Healthy recipes and snacks?

!

Hi! I'm 15 and I've been feeling insecure about my body at times, and also I am not fond of my current diet. I'd really like to eat healthier so I feel better about myself, but I don't know how and what to buy. I live in Canada so we don't have all the cool healthy food stores like in the US, but my parents buy organic anyways. What foods should I be buying and does anyone know recipes I can make for breakfast, lunches, snacks and drinks? I'm not a big fan of spinach or seafood, so anything but those 2 things I'll probably eat :) I loooove carbs and juices, so if anyone has any good substitutions for white bread and pastas and juices that would be great! Thanks!

Answer
First I'd recommend switching from white bread to wheat bread. That save a lot of extra sugar that you don't need and to be completely honest, I think it adds more flavor to toast or a sandwich. Also, switch to wheat pasta. It is not bad at all if cooked correctly. Switching ground beef for ground Turkey may also help lower the fat you're taking in. Buy lots if veggies and fruits. I know you don't like spinach and I don't as well but it is great raw especially on sandwiches, wraps and salads. Another thing you may like is smoothies. Buy all of your favorite fruits, some low-fat milk, yogurt and honey (to substitute for white sugar) and make as many combinations as you want. I currently like peaches & strawberries. Sometimes I'll even add a banana. Chicken is great! It's so versatile! You can do anything with it! Try baking it, grilling it, sautee it. Just don't fry! Get beans and lentils as well. They're great because they have no fat, they're filling and they can be prepared so many ways! And get lots and lots of seasoning! Everything you can find, try it! You want your food to have flavor!

Here's a website with healthy recipes I think you might like:

Good luck!

Healthy, yummy school lunch?

fjalks;jdf

I'm looking for some ideas for lunches that i can pack and bring to school. (i'm in high school)
I'm looking for healthy options that taste good! And also, i'm tired of sandwiches.
We're allowed to use the microwave so it doesn't have to be a cold recipe.
Thank you!!

Answer
organic food products are really good for lunches. You could try a lowfat yoplait strawberry bannana although they come in all different flavors i find them the yummiest and healthiest. so something likea yogurt with fruits and vegetables such as (raspberries, blueberries, some celery etc.) if your trying to loose belly fat or weight you probably want to increase your intake in of all sorts of berries cause they help reduce belly fat. so to put together a really healthy lunch you can have a yogurt a nutrigrain bar a poland spring water and maybe even a fruitcup that you made yourself

Healthy sandwich bread recipe?

Alyssa D

I need a HEALTHY quick bread recipe that i could use for sandwiches. This means i don't need too much flavor since the things i put on it to make the sandwich will add flavor. By healthy i mean no butter (or butter substitute), no sugar (or splenda), and no oil (besides a minimal amount of light tasting extra virgin olive oil). i want it to use baking soda or powder instead of yeast and i only want it to make one loaf. I currently have -
all purpose flour
whole wheat flour
extra virgin olive oil
1% milk
vanilla yogurt
eggs
honey
rolled oats
and many spices

Answer
Why do you think butter, splenda, butter substitutes, yeast, and oil are unhealthy? Do you research or just follow a silly crowd.
If you use the ingredients you want you will get a horrible product.
You might as well put your organic tuna on cardboard and eat it.
My advise to you is to make a nice bread and enjoy life.

Good simple healthy recipes?

zyllee

Any ideas for some tasty healthy recipes that won't leave me in the kitchen forever and won't cause me to have to buy super expensive ingredients I'll only use once?

Please only include ones you have personally tried. My husband and I are trying to choose healthier fare. However, I was raised cooking southern comfort food so my list for healthy things to cook is kind of limited to salads, roast, and oatmeal (blech I know).

Thanks!
I work long hours and have a long commute and don't always want to spend a lot of time in the kitchen.

Answer
Here are some simple and healthy recipe ideas =)

~ Spinach & cheese omelet (eggs, baby spinach, cheese of your choice) served with a salad or veggies + some healthy multigrain toast if you'd like.
- For salad try using mixed baby greens, cherry tomatoes, cucumber & low-fat salad dressing. You can also add things like nuts, goat cheese or feta cheese crumbles, and dried cranberries. Try using organic ingredients if you can.

~ Vegan chili =) It's an easy, great recipe. It serves 6 - 8 people.
- 1 tbsp safflower or olive oil
- 1 large sweet onion, chopped
- 1 jar mild salsa
- 1 jar fire-roasted tomato sauce
- 1 can red kidney beans
- 1 package Yves veggie ground round
* Add oil & onion, cook on medium heat until the onion appears to be clear colored.
* Add sauce, salsa, beans - cook
* Add ground round & cook for at least 15 - 20 minutes.
- Serve with corn bread, multigrain bread, wild/brown rice or a whole grain tortilla + salad or veggies.

