Healthy sandwich bread recipe?

Alyssa D

I need a HEALTHY quick bread recipe that i could use for sandwiches. This means i don't need too much flavor since the things i put on it to make the sandwich will add flavor. By healthy i mean no butter (or butter substitute), no sugar (or splenda), and no oil (besides a minimal amount of light tasting extra virgin olive oil). i want it to use baking soda or powder instead of yeast and i only want it to make one loaf. I currently have -
all purpose flour
whole wheat flour
extra virgin olive oil
1% milk
vanilla yogurt
eggs
honey
rolled oats
and many spices

Answer
Why do you think butter, splenda, butter substitutes, yeast, and oil are unhealthy? Do you research or just follow a silly crowd.
If you use the ingredients you want you will get a horrible product.
You might as well put your organic tuna on cardboard and eat it.
My advise to you is to make a nice bread and enjoy life.

Easy healthy recipes?

Q. Im looking for some easy healthy recipes. something quick and nothing too special. I mean i eat tuna straight from a can or mix it with fat free yogurt and spread some on bread. I eat cottage cheese on bread (Fat free). Im looking for simple things like that, where i get some good protein while avoiding fat and keeping the carbs rather low. Im not a fan of salads however i do like mixing chopped up vegetables as long as i stay away from the things i dont like.

Ill list some things i do not like:
celery
regular lettuce
raw onion
cabbage

Now some things i do like
cucumber
mushroom
olive
chicken
turkey
fish (all of them)
seafood

Im tring to lose weight and im no chef so i need to come up with ideas so i stop eating the same 3 things every day. Also some healthy deserts would be nice for a snake. i found cinnamon and cottage cheese was actually quite good. something similar that stays very healthy.

Answer
I don't know if you like yogurt, but kefir is a great alternative to yogurt - more healthful punch and great if wanting to lose weight. You may want to check into it. You can get it lowfat and drink like a shake or add nutty granola for breakfast. Kefir will also help your digestion and keep bacteria balanced while you diet.

You can also put some kefir in the blender with your favorite fruits and make a great morning drink.

Cucumbers make a great sandwich! We use them here on sandwiches in the summer when they are in season.

Try stir frying your favorite veggies with a bit of chicken. Very easily done by just adding some coconut oil (healthful fats) to a pan and tossing in your favorite chopped veggies and chicken. To season add a bit of soy sauce and giner. Light, easy and served on a bed of rice it makes a great quick low cal meal with lots of nutrients.

Take care with the fish and tuna. Most are contaminated with mercury, which the body doesn't like to eliminate. There are dietary guidelines based on the mercury content. I believe tuna they say no more than once a week.

The cinnamon is a great add. Put it on whatever you want. It aids digestion and will help with your weight loss goals.

Egg Salad Sandwich Recipe 10 points!!!?

Pretty Gir

Can someone link me to a recipe or copy/paste it. I lost my recipe of the egg salad sandwich.

Mine had
Toast / bread
Mayo i think... Help me out here
Lettuce maybe? dont know?
Eggs ofc.
And it also had onions the green circular ones
o yeah is it healthy?

Answer
Angels sounds good. This is how I make mine:

Multiply as necessary. This is per sandwich:

3 Eggs, boiled & chopped
2 Tablespoons Mayonnaise (just enough to bind it. less is more here.)
1 Teaspoon Mustard
3 Green Onions, chopped in 1/8 - 1/4 inch pieces
Pinch of Cayenne
Iceberg Lettuce
Toasted Bread (I like Whole Wheat or Sour Dough)

It sounds like you know how to do it. Chop the eggs and slice the green onions, add everything else and mix it well. Chill it really well and make your sandwich. I like to add Iceberg Lettuce on mine for that nice, cool crunch.

Bon Apetit'!

As for being 'healthy', the mayonnaise probably wouldn't make the top 10 healthy dishes. But compared to McDonalds? Sure it is. Everything in moderation is fine, barring any particular health problems.

