Healthy high school lunch???help!?

Kitty

I'm looking for high school lunches ideas and combo(snacks,water,meals/sandwich ideas). I'm a freshman this year and our school lunches suck. I want to go healthy this year too.)

Answer
Bring a sandwich on whole-wheat bread, or a wrap in whole-wheat tortillas. Fill with crisp lettuce, veggies, lean meat. You might need something to stop the bread from getting soggy or add some flavour to the wrap -make sure it's low-fat.
Definitely bring a thermal lunchbox/bag, so that you can bring a wider variety of items without worry that it won't stay cold enough. Try bringing a yogurt-cup (healthy yogurt, not full-fat), some veggies and dip, and some home-baked goods like muffins or banana bread (make sure you use healthy recipes), try wrapping & freezing individually so you can grab one portion to take with you (it'll be thawed by lunch).
You could also bring a tupperware container full of salad, or a cold pasta salad (or if you have access to a microwave, one that's meant to be served hot, just reheat it) with lots of vegetables mixed in, or a thermos full of hearty (but healthy) soup.

Healthy recipes for picky eaters!?

Brianna

I am getting ready to have gastric bypass (I am a big woman and need the help). My husband and my son (3 years old. Also have a daughter but she is 8 months) are picky eaters. My husband would like to get healthier and we both agree we need to set up our kids need to be taught to be healthy as early as possible. What are some healthy recipes for my picky eaters? No onions, peppers, or mushrooms please.

Answer
Oh hell, they don't seem so picky. Just no onion, peppers or mushroom. My kids ate what I put in front of them and liked it all. Just don't let them get away with saying they don't like something until they've at least tried one bite of it. If it really repulses them, then ya know that's out for them.

Grilled Lemon Herbed Chicken, grilled zucchini, garlic toast.
Greek Chicken and Potatoes with Greek Salad
Antipasto Salad and Crostini
Greens with Albacore salad atop.
Fresh sauted Spinach in garlic olive oil with a pinch of nutmeg, sprinkled with fresh lemon juice once cooked. Top with Seared Sea Scallops.
Lentil Soup
Chicken and Rice soup
Dijon, lemon juice and rosemary marinated lean pork chops on the grill, grilled veg kabobs, side salad.
Grilled lean steaks, small baked potatoes, bed of greens with slices of pears, topped with sunflower seeds, dried cranberries, gorgonzola and a homemade raspberry vinaigrette.
Lemon Glazed Ham steak (cut fat out first), potatoes galette, candied brussel sprouts.
Beef, Barley and veg stew with biscuits made with sugar free almond milk.
Deli sandwiches are good. Just use whole grain bread. I never had the opportunity to try white bread until sometime in the 70's when I was a teen. We ate healthy. Daddy was a farmer.
Puerto Rican Pork Stew (so good and full of veg's)
Shish ka bobs with any assortment of meat and veg's, herbed garlic toast.
Pasta, Asparagus and various veg salad with fresh basil, lemon and dijon vinaigrette.
Herbed baked Barrimundi served over spinach salad. Maybe top it with your favorite chimmichurra sauce. There are so many to choose from.
Stir fried vegs and protein of your choice over brown rice or whole wheat pasta.
Egg Drop Soup with Chinese Pea Pods in it. Really good.
Fresh fruit salad with fresh mint. No sugar. Pineapple is quite sweet as it is.

Anyway Hon, there's a lot you can do. Just have to limit the carbs a bit, and try to use olive oil whenever possible. Like when you make garlic toast, use half butter, half olive oil. When you need a bit of oil to toss oven fries or veg's in, use olive oil. Use olive oil to saute vegs, make vinaigrettes. It's GMO free and naturally good for you. I wish you and the family the best. Maybe ya'll could take a short walk with a frisbee after dinner. I can't do a frisbee to save my life, but perhaps you'll be busy chasing it like I would.
Best to ya.

Is this sandwich recipe healthy?

