted into sandwiches.
2 slices of whole wheat bread. Slice it diagonally.
Four slices of tomatoes. Cut the tomatoes vertically, each cut is around 0.5cm in thickness
1 teaspoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice.
4 tablespoons of low fat mayonnaise
2 slices of cucumber. Peel the cucumber and remove both end. Then slice it.
1 teaspoon of chopped celery
1 teaspoon of olive oil
3 tablespoons of plain low fat yogurt
Salt, pepper and tomato ketchup to taste

Instructions:

Sprinkle the cooked chicken fillet with salt and pepper. Then mix the yogurt, mayonnaise and lemon juice in a bowl. Dip each chicken pieces into the dressing mix before putting it on the bread. Then arrange the cucumber, tomatoes and celery on the bread neatly. Last, sprinkle it with the olive oil and the remaining of the dressing.

Fritattas. You can just about add any vegetable or meat into it.
Lasagne or spaghetti bol and you grate and add anything. Makes heaps of meals to freeze.
A pasta bake with either peas, corn, chicken, mushrooms, tuna, broccoli.
A thick chunky soup. Heaps of meals from it.
Whole baked potatoes filled or topped with anything.
Roast a whole chicken and have leftovers for a curry, sandwiches, soup, stir fry.

Quick, easy, cheap, HEALTHY recipes for LUNCH?

I usually end up eating fried chicken nuggest, macoroni, pizza rolls... I want to try eating healthier... whole wheat sandwiches, etc. BUT, I don't know what to eat.
I want GOOD food... I don't like a lot of nuts at all. But it needs to be something quick, cheap, and easy that I can buy in bulk.
I need suggestions and recipes, I like to cook so I'm open to all suggestions!
I would like similar recipes for breakfast and supper, but lunch is my main concern right now. Thanks!

do salads and fresh bread, you can always add various salad toppings or dressings(like some people put thinly sliced fruit on their salads) and with fresh bread is good, or you know, a sub sandwich or pizza...or in the grocery stores frozen section or in the dry food parts so many meals that all you have to do is warm them up sometimes and then you have something to eat that tastes great too!

Sandwich recipes (reasonably simple, healthy, and priced)?

I poked around on the internet, but got overwhelmed and put off. Most recipes
1. call for gourmet ingredients only sold at Central Market
2. are unhealthy ("add 1/2c of mayo..."),
3. are complicated ("preheat the oven to 375 while you caramelize the onions...")
or 4. overdo the concept of 'cheap' (pb&j, bologna, etc)

I don't mind some prep work and spending - I just want things to be reasonable, you know? I want something tasty that I can throw together in <30min that won't make me fat, broke, or have a heart condition. Thanks! =)

roast beef with whatever you like on it...

It's good and inexpensive to experiment with different kinds of mustard, vegetables, breads and meats. I Love alphalpha sprouts on almost anything and ciabatta bread...you can make wraps instead, it's easy to find some good flavored tortillas, and if sandwiches are boring you, switch to experimenting with salads for a week or so. Even fruit salad. You can also do a lot with yogurt...

Find a grocery store that has a great selection of vegetables at decent prices, where I am Fred Meyer has the best selection for the best price so I only buy from there. Wal-Mart always has bananas for 28 cents a pound, so I only buy them there....

I'll give you my Very favorite sandwich recipe that I made up and submitted to AllRecipes (I don't think they took that one though...I think there was a similar recipe they already had). It's not exactly what you are looking for, but it's great and you can make the stuff for it in larger quantities if you like it and just keep it in the fridge. The pesto sauce and artichoke/olive stuff can stay good in the fridge about a week.