Healthy affordable meals...any recipes for me?

Samantha

My fiance and I are trying to eat healthier, but we are on a budget and we are busy. So I cant spend two hours fixing dinner. 10 points for the person who gives me the most recipes.

Answer
Egg salad sandwiches
Soups with any left overs and odds and ends at the end of the week
Meatloaf (yes it can be healthy use turkey and a bit of beef or prok and lots of veggies) roasted potatoes would be better than mashed and a little gravy for the meatloaf or even just mustard.

Do this over breaded chicken breasts.

The NSA is No Salt Added. I am on a low sodium diet so I can adjust to accordingly to taste and to fit my diet guidlines

Spaghetti Sauce:

Everyone does theirs different but here is the general way I do mine. Not exact as I just toss most everything in as I go and taste a lot and eye-ball it.

1 can NSA stewed diced tomatoes
1 can NSA tomato sauce
1 can tomato paste-sometimes
1 small onion chopped
1 good sized clove of garlic chopped
Unsalted butter
Low or no sodium chicken broth
Italian seasoning
Basil
Oregano
Parsley
Dried Chives
Pinch sugar
Pepper
Granulated Garlic
Onion powder
¼ tsp or less celery salt

Saute the onion and garlic until translucent and tender. Add the tomatoes and remaining ingredients. I like to simmer mine for at least 20-30 min. Use over pasta with or with out meat. In lasagna, chicken parmesan etcâ¦
Simmer bone in skinless chicken thighs and legs, until they are fall of the bone tender for super yummy chicken sauce.

You can also add a little more water and some chopped veggies and make a tomato veggie soup.

Crock Pot Chicken Salsa Curry

10 chicken thighs-bone in
1 jar of your fav salsa
1/2 onion chopped
1 tablespoon curry (or about 1/2 if you don't like a strong curry taste)
1/2 cup sour cream

Place the chicken in the crock pot. Mix the onion, curry and salsa. Pour over the chicken and cook on low for about 6-8 hours.

When the chicken is done take it out of the crock pot and put on a serving plate. Add the sour cream and mix well. Spoon the sauce over the chicken.

This would go well with rice or cous cous.

If you don't have crock pot you could also do this is a roasting pan or a casserole dish with a cover or tin foil(about 200) check it though since it may cook faster. I have only done this once in the oven and I think I cooked it for 3-4 hours. This recipe is easy to do smaller portions of as well.

---------------------

Use low fat cream cheese on this one and it will taste just as good:

Creamy chicken enchiladas:

1 pound boneless chicken breasts diced
1 8oz package cream cheese cut into cubes
Flour or corn tortillas
1 can diced green chili peppers
ground cumin
1 or 2 can green enchilada sauce
Shredded cheese

Cook the chicken in a skillet and when the chicken is done add the cream cheese, it will melt. As the cream cheese melts add the green chilis, and a couple of good dashes of cumin. Continue to heat on low until the cream cheese has melted.

Fill a tortilla with the chicken mix, roll and place in a baking dish, Continue until the chicken mix is gone. Top with the enchilada sauce and sprinkle with cheese. Bake at 350 for about 10-15 min or until the sauce is nice and hot and the cheese is golden and bubbly.

-------------

You could also do this with Turkey:

Italian Burger and Ramen Noodle Skillet Dinner:

2 packages beef ramen noodles
1 pound ground beef
24 slices pepperoni
1can (14.5 oz) canned tomatoes
1 small clove garlic, chopped
¼ small onion chopped
2 tsp Italian seasoning
1cup water
1small green bell pepper chopped
1cup shredded mozzarella

Break the blocks of noodles in ½ and keep only one packet of seasoning mix.

In a 10 in skillet cook the meat about ½ way and drain the fat. Return the beef to the skillet and add pepperoni and onion. Stir in the tomatoes, water and single seasoning packet. Bring to a boil and add the noodles and bell pepper. Cook 3-5 min, stirring occasionally until noodles are tender.