Val

I'm just going to have it once or maybe twice a week.
I'm just asking.

I'll use whole wheat bread, boiled chicken, one tablespoon mayonnaise, raw tomatoes, cucumber and a little bit of mustard.
Also, if necessary, one low-fat cheese slice and a little bit of ketchup >w<

Answer
Cheese and mayo will be the most caloric thing on the sandwich. But we certainly need fat in our diet. In terms of being healthy the sandwich you describe is pretty healthy. It's low fat, high protein, good amount of fiber, low carbs. Good balance. Try grilling or baking the chicken for a little more flavor.

Best sandwich recipes!!!?

I am looking for the best sandwich recipes that the people of this website have to offer. And if you want to know my reason it is just because I wanted to taste something... different. And also I only want serious awnsers !!!

Answer
West Coast Sandwich
Layered between slices of whole-grain bread, creamy avocados, fresh sprouts, and a snappy goat-cheese spread add color and character to our vegetarian Healthy Californian.

East Coast Sandwich
Two on toast: Our Pilgrim Sandwich (left), sometimes called the Miles Standish, assembles the flavors we've come to associate with Thanksgiving Dinner between slices of pumpernickel bread. Watch turkey leftovers disappear when combined with Fresh Cranberry Compote and sage-flavored cream cheese. Thought to have originated in the club cars of American passenger trains, the Clubhouse Sandwich (right)--best known simply as the "Club"--stacks three tiers of toasted white bread with classic chicken salad, crisp bacon, crunchy lettuce, and juicy tomato.

Kentucky Sandwich
The Louisville Hot Brown was first served at the Brown Hotel, in Louisville, Ky., in the 1930s. Crumbled bacon and a white Cheddar sauce top off this open-face sandwich, which is layered with sliced turkey and tomato.

Is this a healthy sandwich recipe ?

Nick

White bread (the one you use for toast ) processed cheese ,sliced jam tomato Lettuce mayo honey-mustard salt and pepper ??

Answer
Not exactly. Processed anything really messes with a persons system.

If you HAVE to eat bread, go for the least processed. Make it yourself. Just because it's "Heart Healthy" that doesn't mean anything.

I just found this out a few days ago, but grains have no real nutritional value. At all. As in our bodies don't need it because we can't really process it correctly. Back in the day, people ate bread during famine and hard times. It was meant to be eaten as a last resort when you had to have carbs because you had nothing else.

Just food for thought...

Five minute healthy meals?

Angela

I am trying to compile healthy recipes for my mother for Christmas. One problem she has with eating healthy is she feels it takes too long (not saying I agree with her). She has health problems which have definitely been worsened by her diet. I really love her and have been trying to get her to eat healthy for years.

Another thing I am going to include is a list of foods that I can cook before she gets home, so that she doesn't have to worry about time.

She wants to eat healthy, but she just doesn't know how.

Does anyone have any ideas on fast meals that are also healthy? Some ideas I had were tuna sandwiches, soup, canned vegetables, baked potatoes, tacos, mashed potatoes, and fruit salad. I also included snacks, such as yogurt, bananas, apples, and carrots.

If anyone has any ideas or knows where I could find some recipes, I would be very happy to know.
Thanks, foodieNY, those are wonderful ideas :).
Human:
Are you saying salad, tuna sandwiches, baked potatoes, soup, and canned vegetables cannot make healthy meals?
Are you also saying that those three-minute, processed "diet" meals are actually healthy?
Kiwi:
Yes, I realize that preparation is very important to making foods healthy. I am thinking of also including some tips on how to make them healthier.

---

To be honest, even if she eats these foods in the less-healthy way, it would be better than the stuff she eats now.
And no, I do not mean just "low-fat."
Been There:
Thank you so much. Your answer is very useful.
I forgot about the lost vitamins thing. I think I will write a note about that.