Ingredients

* 1 package of Hoagie Style rolls
* 1 small jar black olives, sliced
* 2 cans artichokes, drained
* 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese
* 3 tbsp olive oil
* sun-dried tomato spread
* 1 package of creamy pesto sauce
*

Directions

1. Prepare creamy pesto sauce according to package directions.
2. In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat.
3. Add drained artichokes and black olives to skillet, stirring often for about 15 minutes, while breaking up artichokes.
4. Pre-heat oven to 350.
5. Add the feta cheese to artichoke and olive mixture, heat an additional 5 minutes or until cheese is melted and mixed in.
6. Split and toast the hoagie rolls in the oven, about 5 minutes.
7. Spread the sun-dried tomato spread on the bottom side of the hoagie roll, layer a generous amount of the artichoke mixture on top of that, drizzle with about 2 tbsp of the creamy pesto sauce on top, add the top piece of the roll, and enjoy!

Hello. I am a college student and I need some cheap yet satisfying recipes I can make besides sandwiches and cup of noodles or ramen. I don't make tons of money since most of it goes to school, but I was thinking rice with some chicken legs is cheap. But that is all I really know and am tired of eating that all the time. I want it to be healthy and no hotdogs or bologna or canned foods.

I'm a sophmore college student living on my own, and between paying off student loans, car insurance, rent and everything else, there isn't much left over to buy healthy meals, and so unfortunately I buy whats cheap. Ramen noodles, macaroni and cheese, etc. The lifestyle has gotten to me a little bit as far as weight goes, and so I joined a gym yesterday ($10 a month) But I know it won't get better unless I eat better foods along with working out. Also, I can't really cook to save my life, so the more simplistic it is, the better. I'm open to most every kind of food, except seafood, I know fish is good for you..But its something about the smell.
Any ideas, would be and are much appreciated. Thank You!!

Honestly, learning to use your kitchen is best. But, understand if you just learn the basics of say: soup, salad, and sandwiches -- you're going to have THOUSANDS of quick, cheap, and easy meals on hand.

Soup. By far soup, even homemade, is cheap cheap cheap 5 bucks = 1 pot

Sandwiches too: go ahead and get the good bread/ meats/ cheese/ fixings -- because in the end they'll give you more nutrition and pleasure at a reasonable cost

Rotisserie chicken. Buy and shred: make tacos, make sandwiches, use over salads

Any dirt cheap healthy recipes? ?

You are in a tight spot. I was once in your situation and I learned 2 things. The 1st is that you CAN eat healthy on a budget. 2nd is things DO get better.
Certain things like meat, dairy, and prepared food is usually more expensive. Use canned tuna, chicken, sardines, and salmon packed in water. Compare prices and labels. Cans that are in the middle shelves of the display are usually more expensive than the ones on top or boton shelves. But DO compare labels. Cheap doesn't always mean healthy. Compare the cost of fresh, canned, and frozen veggies. Eat beans, lentils, and peas, they are very cheap and very healthy. Don't be ashamed of using coupons and shopping when stores have big sales. Here are some ideas:
*tuna or salmon casserole
*chicken salad
*chicken tacos
*tuna or salmon croquettes
*pasta with tuna or sardines
*sardines in tomato sauce
*sardine sandwich
Here are some recipes. I make these all the time and just eye ball it so adjust ingredients to your taste.
***Tuna salad***
â¢1 can tuna
â¢1/4 of a small onion
â¢2 celery ribs
â¢1 cup mix of any other crunchy veggie that can be eaten raw like bell peppers, radishes, jicama, carrot, cucumber
â¢1/2 tablespoon fat free mayo
â¢1 tablespoon light vinaigrette
1. In a bowl mix mayo and vinaigrette until well combined.
2. Chop onion, celery, and veggies. Put in bowl. Mix with dressing.
3. Add tuna and toss.

***Pasta Primavera***
â¢1 small package
â¢1 cup frozen spinach
â¢1/2 cup frozen chopped veggie mix
â¢4 garlic cloves sliced
â¢1 jalapeño or red pepper flakes if you like spicy
â¢cheese if you have some extra cash
1. Cook pasta acording to directions. Save cooking water for veggies.
2. Cook veggies according to directions. Don't over cook, veggies should be crunch.
3. While pasta and veggies cook fry the garlic and peppers (if using) in olive oil.
4. Toss pasta, veggies, oil, and garlic 'chips'.
Add cheese if using.

