SIMPLE RECIPE FOR HEALTHY SANDWICH? WHAT IS YOUR OPINION?

Archangel

Ok so while trying to eat healthy i put together this sandwich which doesn't taste too bad: Get two slices of wheat bread. One gets peanut butter, the other gets nutella. Slice a banana into flat pieces which go inbetween. As simple as that.

Try this if ONLY if you are not allergic to nuts.

What is your opinion of the sandwich recipe i made? How healthy is it? How tasty?

Answer
Sorry, I can't say this is healthy. It's probably tasty; both peanut butter and Nutella are yummy. But have you looked at the ingredients of Nutella? The first ingredient is sugar. The second is palm oil. This is not health food -- it's a dessert topping.
Not your fault though; they market it as though it was a health food, but I think this is misleading.

Healthy Vegatarian recipes?

Jane Doe.

Hey, does anyone know any good vegatarian recipes? Relatively easy to make, and something healthy. Anything with proteins and nutrients that vegatarians need. Also, do you know any foods that are good for vegatarians, like beans, eggs, and lentils? By the way, i'm 15, if that gives you a better idea of what i should eat.
Thank you. :)

Answer
I just made an awesome sandwich today which is super healthy AND delicious! It's inspired from a sandwich I ate at a really good Italian restaurant.

Grilled Portabella Mushroom Sandwich:

1 portabella mushroom cap, rinsed well and patted dry
1 jarred roasted red bell pepper
2 slices fresh mozzarella cheese
3 slices plum tomato (or any other ripe, red, juicy tomato)
1 tsp basil pesto
1 multi-grain baguette or roll

Marinate portabella mushroom in some olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salt, and black pepper for 10-15 minutes. Then grill the portabella mushroom for 5 minutes on each side or until tender. Place in sandwich bread and top with roasted bell peppers and sliced mozzarella. Put in toaster oven open faced until cheese melts. Then add sliced tomato, close, and enjoy! Yummy.

If you don't like mushrooms, you can substitute them for eggplants.

For eggs, I would recommend a veggie omelet. My favorite is a Spinach omelet. I just blanch some (about 1 1/2 cups raw) spinach, drain, and squeeze dry. Then crack two eggs in a bowl and add the spinach. You can also add some feta cheese as well if you like. Then heat up some olive oil in a pan (about 1-2 tbsp, just so the omelet doesn't stick) and add your egg mixture. Cook for about 3 minutes or until you can easily flip the omelet. Cook for an additional 30 seconds to 1 minute or until omelet is not runny. Serve with toasted whole-grain bread and you have a healthy delicious meal!

You can also make an easy vegetable sandwich with hummus. Just get some whole-grain pita bread, spread your favorite hummus inside, add some crumbled feta cheese, some sliced olives, cucumber, and tomato, and some romaine lettuce and you're done. This sandwich is the best to make when your in a hurry and don't have time to cook up a lunch.

For beans, you can buy a can of black beans and make a tex-mex (Mexican-inspired) salad. Just mix a 1/2 cup rinsed and drained canned black beans with chopped romaine lettuce, shredded cheddar cheese, chopped avocado, tomatoes, cucumber, red bell pepper, cooked corn kernels, and drizzle with lime-cilantro salad dressing (look for it in your grocery store or use this recipe: http://www.recipesource.com/side-dishes/dressings/00/rec0099.html). Toss to combine. Add some corn tortilla chips to it if you don't mind the extra fat and calories. =)

Hope this helped!

Yummy healthy lunches?

Emily J

Here's the deal, I brown bag it for lunch at school. haha.

I'm a vegetarian and generally I eat a PB and J sandwich on whole wheat bread, some sort of fruit, and either some nuts or something of that maner.

Any ideas on how I can spice it up? I'm just trying to eat healthier and would like some ideas!

I'm vegetarian BTW and I don't have access to the microwave.