Answer
Tuna sandwiches: are moderately healthy, especially if you use low-fat or non-fat mayonnaise and if you put lettuce on them. Don't eat tuna too often, not more than once a week, because of the high Mercury content.

Soup, if made from scratch is very healthy. If canned, most of the vitamins have been destroyed by the canning process. Same with eating canned vegetables. The healthiest way to eat vegetables is to eat them fresh and raw. Second healthiest is steaming fresh vegetables or cooking up frozen vegetables.

The healthy part of potatoes is the part right up against the outside skin. Most of the rest of the potato is quickly-digested starch. While it has some vitamins in it, the speed with which the starch goes into our bloodstream can be bad for our pancreas. Mashed potatoes, unless cook and mashed WITH the skin left on, are not very healthy at all.

Fruit is good, but canned fruit salad - like vegetables - has lost most of its vitamins.

Tacoes are relatively healthy, especially if packed with lettuce and tomato, and you go easy on the cheese (which is high in fat and salt).

Good 5-minute meals:
1. Microwaved instant oatmeal, with fresh berries and vanilla yogurt.
2. Whole wheat pita, sliced in half and opened into a pocket, stuffed with sliced chicken breast, sliced green pepper, sliced cucumber, sliced lettuce, and just a bit of low-fat Ranch salad dressing. Served with a cup of milk.
3. Scrambled eggs, buttered whole wheat toast, fresh sliced tomato, glass of milk. But don't eat eggs more than twice a week.

Generally, healthy eating should have daily portions of:
1. Protein: chicken, fish, peanut butter.
2. Oils and healthy fats. Cook with olive oil. Margarine. You don't need much of these, but you do need a bit every day. 10 almonds a day provide both oils and some protein. Raw walnuts have Omega 3 in them.
3. Whole grains: Brown bread, brown rice, brown basmati rice
4. Vegetables: raw fruit is the best.
5 Fruit. Not too much, it's high in sugar.
6. Milk and yogurt.

Stirfry is an excellent way to get good nutrition. I add chicken or shrimp for protein, although sometimes I will make a beef stir fry. I add whatever veggies I have on hand: broccoli, cauliflower, green pepper, carrot, celery, bok choy, cabbage, bean sprouts, garlic, onion, zucchini, mushrooms. And I serve it over brown rice. Sometimes I cook up rice noodles instead. Or both rice and rice noodles.

Your mother is an adult.
She needs to do what she needs to do .. this is how adults behave.
If she needs to eat properly, and if that takes more than 5 minutes to prepare, then she needs to take more than 5 minutes to make her meals.
This is not optional.
If she cannot or will not take care of herself, then she can no longer remain within her home and will have to go into assisted living.
The choice is hers.

Answer
Mini pizzas are always fun, made with whole wheat or whole grain english muffins, pizza sauce, reduced-fat cheese, and topped with lots of yummy veggies!

Or, cut up veggies or fruits in fun shapes like stars or hearts, or use cookie cutters for sandwichs for a fun snack.

All finger food is good like gerber flavored puffs, any kind of cereal like cheerios or kix. I would go for cheerios, they now come in whole grain (:

Hope that helps!

I need some easy food recipes for children 5 and under?

Karah Hend

My children are real picky eaters. Most of the time I cook something half of it always ends up in the trash, then I resort to little snacks which is unhealthy for them, and then I worry that they are not eating enough. I need a quick and easy and preferably healthy meal that children 5 and under will eat up. Thank you :)

Answer
Could it be that your kids are refusing to eat becasuse they know that if they don't eat dinner, Mommy will give them the junk instead? My daughter is two weeks into her sixth year and my son is less than two months from turning three. They both try that. They both know that if they refuse to eat for the sake of refusing to eat, they don't get a bedtime snack (which is usually a small treat, i.e., a cookie, a small Girl Scout bar [which we bought up while they had them], etc. The pure junk.) If they do want something before bed, it's bread with something (whole wheat bread with SmartBalance spread, peanut butter, etc.) or fruit or leftover vegetable from dinner.