* Roasted salmon, sweet potato or wild/brown rice + steamed veggies or salad.
Roasted salmon recipe - http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/healthy-recipes/RE00145
Maple-glazed roasted salmon - http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/healthy-recipes/NU00431
For the sweet potatoes - to cook them just brush them with olive oil, sprinkle them with salt, peppers & basil and bake.

* Smoked salmon & cream cheese bagels with a side salad.

* Mozzarella, pesto & tomato sandwich (you can try using goat cheese to) + salad
- Toast the bread, spread with pesto, add mozzarella & tomato slices.
- You can also try spreading the bread with pesto, adding cheese & tomato and putting it inside a sandwich press or waffle maker to heat up.

* Grilled vegetable & goat cheese wraps or whole wheat pitas filled with hummus & veggies & a salad.

* Whole grain pasta with tomato sauce & steamed baby spinach with goat cheese mixed into sauce. Served with a salad or steamed vegetables.

* Pasta salad with tuna or chickpeas. (whole grain or brown rice pasta, cherry tomatoes, red onion, cheese if you want, cucumber, peppers chopped, etc..with low-fat salad dressing) Served with salad or vegetables.

Hope this helps! :)

Healthy yet tasty recipes?

tata

anyone knows any healthy yet tasty recipes?
the catch is it -- it has to be fastly prepared

and yes i know there are options for sandwiches and salads... but anyone knows anything a bit more fancy and healthy at the same time?

after all eating the same stuff everyday kind of gets boring LOL hahhahaa

thank you all =)

Answer
HEALTHY (AND DELICIOUS!) PIZZA: Get a Boboli WHOLE WHEAT crust, spread with seasoned (garlic, oregano, basil) tomato sauce or jar spaghetti sauce, sprinkle VEGGIE SHREDS made by Galazy Foods, in your organic foods section (cheese-like shreds made from soybeans; tastes JUST LIKE CHEESE when melted!) and top with your favorite VEGGIES (peppers, mushrooms, onions, whatever you like-just no meat!). Takes only about FIVE MINUTES to prepare and less than 10 minutes to cook, and tastes as good as pizzeria pizza (as long as you've remembered the garlic and the oregano)!

Healthy meal recipes?

Jordan

I'm just trying to eat healthier and I need some simple ideas for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I always look on the internet and find all these complicated ingredients that I don't have. Just want to use stuff I always have at home. At home i usually have available: chicken breast, wheat bread, whole wheat pasta, tomatoes, onions, sometimes bell peppers, Turkey breast(deli style),baby carrots, squash, garlic, sour cream, butter, olive oil, canned tuna, canned tomatoes, a lot of regular spices, oatmeal, canned kidney beans, rice(not the brown kind:() potatoes, thin rice noodles(don't usually have those, just happen to at the moment) couscous(not really regular but we have it) tomato sauce, pasta sauce(red) teriyaki sauce and marinade, soy sauce, and we have really big cans of pinto beans! That's pretty much all I can see right now. It's ok if you have a recipe that maybe has something not on my list. It's jut hard for me to get my parents to buy what I want and the healthy stuff. And there's probably a lot of thing I could make I just hafta find a recipe! Also healthy snack ideas?

Answer
Breakfast:
-Oatmeal
-Breakfast parfait (you can look up recipes on google. You will get TONS of results)
-Apple or banana with almond butter or natural organic peanut butter
-High fiber cereal (no more than 7grams sugar per serving) with fruit
-Whole wheat toast with almond butter or natural organic peanut butter. Sliced banana or apple on top

Lunch:
-Chicken salad
-Chicken sandwich
-Tuna salad
-Tuna sandwich
-Turkey sandwich
-Pinto beans on toast
-Whole wheat pasta or rice noodles with tomato sauce
-Oatmeal
-Pinto bean sandwich
-Veggie sandwich (with squash tomatoes bell peppers lettuce and whatever dressing/seasoning you want)

Dinner:
-Chicken salad
-Chicken sandwich
-Tuna salad
-Tuna sandwich
-Turkey sandwich
-While wheat pasta or rice noodles with tomato sauce or lemon juice or something
-Pinto beans on toast
-Pinto bean sandwich
-Fish (I think salmon is the best)

Snacks:
-Fruit
-Nuts
-Low/non fat yogurt
-Veggies (Celery with almond/peanut butter is great!)