Answer
Delicious Vegetarian Panini Sandwich Filling Recipe Ideas
Provolone cheese, fontina cheese, sun-dried tomatoes, artichoke hearts, pre-sautéed red onion and mushroom, fresh basil and chopped olives.
Havarti cheese (terrific in paninis), mozzarella cheese, artichoke hearts, fresh tomatoes, and pesto spread.
Havarti-dill cheese, sliced onions, sliced tomatoes, sliced zucchini. If desired, try a sauce made with mayo, horseradish & mustard of choice. (Perhaps on Sourdough bread)
Sliced firm tofu, sliced, zucchini slices, red bell pepper slices, Swiss cheese, fresh spinach or basil leaves. Use a hearty panini bread that can stand up to the moisture in the tofu.
Plain hummus, baby spinach, grilled mushrooms, tomatoes, chopped onions, shredded aged cheddar cheese.
Whole-wheat pita pocket, vegetarian refried beans, sliced roasted red pepper, sliced olives, mild salsa, sliced cheddar cheese. Mexican flavor!
Sourdough bread, sliced zucchini, sliced yellow squash, sliced red bell pepper, provolone cheese, fresh basil leaves, mayonnaise. Drizzle of Italian dressing.
Spread pesto sauce inside of a baguette. Add mozzarella cheese. Super easy and fast!
Gorgonzola cheese, provolone cheese, sliced black olives, sliced green peppers, diced onion, fresh basil and Dijon mustard & mayonnaise spread.
Whole-wheat pita pocket, shredded mozzarella cheese, tomato slices, and mashed or sliced avocado.
Mozzarella cheese, cheddar cheese, sliced black olives, sliced green peppers, and pre-sautéed mushrooms.
Sautéed sliced onions (golden and slightly). Sautéed sliced mushrooms. Fill a pita with jack cheese, onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, and mozzarella cheese.
For a great, fast breakfast (or lunch or dinner), fill panini with scrambled eggs and cheese. Add veggies, mild green chilies, salsa, or condiments of choice.
Mozzarella cheese, pizza sauce, sliced black olives, sliced green peppers, and pre-sautéed mushrooms (or pizza filling of choice â even pineapple).

Healthy caming recipes?

Erica

Im looking for recipes to use when camping and using a fire pit or table top grill. I need ones that are somewhat healthy thanks.

Answer
1. Pancakes: Mix up whole-wheat pancake mix before you leave, using dried egg and dried buttermilk, so all youâll need to add at the campsite is water. The wheat fiber will keep you full and energized for an active day of hiking, biking, boating and late-night campfire conversation.

2. Hearty oatmeal: Try my yummy make-ahead recipe (below). Itâs less sugary than packaged instant oatmeal.

3. Trail mix: Make your own trail mix with an assortment from the bulk foods aisle of your supermarket, including nuts, dried fruits, seeds, and carob or chocolate chips. The trail mix can double as a sprinkle on oatmeal.

4. Tuna melts: Make tuna melts on crackers or toasted bread with tuna from a pouch and slices of individually wrapped cheese on top. Heat on grill until cheese melts.

5. Grilled-cheese sandwiches or panini: Toast them over the hot fire.

6. Veggie dogs or turkey dogs: Theyâre better for you than regular hot dogs.

7. Veggie ramen: Combine ramen noodles and chopped fresh vegetables (or freeze-dried ones) and low-sodium hot broth made from a powder or liquid concentrate. (If you use the flavoring packets that come with the ramen noodles, only add in about half the packet to cut back on sodium. I promise, itâll still be plenty flavorful!)

8. Rice pilaf or couscous: Prepare according to package directions; combine with your choice of fresh vegetables, mushrooms, dried fruit and nuts.

9. Kebobs: Thread pieces of mushrooms, green pepper, cherry tomatoes, fresh fruit, extra-firm tofu or seitan, chicken or beef onto metal or wooden skewers. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and/or brush with a marinade. Cook over an open fire until the vegetables soften and meat is cooked through.

10. Potatoes: Before leaving for your trip, cook whole potatoes in the oven or microwave until theyâre just tender when pierced with a fork; pack whole. Prepare at campsite as stuffed potatoes (cut slits in the potatoes and stuff with cheese and shredded beef jerky) or cut up potatoes and sauté in butter or a little oil to serve with breakfast.

11. Hobo stew: On a large piece of aluminum foil sprayed with cooking spray or brushed with oil, arrange small chunks of meat, if desired, assorted fresh vegetables, onions, and fresh garlic or garlic powder. Top with a pat of butter. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and gather up sides of aluminum foil to make a sealed pouch, allowing some room at the top for steam. Cook in the coals for about 10 minutes.

12. Chili: Make chili in a camp oven with cans of beans, tomatoes and corn, seasoned with powdered chili spice. Bring cornbread mix to make in a cast iron skillet, or make it at home.

13. Grilled fish: Packed in ice for the first night, salmon or tilapia will make a luscious dinner cooked over the fire. Try my easy yet fabulous recipe (below) for Foil-Wrapped Trout with Arugula and Onions.

14. Grilled fruit: Grilling really brings out the flavor of stone fruits, for a satisfyingly sweet finish. Halve peaches, plums or other stone fruit and remove the pit. Grill cut side down until the fruit begins to brown and soften, then turn over and grill a few minutes on the other side, sprinkling with brown sugar if desired.

15. Baked apples: Core apples, fill with brown sugar and raisins and top with a pat of butter. Wrap in aluminum foil, set in coals and bake for about 15 to 20 minutes.