We live with my husband's parents, and his younger sister. My husband and is parents are not veg*n, my sister-in-law is vegetarian (but eats a lot of junk "food"), my daughter is a "flexitarian" (i.e., she could have tofu or a veggie deli "meat" sandwich for lunch, and have meat with dinner), and my son and I are vegan. Even though three different meals are often made (except on Fridays; My FIL is member of Catholic Church and does not eat any meat but fish on Fridays, regardless of the liturgical season), then it's all veg*n or leftovers. Even with all of that, we are nto short order cooks. We cook what we think everybody will like and if they don't, then they don't eat.

There are exceptions, though. Monday of this week my husband took his brother to the nearest cancer hospital for his treatments. He wasn't sure when he would be home and we didn't think about story hour at the library that evening. We had dinner after we got home and the kids were tired. My daughter smartly refused the Kraft macaroni and cheese my MIL made and wanted the tomatoes, lettuce and whole wheat bread from the BLTs that were also available. I didn't have a problem with that and was quite happy with her choices. My MIL made macaroni and cheese for my two-year-old and me-- whole wheat pasta with rice milk cheese and a bit of soy milk and Smart Balance spread. He at half of his bowl with struggle. It was late and he was tired and I think he decided that he didn't have to eat if his older sister (who was also fighting) didn't have to. Ugh. Most nights, it's easy, but my son still thinks that he can run around and eat at the same time-- a habit I have tried to discourage, but my husband and his mother are cool with. (My husband thinks it's okay for our son to sit and eat if my husband is feeding him. I help my son when it's difficult to get some of the food out, like the last few bites, but I don't sit and feed him like a baby learning.)

Anyway, quit giving in to your kids. They are smart and seem to know they can manipulate Mommy. On very rare occasions, I let my kids get away with it-- i.e., when I am tired, when they are tired, when we're both quite tired and I just want them to eat something so they sleep better at night with food in them, or when I'm just being nice and letting them get away with it just to think they got the upper hand that time.

I like to add cooked chicken to Zatarain's boxed rice. I especially like to add it to the Jambalaya and Red Beans and Rice. It's a one pot meal.

I also shred it and simmer it with salsa and use it for tacos, burritos, or nachos.

My husband shreds it and then sautes some onions until tender, adds bbq sauce and the chicken. He simmers it until everythig is hot and then makes a sandwich with it.

What are some cheap meals to make at home?

It's one extreme or the other for me, either its a sandwich or something expensive like a roast. I need to learn some decent priced meals that will be good for my family. Whats the cheapest to make recipe you can think of that is healthy? I need to get away from boxed meals.
The recipe I have for mashed potatos takes 45 minutes to cook, are there any less time consuming ways to make mashed potatos?

Answer
our favorite is a baked potato in the Microwave. Then add different cheeses, bacon bits and what ever you like, then back into the microwave for about 30 seconds. Then you chives and sour cream.

Another is grilled cheese and soup.

How can I make canned chicken brest?

Blue Butte

I want to make canned chicken brest at home for make healthy sandwich for my kids. Someone has a good recipe?

Answer
How To Can Chicken Breast. The ingredients here are simple: Chicken and Salt.

Begin by cutting your boneless chicken into chunks then pack them raw into the jars, leaving about 3/4th of an inch headspace

Next add 3/4 tsp of salt to each jar

Wipe the rims with a damp clean rag and then place the lids and rings on the jars. Remember if you are using Tattler lids to back them off 1/4 inch. After you get the lids and rings on then place into your canner with the needed water for a long processing time. You do not want it to boil dry during processing. Use the racks in between levels of jars.

Place the lid onto your canner and then bring it to a boil. You want the steam to vent out of the stem for about 10 minutes. Then place your weight on the canner and set to 15lb (or the recomended pressure for your elevation). Once the canner gets to the correct pressure then time for 75 minutes for pints and 90 minutes for qts.