Sprinkle the cheese around the edge of the pan (leave middle open) cover and let stand for about 5 min to let the cheese melt.

------------------

Autmn Chop Skillet:
All you need is 2 chops, 1 red bell pepper-cut into 1 in pieces
1 apple peeled and sliced.
Season the chops with salt and pepper, cook the chops in a tiny bit of oil, brown on one side and turn, add the onions, pepper, and apples. Cook until chops are done and the other ingredients are crisp tender. Serve with rice.
-----------------
Sweet Chop Bake:
The next recipe is for as many chops as you want to make. Salt and pepper both sides of the chops, place in a baking dish. Top EACH chop with the following
1 tbsp brown sugar
1 tbsp ketchup
1 slice onion
1 slice lemon

Bake at 350 for about 30-45 min depending on how many chops, and how thick they are. This dish creates just a tiny bit of a nice sweet tangy sauce. You can simmer an extra serving or 2 the topping ingredients on the stove top with a little water if you would like. I serve this dish over rice also. Different sounding but very good!!!

Could someone give me a really good healthy whole grain bread recipe for the bread machine?

Bella C <3

'm looking for a really good whole grain bread recipe. It MUST be light and fluffy on the inside, I really dont like when bread turns out too dense

Thanks in advance!

Answer
Yes, first link in "sources," but you can get better results if you'll use the bread machine only for the dough. Hear me out.

King Arthur Flour's classic 100% Whole Wheat Sandwich Bread (second link in "sources") is the bread you want, but it's not one you should BAKE in the bread machine. Bread machines don't shape loaves of bread really well, and they can't give you "ovenspring" -- when you put a loaf of proofed dough into a hot oven, the heat makes the yeast go crazy and gives it a very big boost, giving big rise. The bread machine heats gradually, and you don't get as much spring out of it.

You can make this bread using the "dough" cycle on your bread machine, then shape it, let it rise again (proof), and bake it in a hot oven to get really nice results. But if you try to bake this in a bread machine, it won't rise as high, so it will be more dense.

If your schedule or needs require that it bake in the machine, you'll want the first recipe. It won't be as fluffy and light as a loaf that's properly shaped and proofed and put into an already-hot oven, but it'll be tasty.

Anyone have any fun food recipes that would be good for a 2 yr. old?

I am babysitting and the 2 year old wants to make some fun food with me but I dont know what to make. It has to be healthy but good at the same time! And it would be nice if it could be made in at least 30min. So if you have any good, fun, food recipes for a 2 year old let me know! Who ever has the best idea gets 10 points!

Answer
Peanut butter and jelly sandwich... let the kid spread with fingers the peanut butter on toast to make a round circle almost covering the entire piece of bread, then with jelly make eyes and nose, ears and mouth. If he/she likes raisins let him put them in the eyes.
Eat and enjoy!

What are some simple, yummy, healthy recipes?

I am looking for some easy, healthy, yummy recipes. Short preparation and cook time preferred. Please keep in mind that I'm a college student that works part time and I cannot spend tons of money either. Also, I do not eat chicken or pork. I prefer to eat seafood most of the time as it is lean and healthy. I eat beef very rarely because I prefer it over iron tablets. Thanks! :)

Answer
Stir fry - Put a bunch of vegetables in the wok with a touch of oil, serve over short grain brown rice.

Soup - Boil vegetables, throw in some noodles, drop in a raw egg or some cooked beans, how about a few shrimp.

Tortillas, beans & cheese. Slice in some tomatoe and avocado.

Sandwiches - Get nice crusty bread, good cheeses, fresh tomatoes, grilled vegetables, tuna fish. Also smoked fish on bagels.

Pilaf - Rice with herbs & seasonings, mix in toasted nuts & seeds, stir in some minced broccoli, carrot or cauliflower, cook using broth for more flavor, add fresh melon on top

Get some good Indian, Chinese and South Asian cookbooks!