***Lentil or Bean Soup***
â¢2 cups cooked lentils or beans
â¢1 cup chunky salsa
â¢4 or 5 slices bacon chopped
â¢1 can low sodium chicken broth
â¢fresh pico de gallo salsa
1. Fry bacon in large pot. Remove most of the fat.
2. Add chunky salsa and sautee briefly.
3. Add lentils or beans and broth. Bring to a boil, season with salt and pepper. Remove from heat.
4. Serve with a big spoonful of pico de gallo

***Chicken Pasta***
â¢1 can chicken
â¢1 can diced tomatoes
â¢1 package large pasta shells
â¢garlic, chopped
â¢onion, chopped
â¢Italian spices
â¢cheese
1. Cook pasta according to package
2. While pasta is cooking sautee onion and garlic.
3. Add tomatoes, spices and chicken.
4. Toss chicken with pasta and top with cheese

Cheap Healthy Salads Recipes?

I'm looking for healthy salad recipes that I can make at home on a strict budget of 50 dollars for the whole month to cover 1-2 out of 3 meals a day. The reason is I'm trying to lose weight and my goal is to prepare something healthy for at least two of my daily meals since dinner is usually cooked for the house by someone else. Salads have caught my attention just because I really like salads and my diet currently has few fruits and veggies in it so I'm killing two birds with one stone there. Anyone have some salad recipes that can cover lunch for a week that incorporate chicken (i hate chicken breasts it's so dry) and some kind of pasta for around 300-350 calories a serving? I'm not a picky eater but I'm also not a chef. If the salads voluminous enough I wouldn't mind swapping out snacks for salads and eating a lighter lunch. If it helps I'll lay out the regime the nutritionist gave me.

Breakfast: 300-500 calories
Snack: 100 calories
Lunch: 300-500 calories
Snack: 100 calories
Dinner: 400-500 calories

The recommended amount of calories consumed was less than 2000 calories with regular walking exercises. I'm morbidly obese trying to get healthy so obviously I'm not going to actually consume 2000 calories a day. I've looked uo all the tips there can be found on stretching a meal I don't need more tips I'm asking for salad recipes to try.

I used to make fairly cheap salads for lunchâa wedge of cabbage, some carrot, celery and cucumber sticks, sliced yellow paprika and red cherry radish, a few cherry tomatoes, 3-4 slices of rolled supermarket ham, and 6-8 half-inch cubes of cheese, usually natural, sharp cheddar. For dressing? A pinch of salt and a dash of pepper! VERY occasionally, my wife would put a teensy tub (about one ounce) of miso + mayo + soy or Worcestershire sauce, for dipping the vegetable sticks and sometimes I'd throw a whole, or half a boiled egg into the lunch-box. I could eat this 3-4 days running, but would want a ham & cheese sandwich or a burger at least once per week

I've been eating only fresh fruits for breakfast for the past 18 months, and lost 28lbs (13 kilos) in less than a year without any change in exercise, which shocked my doctor! My previous weight was 93kg/200+lbs (borderline obese at 5'11") and my last 'target' weight was 88kg, but I was a smidgen under 80kg at our next meeting. I was eating 'mostly' salads for lunch, but I could also do a small ham and *real* cheese bagel (180-190kcal) and a cup of cold Vichysoisse/corn/pumpkin soup (70-80kcal) and I could work all evening on that.

Best of luck with the weight loss. Watch out for the 'stealth calories' in salad dressings, please!

Mayo, Ham, Turkey, lettuce, Egg, and Cheese. And i use white bread. (cheap stuff from costco :P) Thank you for your recipes and tips on how to make a Great sandwich.

Turkey Club Sandwich
Serve this double-decker sandwich with carrot and celery sticks and red and green grapes. If you don't like Swiss cheese, substitute any other variety, such as cheddar cheese.
4 tablespoons fat free mayonnaise
4 teaspoons fresh basil, chopped
12 slices sourdough bread, toasted
8 ounces turkey breast lunch meat
6 slices bacon, fried crisp
4 romaine lettuce leaves
8 slices tomato
4 slices Swiss cheese
In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise and basil. Spread 1 teaspoon of mixture on each slice of bread.