Once the time is up then slide your canner off the burner to a cool spot. Do not try to rapidly reduce the pressure you can have jar breakage and seal failure. After it is cooled sufficiently to have no pressure left remove the lid carefully (the steam can burn you) Then using a jar lifter remove the jars and place them on a clean dry towel. The jars are very hot at this point and may still be boiling inside the jar. If you are using Tattler lids then now is the time to tighten the rings down. Once again use oven mits as the jars are very hot.

Leave the jars undisturbed until they are fully cooled.

After they have cooled then place a piece of tape on the lid and mark at least the date also the contents if you so desire. Chicken prepared like this is great for many dishes but our favorite is chicken salad for sandwiches.
Chicken Salad

1 jar canned chicken
6 hard boiled eggs
Mayo
Relish
salt/pepper to taste
Chcopped green onions
chopped celery if desired

Place into a bowl the drained chicken broken up, the cut up hard boiled eggs, the chopped onions and celery. Then add relish to taste and Mayo to desired consistency, salt and pepper to taste. Put whatever amount you want on bread or crackers and enjoy. It is beautiful served on a lettuce leaf.

Can anyone help me with healthy dinner ideas?

Paislee's

Me and my boyfriend both need to shed a good amount of Weight, we also want to keep our family healthy. He goes to school three night a week an hour away so I need healthy meal Ideas that he could eat in the car. I also need quick dinner time and lunch meals. My daughter isn't old enough to eat solids yet but we do have his children every weekend so kid friendly recipes are also highly appreciated. Unfortunately me and his oldest are very picky eaters so the wider the meal options the better. I would also appreciate links too.
Thank you!

Answer
I'd check out Allrecipes.com and tasteofhome.com. Fish, chicken, whole grain pasta, and veggies should be the majority of your meals. This rosemary chicken recipe is great on its own and great as leftovers for lunch as a sandwich or wrap. The chicken alfredo can be made with Healthy Request soup and it's a good choice for picky eaters.

Marinated Rosemary Chicken
From Taste of Home

INGREDIENTS
1/3 cup reduced-sodium soy sauce
1/4 cup lemon juice
2 tablespoons olive oil
4 garlic cloves, minced
4 tablespoons minced fresh rosemary or 4 teaspoons dried rosemary, crushed
1 broiler/fryer chicken (3 pounds), cut up and skin removed (sub all chicken breasts)

SERVINGS 6

DIRECTIONS
In a measuring cup, combine the soy sauce, lemon juice, oil, garlic and rosemary. Pour 1/2 cup into a large resealable plastic bag; add chicken. Seal bag and turn to coat; refrigerate for 8 hours or overnight. Cover and refrigerate remaining marinade for basting.

Coat grill rack with nonstick cooking spray before starting the grill. Prepare grill for indirect heat. Drain and discard marinade from chicken.

Place chicken in an ungreased 13-in. x 9-in. x 2-in. microwave-safe dish. Cover loosely and microwave on high for 6 minutes, rotating once.

Immediately grill chicken, covered, over indirect medium heat for 5 minutes. Turn; grill 8-10 minutes longer or until juices run clear, basting occasionally with reserved marinade.

Does anyone have any good recipes for NuWave Oven?

our best healthy sandwich recipes
on Our best healthy sandwich recipes

layzeeej

I have lost my recipe book that it came with and would like some wonderful recipes. Thanks for your help.