I like putting olive oil on my salads and sandwiches..but I'm kinda strange ;P
You can also replace the pinto beans with kidney beans I think. I'm not really sure if they're healthy or not though.
I like putting organic peanut butter or almond butter and cinnamon in my oatmeal. Adds good flavor.

Good luck!! (Sorry I didn't really give you any recipes)

What are some healthy, easy meals\snacks for breakfast, lunch and dinner that I can make at home?
10 points for the most ideas for all the meals\snacks!

Answer
Breakfast:

- Egg whites (better for you than the whole egg) with a little salt and pepper, maybe some cheese to add flavor, on wheat toast.
- Grapefruit (it's sooo healthy for you, it can be a snack too)
- Cottage Cheese Pancakes: http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/recipes/351
- Oatmeal
- All fruit smoothie. Have non frozen fruit and add ice or use frozen fruit and add a little 100% fruit juice. You can make it a *healthy* milk shake by using low fat milk instead of juice and adding a little sugar (sugar isn't unhealthy in small amounts, but fake sugar like sweet and low and equal are bad for you)

Lunch/Dinner:

- Chicken breast with lemon pepper or other seasonings
- A spinach tortilla with chicken cooked in some bbq sauce. Add lots of lettuce and a little bit of light ranch (like a teaspoon, if even that).
- Salad- there are thousands of possible salads you can make but what I love doing is a bunch of lettuce, some spinach if you like that, salt, pepper, garlic (powder and only a small amount) and vegetables like tomatoes, cucumbers, or even carrots and peppers
- Taco Salad: brown some lean beef, drain any fat, add seasonings (McCormick has a taco seasoning packet for 50 cents). Make a bowl full of lettuce, tomatoes if you want, some beef, some cheese if you want, and tortilla chips if you want (less healthy version).
- Chicken in a bag- McCormick's has these awesome chicken bag seasonings where you throw chicken in the bag (they provide) with some carrots, potatoes, whatever you want, add the seasoning and bake for about an hour. One of my husbands favorites!
- Costco sells individual salmon fillets. Take one out of the fridge/freezer, season to your liking, throw on a pan, the grill, or in the oven and cook.
- a sandwich- between whole wheat bread slices, pita style, or wrapped up (spinach wraps are really delicious, or whole wheat wraps which I'm not a huge fan of).
- Make some quinoa or brown rice in a rice cooker or in a pot if you don't have one. Add some black beans, salt and pepper, and some mozzarella if it's still to bland. I like to add some sriracha (chili hot sauce) into the rice as it cooks and some garlic seasoning. It adds some kick and makes it taste really good without adding the sodium from cheese.

Snacks:
- peppers
- celery. If you hate it alone add some organic peanut butter (no preservatives) you can even go to many stores and grind your own peanuts into peanut butter.
- peas, green beans, cucumbers, tomatoes, other vegetables but not potatoes or corn.
- apples, pears, bananas, berries, grapefruit, and other fruits.
- some nuts or a homemade trail mix (raisins, peanuts, almonds, some dark chocolate chips, whatever else you want)

Dessert
- a small amount of dark chocolate is actually really good for you. The higher the cocoa content the better :) But only a small amount.

Those are my favorites but check out this site: http://www.lifehack.org/articles/lifehack/over-100-quick-and-easy-healthy-foods.html

for more options. There are an unlimited amount of healthy foods out there you just have to find what you like and stick with it :)

What are healthy dishes I can bring camping to share with a group?

Camp.Bike.

I am going car camping & RVing a few times this summer with family and friends. We always have plenty of tasty and unhealthy food, but and I would like to bring some healthier options. I’m kind of stumped for ideas of food that travels well and is healthy and can be made for a group. I am open to side dishes, snacks, desserts, or any other ideas. What are healthy foods to eat for dinner?

healthy organic sandwich recipes image

heyy =]

I usually eat pretty healthy foods for breakfast and lunch, but when it comes to dinner, my family tends to go for more of the fried foods. Right now, dinner is often a lot of white rice and some fried meat (chicken, steak, etc.) ... :p
What are healthy alternatives that aren't that hard to prepare?

Answer
You could try switching the white rice to brown/wild rice, or trying quinoa instead sometimes. With salmon or grilled tofu. As well as adding vegetables, like broccoli, green beans, carrot, cauliflower, asparagus, zucchini, etc and or a salad. If you can use organic natural ingredients.

Here are some healthy dinner food ideas:

~ Pasta dish with whole grain or brown rice pasta.
For example, with tomato sauce or basil pesto sauce, baby spinach, goat cheese or shredded cheese. Or a pasta salad with baby spinach or grilled vegetables, goat or mozzarella cheese, chopped cherry tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, etc.