Place 1 slice of bread on plate. Top with 1 ounce turkey and 1 1/2 pieces of bacon. Add another lsice of bread, 1 ounce turkey, 1 lettuce leaf, 2 slices tomato and 1 piece of cheese. Top with last slice of bread. Place a toothpick in each half of sandwich and cut down the center. Serve immediately

Tuna Salad Sandwiches
For variety, add cucumber or tomato slices to each sandwich.
2 cans albacore tuna, in water, drained
½ cup celery, diced
½ cup apple, diced
1 teaspoon lemon juice
â cup fat free mayonnaise
4 lettuce leaves
8 slices whole wheat bread
In a small bowl, flake tuna with fork. Add celery, apple, lemon juice and mayonnaise. Stir well.

To serve, place 1 leaf of lettuce on a slice of bread. Top with 1/4 of tuna mixture, spread to edges and top with another slice of bread. Serve immediately.

Philly Steak Sandwich
Cheddar cheese is high in fat and calories, so limit the cheese to 2 tablespoons for each sandwich. For variety, use roast beef that has been rubbed with Italian seasonings.
1 bell pepper, thinly sliced
1 onion, thinly sliced
12 ounces lean roast beef, shaved thin
4 whole wheat buns
½ cup Cheddar cheese, shredded
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Coat a baking pan with cooking spray.

Spray frying pan with cooking spray. Over medium heat, saute the peppers and onions until they soften, about 3 - 5 minutes. Add the roast beef and saute for an additional 2 -3 minutes.

Place 1/4 of the roast beef mixture on each bun and place on baking pan. Top each with 2 tablespoons of cheese. Bake until cheese has melted, about 2 - 4 minutes. Serve immediately.

Mexican Roll Ups
A tasty alternative to sandwiches for a lunchbox or picnic. Roast beef, chopped tomatoes, bell pepper and seasonings are rolled in whole wheat tortillas and wrapped in tin foil. Easy to transport and neat to eat.
6 whole wheat tortillas
6 leaves romaine lettuce
1 ¼ pounds sliced roast beef
1 cup chopped tomatoes
1 cup chopped red bell pepper
2 tablespoons olive oil
3 tablespoons red wine vinegar
½ teaspoon ground cumin
For each roll up, tear off about a 15 inch piece of wax paper or aluminum foil. Place the tortilla on the paper or foil. Top with lettuce leaf, about 3 ounces of beef, divide tomatoes pepper, oil, vinegar and cumin evenly over all tortillas.

Begin rolling the paper or foil over the tortilla to encase the filling. Roll until the sandwich is completely rolled.

To eat, peel back the paper or foil

Ham and Egg Salad
1 ½ cups fully cooked ham, cubed
6 egg, hard boiled, chopped
½ cup celery, chopped
½ cup sweet pickle relish
½ cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons honey mustard
Combine first 4 ingredients. Blend together mayo and mustard, add to ham mixture and toss lightly. Chill well before serving

Chicken Tostadas
Chicken breasts make a fine change of pace for tostada filling, along with tomatoes, lettuce and bell pepper. A garnish of salsa with fat free sour cream and grated cheese keep this dish a healthy one.
1 ½ pounds chicken breasts, cooked
3 cups romaine lettuce, torn into bite size pieces
½ cup bell pepper, chopped
½ cup chopped tomatoes
6 flour tortillas
6 tablespoons fat free sour cream
6 tablespoons salsa
6 tablespoons Cheddar cheese, grated
Heat tortillas by placing them in a large dry skillet over medium high heat, turn one until golden and puffy.

Place tortillas on plates, evenly distribute remaining ingredients over tops of toasted tortillas. Serve immediately.