Answer
Whole Frozen Turkey (10 pounds)

Buying a frozen turkey and making it in less than 2 1/2 hours is so easy and is an unexpected treat for the whole family.
Unwrap the frozen turkey and rinse in cold water. While still wet, season the outside as desired and place on liner pan or 1" rack breast side down. Nu-Wave on HI for 60 minutes. (At this point, the gizzards inside should be defrosted and you can remove for later use. Season or fill cavity with vegetables at this point). Turn turkey breast side up Nu-Wave on HI for another 75-90 minutes or until thermometer reads 165°F. If the skin is becoming too brown, cover with tin foil just as you would a conventional oven.
Let the bird sit as usual and use drippings from pan to make delicious gravy.
(If you want to make up to a 15 pound bird, see our extender ring.)
See Cooking Chart for more times and temperatures

FROZEN ROAST BEEF (4 pounds)

Buying a roast beef (or 2) on sale and freezing it for later saves time and money. Just take it out and, and under 2 hours, you can have a delightful surprise for the family.
Rinse the beef in cold water so any dry seasonings may adhere. Place roast on 1" rack, top side down. Nu-Wave on HI for 50 minutes. Turn over, top side up, and continue another 50 minutes (RARE) or more depending on your taste. Let sit 15 minutes and enjoy!

See Cooking Chart for more times and power settings.

BAKED FRENCH TOAST (4 servings)

4 1-inch thick slices raisin bread or white bread
4 eggs
1 1/3 cups milk or half and half
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
2 tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup maple syrup
1/4 cup butter or margarine

Cut bread slices in half diagonally. In a shallow dish, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, sugar, and salt. Dip each bread slice in mixture to saturate both sides.
Lightly butter a shallow aluminum pan and arrange slices in a single layer. Place pan on 4" rack and Nu-Wave HI for 8 minutes (or until browned and puffy). Turn 1/2 way if desired.
While toast bakes, combine syrup and butter. Heat until melted together.
Top off and enjoy!

Hint for Low Fat Version:
Dip bread in egg substitute and roll in corn flake crumbs. Follow cooking directions above and top with low-cal syrup or fruit. This is crispy, healthy, and delicious!

BAKED REUBEN SANDWICH

Butter, softened
2 slices rye bread
1 ounce thinly sliced corned beef
1/4 cup sauerkraut, squeezed dry
1 slice Swiss or Gruyere cheese
1 tablespoon thousand island dressing

Lightly butter one side of each slice of bread. On the unbuttered side, place corned beef, sauerkraut, and cheese. Spread with dressing. Top with second slice of bread, buttered side up.
Place directly on 4" rack and Nu-Wave on HI for 7 minutes or until the top is lightly toasted and the cheese is melted.
Place directly on the 4" rack and Nu-Wave on HI for 4 minutes or until well heated and cheese melts.

4 baked potatos
1 cup sour cream
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
1/2 cup chives or scallions, chopped
4 slices cooked bacon

Cut potatoes in half lengthwise and scoop out cooked potato, leaving thick skins. Mix everything except the skins and fill each skin with equal amounts of the mixture. Place on the 4" rack and Nu-Wave on HI for 5 minutes.

CHINESE STYLE RIBS (20 servings)

1 cup soy sauce
3 tablespoons dry red wine
1 tablespoon each sugar, salt, and garlic powder
2 pounds baby back ribs, cut into individual pieces

Mix all the ingredients and marinate the ribs for at least an hour. Spread the ribs on the 4" rack and Nu-Wave on HI for 20 minutes.

LONDON BROIL (4-6 servings)

1 1/2 -2 pound flank steak , 1" thick
salt, pepper, and garlic powder to taste
2 pounds sliced mushrooms
6 tablespoons butter
1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce

Place mushrooms, butter, and Worcestershire sauce on 10" pie plate and set on liner pan. Place the steak on 4" rack. Nu-Wave on HI for 5 minutes. Turn the meat and cook another 5-7 minutes or to desired temperature. Slice the meat at a 45 degree angle against the grain and serve with the mushrooms.
FROZEN - When you find flank steak on sale, buy a few and freeze them for later. (Freeze flat for later use). Spray or rub vegetable oil on frozen steak and sprinkle with seasonings. Nu-Wave for 10 minutes, turn and cook another 15 minutes or to desired temperature.