~ Salad: mixed baby greens, baby romaine, baby spinach, Italian salad mix, romaine lettuce, etc. with things like cherry tomatoes/tomato, cucumber, low-fat salad dressing or olive oil/vinegar, red onion, dried cranberries, goat or feta crumbles, walnut crumbles or almond slithers, grated carrot, etc.

~ Vegetables - steamed, grilled, etc. You can also try adding a drizzle of olive oil on them, balsamic vinaigrette dressing, lemon - for more flavor.

~ Salmon + wild/brown rice or sweet potato or potato or quinoa + veggies and/or salad.
- For the potato you could make oven fries with olive oil & a sprinkle of salt, basil. To make healthy creamy mashed potatoes try goat cheese added in and for sweet potatoes mashed with cinnamon.

~ Omelets with baby spinach & cheese.

~ Sandwiches.
(On whole grain bread like multigrain, ezekiel, rye, whole wheat pita, whole grain tortilla, etc.)
- Smoked salmon & cream cheese
- Pesto, tomato, baby spinach & mozzarella melt
- Falafel & hummus
- Almond or Peanut butter & jam - nut butter with no added sugar
- Egg & cheese, egg white & spinach in a whole grain tortilla, with cheese like 1-2 tbsp goat cheese
- Chickpea wrap (with things like grated carrot, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, mixed baby greens, salad dressing, etc.)
- Black bean wrap with salsa & some cheese; or a quesadilla on a whole grain tortilla
- Veggie burger
- Hummus, lettuce, grated carrot, sliced cherry tomatoes in a whole wheat pita half

~ Vegetables like broccoli, carrot, yellow & green zucchini, mushrooms, red onion stir fried in olive oil with tofu, served with wild/brown rice of whole grain noodles.

~ Whole wheat pita pizza or multigrain thin crust pizza, with tomato or pesto; baby spinach, mozzarella, grilled vegetables, etc.

What is a good diet for someone trying to stay healthy?

Vickey

I want to go on a diet to be healthy, but I don't want it to have to be too hard. I work out a lot, and am very fit, but I feel that I am not making the healthiest choices when it comes to eating. What should I do when it comes to disciplining my food choices?

Answer
Thats great that your active and want to eat healthy :)
Go for natural, organic foods. Eat smaller portions more often rather than big portions less often. Avoid things like soda, diet soda or any diet drinks, artificial colors or sweeteners, too much sugar, overly processed foods. Remember to drink plenty of water. Green tea is great to =) As well as water with lemon which is cleansing, good for your skin, digestive system.

You can also try out healthier alternatives with food.
Examples:

- Replace fast food french fries with homemade sweet potato or regular fries (made with a touch of olive oil, salt)

- For chips, you could try natural sweet potato chips, pita chips, fat free popcorn, pop chips or a natural potato chip brand like Kettle. You can also make your own chips by thinly slicing potatoes or sweet potatoes, glazing with olive oil, sprinkling with salt (pepper, basil if you'd like - cinnamon goes well with sweet potatoes) & baking them.

- Replace candy with things like frozen grapes or banana slices, dried mango strips, dried blueberries/cranberries/cherries/papaya, raisins, etc.

- Try a veggie burger on a whole wheat bun, topped with some things you like.

- If you want soda, try cold sparkling water with lemon or mixed with 100 % organic fruit juice instead

- Replace white pasta with whole grain in pasta dishes + add veggies (for example adding baby spinach to pasta, grilled vegetables to lasagna, broccoli/grated carrot/spinach/kale to pasta salad, etc.

- For a creamy pasta sauce try tomato sauce with goat cheese mixed in, for a healthier dish

- Enjoy pizza, try it on thin multigrain crust topped with fresh veggies.

- For healthier treat options try things like: frozen yogurt, vanilla greek yogurt with berries & grated dark chocolate, whole grain baked goods, etc. Desserts are fine in moderation :)

Here is a list with some healthy food ideas :)

~ Greek yogurt or yogurt (nonfat) - Greek yogurt has more protein than regular yogurt
~ Eggs, cheese, cottage cheese (2% is fine), goat cheese, skim milk or goat milk, etc.

~ Veggie burgers (Amy's makes great veggie burgers)
~ Whole grain breads: multigrain bread, ezekiel bread, rye bread, whole wheat pitas, whole grain tortillas or bagels, etc.
~ Whole grain pasta or brown rice pasta, brown/wild rice, quinoa, buckwheat, etc.
~ Sweet potatoes or potatoes

We will have limited refrigeration capabilities. Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Thanks!