Chicken quesadillas are so easy and fast to make!
Here's my super lazy recipe:
1 can of chicken meat...yes...i said can; weird i know but it makes life so much easier
1 package of Shredded cheese (i use a combo of Mexican mix and Mozerella)
Flour tortillas
butter/margrine
salsa
If you want add some refried beans

ok, you drain the chicken and heat it up in a pot with the cheese and salsa...by the way only put as much cheese and salsa to suit your taste...beans too if you want but if you put too much itll taste like a bean burrito

when all the cheese melts and everything forms a gooey mess in the pot, spread a scoop of the mixture inbetween 2 flour tortillas, Like a sandwich! (keep that in mind when you buy the tortillas, 2 for each quesedilla so a pack of 8 will give you only 4 quesadillas)

let some butter melt onto a skillet or frying pan and heat the tortillas up...as if you were making a grilled cheese sandwich.

and youre done! server with salsa and sour cream if you want

its freaking easy and yummy

PS- when you use up all the filling, fill the pot up with water asap! so that you dont have a hard time cleaning it. otherwise the cheese will stick.

I hope you like it.

I wanted to know how to make things healthy with some unhealthy things, is there a way to do that?

Answer
It depends on what ingredients are in there. Sometimes it even depends on how many calories are in the food/drink. For example, say you had a taco at Taco Bell and you admitted it was unhealthy, how would you change up your recipe of the taco your way? Well, for a start, you can add some tomatoes and chopped lettuce into the taco to make it yummy and healthy. I didn't think that example made sense with the question so let me try this example. If you had a sandwich that had burger meat, mayonnaise, mustard, and pickles, you would probably notice that it's unhealthy. Here is where the magic begins. You should probably scrape off part of the mayonnaise and mustard you have on the sandwich because less mustard and mayonnaise, the more healthy it gets, but it's still yummy though. You should cut the sandwich in half so you can have half of how much calories there are in the whole sandwich you are eating. This is how I believe it worked for me when I was a 13 year old.

What are some simple, yummy, healthy recipes?

Q. I am looking for some easy, healthy, yummy recipes. Short preparation and cook time preferred. Please keep in mind that I'm a college student that works part time and I cannot spend tons of money either. Also, I do not eat chicken or pork. I prefer to eat seafood most of the time as it is lean and healthy. I eat beef very rarely because I prefer it over iron tablets. Thanks! :)

A. Stir fry - Put a bunch of vegetables in the wok with a touch of oil, serve over short grain brown rice.

Soup - Boil vegetables, throw in some noodles, drop in a raw egg or some cooked beans, how about a few shrimp.

Tortillas, beans & cheese. Slice in some tomatoe and avocado.

Sandwiches - Get nice crusty bread, good cheeses, fresh tomatoes, grilled vegetables, tuna fish. Also smoked fish on bagels.

Pilaf - Rice with herbs & seasonings, mix in toasted nuts & seeds, stir in some minced broccoli, carrot or cauliflower, cook using broth for more flavor, add fresh melon on top

Get some good Indian, Chinese and South Asian cookbooks!

how to make a healthy sandwich wrap?
Q. im on a diet. my goal is to lose weight, but i also don't mind staying the same weight.
the other day i had two yummy sandwich wraps, but from the grocery store. it had the white cheese, i think a little bit of mayo, lettuce, and meat (ham)
is that healthy, or too fattening?

i figured the mayo and cheese would make it unhealthy, so is there anyone who knows how to make a healthy sandwich wrap?

A. I'm at work right now, so I don't have the recipe on hand, but if you go check out this month's Better Homes and Gardens they have an awesome recipe for a BLT like wrap.. it only has like 275 calories in the entire thing and its GREAT!

Can you use wax paper instead of parchment?
Q. There's a few yummy sounding healthy recipes I want to try. They call for wrapping things in parchment paper. I live in Alaska so that is very expensive. Can I use old-fashioned wax paper instead? What's the difference in cooking with parchment instead of wax paper?

A. You can't use wax paper in the oven, it'll melt.

The main difference between waxed paper and parchment paper is their respective coatings. Parchment paper is coated with silicone to give it a nonstick, heat-resistant surface, whereas waxed paper is coated with a wax such as soybean or paraffin.

Waxed paper is not meant for use in the oven—the wax coating on it will melt if the paper is exposed to direct heat—so use it for wrapping up sandwiches or food for cold storage. Parchment paper is the best choice for cooking, as most brands can withstand temperatures up to about 420 degrees Fahrenheit (double-check your package to be safe). Parchment paper is good for lining cookie sheets to eliminate the need to grease them, and is also used to cook “en papillote,” a technique of wrapping food in a packet and baking it.

The other way the papers differ is in how they’re processed before being coated. Pat Schweitzer, a spokesperson for Reynolds Consumer Products, says that the company’s parchment paper is pressed into a sheet, then dipped into an acid bath, washed, and “passed over a series of hot rotating drums that realign the fibers and give the paper its strength,” before the silicone coating is applied. Reynolds’ waxed paper, on the other hand, undergoes a process called super calendering, which compresses the paper to give it its transparency, before it is coated in wax.