CORNISH HENS

These tasty birds are almost always available frozen therefore they are perfect to cook in the Nu-Wave Oven and come out crisp on the outside and moist on the inside!
Remove the wrapper and run under water to remove the glaze. Place on the 1" rack, breast side down, and Nu-Wave on HI for 30 minutes. Pry open the cavity, remove the giblets, and season the cavity. Turn over and cook another 20 minutes or to 170°F.

LOW-CAL CHICKEN PARMESAN (4 servings)

1 tablespoon lemon juice
4 lamb chops, 1" thick
4 ounces feta cheese, crumbled
1/4 cup chopped ripe tomatoes

1 tablespoon chopped parsley
salt and pepper to taste

In shallow dish, mix olive oil, garlic and lemon juice. Add the lamb chops and turn to coat on all sides. Place in refrigerator for 15 minutes. In small bowl mix feta, tomatoes, olives, and parsley. Set aside.
Place lamb chops directly on 4" rack, sprinkle with salt and pepper. Nu-Wave on HI until done to taste, approx. 12-14 minutes (turning over 1/2 way)
When chops are done, spoon equal portion of feta mixture on each chop and NU-Wave on HI until cheese melts.

BREADED SOLE OR FLOUNDER (4 servings)

4 sole or flounder filets, about 2 pounds
4 tablespoons melted butter
lemon seasoning to taste
salt
2 cups bread crumbs

Mix the butter, seasonings, and crumbs and press into the fish. Coat both sides of fish and place on 4" rack. Nu-Wave on HI for about 7 minutes.

FRENCH FRIES (4 servings)

Parmesan Fries: Cook as directed above but before serving, toss with 1/2 cup of grated parmesan cheese

1/3 cup flour
1/3 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
1/3 cup quick cooking oatmeal
1/4 cup butter, softened
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Grease an 8" round cake pan. Place sliced apples in the pan. In a medium bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, oatmeal, and softened butter until well mixed. Set aside. In a small dish mix granulated sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle over the apples. Pat the oatmeal mixture on top. Place on the 1" rack and Nu- Wave on #5 (med. heat) for 30 minutes or until apples are tender and juices are bubbly.

My entire family loves meat, but after seeing a video about KFC's slaughter houses I don't think I can ever buy meat again. I knew they where not killed with kindness but I had no idea how bad the animals where treated. I need some really good recipes because my husband is a "meat and potatoes" kind of guy and I need to convince him vegetarian meals are just as good! I am also wondering if cutting out the meat will cut down our grocery bill? We are on a tight budget and if he see's less money going towards the store I think he would be more open minded about the change.

Answer
Learn to cook without meat and make it seem it seem like you did. If you don't have a BBQ, buy one. People associate that smoky flavor with charred flesh, but its really all about the charcoal or wood chips you use. It WILL be cheaper without a doubt if you use bulk TVP and homemade seitan or even grilled extra firm tofu as your main meat replacements instead of pre-made frozen stuff at the store.

I'm vegan and these are some of my favorite things to eat:

Breakfast: bananas, cream of wheat with brown sugar and soy butter, cereal, pancakes or french toast with real maple syrup, vegan "sausage" patties, smoothies.

Snack: BRUSSEL SPROUTS =) no joke

Lunch: vegan "sausage" sandwiches, sandwiches with vegan deli slices(Tofurkey is the only one that's kinda funky), fruit, dinner leftovers, couscous salad, vegan sushi, potato or pasta salad.

Dinner: sloppy joes, "sausage" and gravy with homemade biscuits, Spaghetti and Trader Joe's "meatballs" or TVP, lasagna, Thai pad see ew, pad khi mao(drunkard's noodles), pad prig king, tofu+eggplant with basil sauce, yellow thai curry with tofu or vegan chikn and veggies and jasmine rice, Indian dal with homemade roti or dosai, channa masala, aloo gobi, vegetable or minestrone soup, pizza, STEAMED "PORK" BUNS with potstickers or spring rolls, sweet&sour/orange/lemon chikn, vegan pho or wonton soup, baked tofu, BBQ homemade seitan (tastes like BBQ'd ribs), kabobs

There have been vegan Olympic gold medalists and a vegan woman can create an ENTIRELY NEW,HEALTHY HUMAN BEING INSIDE OF HER. Many of these children stay vegan and grow up to be perfectly healthy adults. So just keep yourself educated about what you eat and don't let anyone tell you that a veg diet is lacking anything essential.