Chicken Salad
3 - 4 cup cooked chicken, diced
1 cup celery, chopped fine
1 cup apple, peeled, cored and chopped fine
1 teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon pepper
â teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon dried parsley
â teaspoon dill weed
½ cup mayonnaise
¼ cup sour cream
Combine all ingredients. Chill overnight before serving.

About how many sandwiches will a can of shredded chicken make?

I am making shredded chicken sandwiches for my daughters birthday. I am just using the big can of the boned chicken, half of a box of Ritz crackers, and a big can of cream of chicken. About how many sandwiches do you think that will make? I don't know whether to double it up or not...
Its like the giant can! Im not sure how much but it usually fills a crockpot!

Probably only two if you don't mix the shredded chicken up with chopped lettuce & mayo.... if only mayo on the bread & the shredded chicken, then two.... if you are gonna make a chicken salad with it, then about 3.... =)
A can of tuna says 2.5 servings but really only think of it as two if not mixing with chopped lettuce, sugar, mayo, etc.... I use one can tuna per tuna salad sammy recipe which I put 2 cups chopped lettuce, mayo, etc, in & still only get 3 sammies.... =)
But you did say a big can so it may be bigger than the little tuna cans. In that case just read the serving size & servings per container on the nutrition label. If it says half a serving (2.5 servings) just round down. =)

For the little amount of chicken you get per can, it's cheaper to buy a bag of frozen chicken breasts if money is a factor.... =)

Just like a can of Spag-Os, cannot understand it.... it's high in sodium, you practically have to eat the whole can for one person to be satisfied & it's like baby mush.... buying a jar of spag. sauce & cooking some spag or elbow noodles is soo much cheaper/serving, wayyy healthier, & you get way more than one serving.... go figure... =/

My dad's doctor just recommended the DASH diet to control his blood pressure. He lives alone most of the time seeing i go to college out of state. I think the extent of his cooking skills are cereal and ham sandwiches which are not on the diet plan. What are some healthy cheap recipes to try to try out?

A bag of salad, and a bottle of vinaigrette or italian dressing. Get a container of cherry tomatoes for him to add, and he'll think he's a chef.

fresh (not frozen or canned) veggies and the microwave steamer bags, like the link below shows. Cut up the veggies, put them in the bag, and nuke 'em for whatever the bag says - usually 2-3 minutes. So easy even a dad can do it.

Place 1/4 of the roast beef mixture on each bun and place on baking pan. Top each with 2 tablespoons of cheese. Bake until cheese has melted, about 2 - 4 minutes. Serve immediately.

Mexican Roll Ups
A tasty alternative to sandwiches for a lunchbox or picnic. Roast beef, chopped tomatoes, bell pepper and seasonings are rolled in whole wheat tortillas and wrapped in tin foil. Easy to transport and neat to eat.
6 whole wheat tortillas
6 leaves romaine lettuce
1 ¼ pounds sliced roast beef
1 cup chopped tomatoes
1 cup chopped red bell pepper
2 tablespoons olive oil
3 tablespoons red wine vinegar
½ teaspoon ground cumin
For each roll up, tear off about a 15 inch piece of wax paper or aluminum foil. Place the tortilla on the paper or foil. Top with lettuce leaf, about 3 ounces of beef, divide tomatoes pepper, oil, vinegar and cumin evenly over all tortillas.

Begin rolling the paper or foil over the tortilla to encase the filling. Roll until the sandwich is completely rolled.

To eat, peel back the paper or foil

Ham and Egg Salad
1 ½ cups fully cooked ham, cubed
6 egg, hard boiled, chopped
½ cup celery, chopped
½ cup sweet pickle relish
½ cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons honey mustard
Combine first 4 ingredients. Blend together mayo and mustard, add to ham mixture and toss lightly. Chill well before serving

Chicken Tostadas
Chicken breasts make a fine change of pace for tostada filling, along with tomatoes, lettuce and bell pepper. A garnish of salsa with fat free sour cream and grated cheese keep this dish a healthy one.
1 ½ pounds chicken breasts, cooked
3 cups romaine lettuce, torn into bite size pieces
½ cup bell pepper, chopped
½ cup chopped tomatoes
6 flour tortillas
6 tablespoons fat free sour cream
6 tablespoons salsa
6 tablespoons Cheddar cheese, grated
Heat tortillas by placing them in a large dry skillet over medium high heat, turn one until golden and puffy.