If you want to become a lacto-ovo vegetarian, the transition should be quite simple. Almost all meats have widely available commercial replacements. All that you have to do is replace any flesh in your diet (beef, pork, poultry, seafood) with meat analogs or just leave it out altogether.

You should keep in mind that a journey such as this can be quite short but should just be the beginning of a longer one to a plant-based diet with no animal products. This is because of the reality of factory farming in which animals that are kept alive to produce milk, eggs, etc suffer much more and longer than animals that are raised to a certain weight and then slaughtered.http://www.veganoutreach.org/whyvegan/
http://meat.org
Some people use the word "vegan" in reference to this idea, but be aware that applying that label to yourself should always come with the inclusion of wise activism and advocacy.http://www.veganoutreach.org/advocacy/index.html
Two extremely important examples of this are that you should never speak to someone about vegetarianism/veganism without their consent and genuine interest or as a comment on what they are eating AND your dietary beliefs should never be used as an introduction or explanation of who you are as a person. Veg*ism should be something that comes up AFTER people get to know you and they offer you a situation that makes it confusing to withhold the information/discussion. Also, if you are presented something that you choose not to eat or you are
ordering food/eating together somewhere/picking the best place to eat.

When you you hold off on the subject until it's necessary and then act like it isn't a big deal at all, people are usually surprised and WAY more interested and curious than if you were to bring it up when someone's eating or just using it as a conversation starter.

A responsible vegan ALWAYS studies the subject of their own health and how to keep their body completely provided for in every sense. http://www.veganhealth.org/sh
To neglect their body is to define a plant-based diet as unhealthy and is the opposite of helping the animals.

Just to clear things up, the vegetarian/vegan diet is not composed of salads, vegetables, fruit and fake meat. Fruits and vegetables are always important but they DO NOT make up the largest portion of any healthy diet.
A balanced plant-based diet includes grains(breads, pasta, rice, cereal), legumes(soy, beans, peas, lentils), fruit and vegetables.

Being vegan can be an art, one whose challenge is to take things that involve the suffering of the innocent and change them into something free of cruelty.

A vegan woman can create an ENTIRELY NEW,HEALTHY HUMAN BEING INSIDE OF HER. Many of these children stay vegan and grow up to be perfectly healthy adults. So just keep yourself educated about what you eat and don't let anyone tell you that a veg diet is lacking anything essential.

Technically the term "vegetarian" does imply that you don't consume anything that comes from the body of an animal that requires killing it. Many ingredients such as gelatin and glycerin are found in many candies, Fig-Newtons, and many of other foods as well as rennet found in many cheeses.
http://www.happycow.net/health-animal-ingredients.html
The best thing to remember is to take your time so that for example: when you are comfortable not eating beef and pork you can then give up chicken when you are sure you can make the commitment permanently.
Depending on your age or reliance on parents or regional options, it may not be best to give yourself a label. The important thing is to do your best to make progress and be committed to your compassion towards animals. Never put your focus onto what you or other people use to describe yourself.

If you meet someone that talks down to people for eating meat, dairy, etc or to you because they think they are "more veg" than you, laugh in their face and tell them they are a disgrace to the entire philosophy. People like this only hurt the idea of veg*ism AND the animals. The point of all of this is to live compassionately and and as free from cruelty as you can, all the while maintaining your health and a positive attitude. People who don't maintain either, need not open their mouths and represent our beliefs.

If you actually choose to read all of this, I hope it helps. If not, feel free to e-mail me if you have questions.