Place tortillas on plates, evenly distribute remaining ingredients over tops of toasted tortillas. Serve immediately.

Chicken Salad
3 - 4 cup cooked chicken, diced
1 cup celery, chopped fine
1 cup apple, peeled, cored and chopped fine
1 teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon pepper
â teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon dried parsley
â teaspoon dill weed
½ cup mayonnaise
¼ cup sour cream
Combine all ingredients. Chill overnight before serving.

I'm a terrible chef, but I'm moving into my own place soon and cannot rely on quick dorm food anymore :(
I don't want to develop unhealthy habits, so I've decided to begin cooking for myself. What are some recipes that are cheap, low-calorie/healthy, easy (around 5 ingredients or less), and fast?

It is one of my favorites. You don't have to add all the ingredients for many recipes like the one below. I leave out the peppers and use any pasta sauce you like. I buy big basil plant at Trader Joe's for a just a couple of bucks. Using fresh ingredients as much as possible really makes a big difference. =)

Mozzarella Chicken Sandwich

Ingredients

* 1/4 cup (about 2 ounces) sun-dried tomato pesto (such as Classico)
* 2 tablespoons fat-free mayonnaise
* 3/4 pound skinless, boneless chicken breasts
* 1/4 teaspoon pepper
* 1/8 teaspoon salt
* 1 teaspoon olive oil
* 1 (8-ounce) loaf ciabatta
* 12 large basil leaves
* 3/4 cup (3 ounces) shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese
* 1/2 cup sliced bottled roasted red bell peppers
* 1 large tomato, thinly sliced

Preparation

Combine pesto and mayonnaise in a small bowl, stirring to blend.

Sprinkle chicken with pepper and salt. Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add chicken, and cook for 3 minutes on each side or until done. Remove chicken to cutting board, and cool slightly. Cut chicken lengthwise into thin slices.

Preheat broiler.

Cut ciabatta in half horizontally. Place bread, cut sides up, on a baking sheet. Broil 3 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove bread from pan. Spread pesto mixture evenly over cut sides of bread. Arrange the chicken slices evenly over bottom half. Top chicken evenly with basil leaves, and sprinkle cheese over top. Place bottom half on baking sheet, and broil 2 minutes or until cheese melts. Arrange bell pepper and tomato over cheese, and cover with top half of bread. Cut into 4 equal pieces.

I like to make chicken salad for lunches. It’s healthy, fast, and full of protein to keep you full for a long time. Just boil 4 skinless/boneless chicken breasts (around $7), then dice into small squares. Mix in a big bowl with 1 cup mayonnaise, ¼ cup mustard, 1 tsp lemon juice, 1 diced onion, 5 diced stalks of celery, salt & pepper (around $5). So, for a total of only 12 bucks, you have lunch for every day of the week.

I pre-portion the Chicken Salad into ziplock sandwich baggies and keep in the fridge, so they are ready to go for each day. Just use a small insulated lunch bag with a freezer pack, to keep the food fresh until lunch time. For a snack, I bring along a bag of baby carrots and ranch dressing. I work in an office, and this is a great lunch for Mon-Fri. Saves me bundles of money and is much healthier than eating fast food every day. If you want, you can take bread to put the salad on, but since I eat low-carb foods, I skip the bread.

An excellent subsititute for butter, cheese and fatty meat is avocado. You might hear people say that it is high in saturated fat (true!), but it is still much, much better for you than other fillings, especially if you have more than one (ie butter AND cheese).

Rather than having a boring sandwich with salad and not much else, try adding avocado to chicken and salad; alfalfa sprouts, spanish onion, carrot, lettuce etc. It's nice with salt and pepper, or a light dijonaise as well, and quite healthy! A lot of lettuce seems quite bland and won't add to a sandwich, so if you can afford it, go for different varieties. Asian ones especially have quite a lot more taste than a traditional cos or iceberg.

I know it's not easy to get Vegemite etc in the States, but any of those yeast or beef extract spreads are very nice on rice-cakes with alfalfa sprouts - for some inexplicable reason, it tastes a bit like chicken! Don't make the mistake of spreading it thickly, you only need a smear. The rice cakes are quite filling, but bland. This way, you don't add heaps of fat, but you get filled up!

Another thing that might be hard to find in the States is tinned beetroot - I'm not sure if you have it at all... It's an aquired taste, but adds sweetness and freshness to sandwiches with few nutritional negatives. If you can get it, it should be tinned in its own (pink!) juices, I guess its kind of pickled...? And it is generally sliced, but you can get baby ones like this too, I think. It's not nice by itself, and will go soggy fast, so it's best in a salad sandwich, eaten straight away.

On that note, pickled things in general are probably a good way to add a lot of flavour without too much fat or salt...

For something a little unusual, you can make fillings of leftover lentil or chickpea salad (you can find recipes everywhere online), which is incredibly cheap to make. If that seems quite heavy, you can substitute traditional bread for lavash or pita bread.

And always eat a wholegrain bread - not only is it full of things you don't get in white bread, it will fill you up, and contributes a lot more to you RDI for grains.

3 cups chicken breast (cooked and cubed)
1 cup pineapple (diced)
1/2 cup celery (diced)
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup raisins
1/4 cup walnuts
1/8 cup dried cranberries
2 Tablespoons sweet onion (minced)
2 Tablespoons apple juice

Combine all ingredients in a bowl until well combined and chill. Serve with a lettuce garnish.

***You can use the chicken salad as a sandwich filling.***

My dad's doctor just recommended the DASH diet to control his blood pressure. He lives alone most of the time seeing i go to college out of state. I think the extent of his cooking skills are cereal and ham sandwiches which are not on the diet plan. What are some healthy cheap recipes to try to try out?

If your Dad doesn't like to cook much, the best thing you can offer him regarding recipes that will promote lower blood pressure is simplicity. In this vein, let's focus on the basics regarding diet and blood pressure.

Too much sodium is responsible for a great deal of high blood pressure problems. Most Americans get way too much of it in their diets, and most of it isn't due to sprinkling more table salt on food either. Processed food is loaded with it. Why not do grocery shopping for your father, or get somebody else to do it for you? Read the labels, and reject anything with a lot of sodium.

Avoid foods with LDL cholesterol as well. This is the "bad" cholesterol, and can be a big contributor to blood pressure problems. The Mayo Clinic recommends eating oatmeal and oat bran, nuts, especially walnuts and almonds, and fish high in omega 3 oils -- salmon, mackerel, tuna, lake trout, sardines, herring.

Focus on the simple recipes for your father. How much cooking does a bowl of oat bran with skim milk take? If that's too bland for him, sprinkle a few blueberries on top. Skim milk is an ideal food for high blood pressure too, since it contains calcium and vitamin D, and the two have a synergistic effect.

Potassium helps lower blood pressure too. Foods rich in potassium include bananas, baked potatoes and soybeans. As bad a cook as your Dad may be, peeling a banana a few times a day is something I'm sure he can handle. I hope you see what I'm driving at here -- simple ways he can lower his blood pressure. Don't try to turn him into Julia Child here.

Half an ounce of dark chocolate per day has also been shown to lower blood pressure. The higher percentage of cacao in it, the better. For more tips, please read the resources in the source box.

A bag of salad, and a bottle of vinaigrette or italian dressing. Get a container of cherry tomatoes for him to add, and he'll think he's a chef.

fresh (not frozen or canned) veggies and the microwave steamer bags, like the link below shows. Cut up the veggies, put them in the bag, and nuke 'em for whatever the bag says - usually 2-3 minutes. So easy even a dad can do it.