What Healthy Ingredients Can I Buy And Cook?

Sam

I'm thinking of making spaghetti with sausage and peppers and tomatoes in tomato puree as a nice healthy meal, but i have no oher dieas of wehat else i can make.

I'll need an idea for lunch (all i have is a ham & cheese sandwich)
I'll need an idea for tea (all i have is the spaghetti idea)
I'll need an idea for supper (i have no idea at all)

Supper doesn't need to be very big as we don't really have large suppers, just maybe a yoghurt or bowl of cereal, you know.

Answer
pastas, rice, lean meats, veggies canned frozen or fresh, deli meat, eggs, milk, cheese, bread, soups

Something really simple is instant rice that you can make in the microwave.

I eat red beans and rice a lot. And cream of chicken soup mixed with rice and grilled chicken.

http://southernfood.about.com/od/beefcasserolesandpies/Beef_Casserole_Recipes_and_Beef_Pies.htm there are some casserole recipes. Casseroles are awesome and there are almost always left overs that make good lunches. :]
The tuna helpers are pretty simple and cheap too.

ramen is good to keep on hand, you can mix stuff in it to make it better such as canned mushrooms, tuna or chicken.

lasagna is pretty healthy. Any pasta for that matter. Fettuccine Alfredo, with some baked cheesy garlic bread with cheese and garlic on top is always good and simple.

What is an extremely healthy but inexpensive 7 day meal plan that I can go by?

Katnip95

I want to start eating healthier. I don't really have any self motivation so maybe a meal plan will help me get in gear. I don't like drinking anything but water anyway so I'm good on that part. Any suggestions? (:

Answer
I will give 7 options for each meal sorry I am a vegetarian mostly so lol

Breakfast 1
Oatmeal with fruit (you can add a bit of honey to sweeten)
Breakfast 2
1 egg (prepared as you like), baked beans, 1-2 slices of whole-grain toast, fresh fruit, you can add 2 pieces of turkey bacon if you like
Breakfast 3
1 almond or peanut butter sandwich (use the natural kind), 1 banana, it's good if you can drink a small glass of milk but if not just stick with your water
Breakfast 4
2 oz of fish (it's not really expensive if you buy a fresh fish at a good price and then divide it into 2-3 oz servings b/c 1 pound of fish can give you 8 meals), 1/2 cup brown rice, http://www.yummly.com/recipe/Stir_fried-Sesame-Bok-Choy-Recipezaar, fresh fruit, personally I drink green tea here
Breakfast 5
2 open-faced veggie sandwiches on whole grain bread or wasa crackers, I add a thin slice of cheese (use a cheese carver it gets them really thin), fruit
Breakfast 6
Muesli and kefir (it tastes similar to plain yogurt it's excellent for digestion but it does take getting used too my husband loves it but I am not too fond of it personally) alternately you can have a healthy cereal with reduced fat cow's milk or fortified soy or rice milk depending on the cereal I might add fresh fruit I like nectarines with my bran flakes
Breakfast 7 (this tastes like a bit like a really nice chunky applesauce)
- Raw Food Breakfast -
"Oatmeal"

Serves 2
2 apples
1 banana
1 tablespoon golden flax seed
2 teaspoons cinnamon
Pure water
Directions

Put the flax seeds in the purified water and let sit overnight.

Peel the apples and cut them in smaller parts (for the blender). Peel the banana and break in parts. Rinse the flax seeds.

Put all ingredients in a blender. Add 1/4 cup water, just enough to let the mixture blend well. Blend all ingredients until smooth. You may want to add a little more water if it's too thick (I don't).
Tip
Can add nuts and/or raisins

Lunch 1
Salad (2-3 oz grilled chicken, cabbage shredded, apples (diced and peeled), yellow bell peppers julienned, diced red onion (small amount), caramelized cashews, avocado, cottage cheese (instead of dressing I detest cottage cheese but on this salad superb)
Lunch 2
Hummus and raw veg stuffed in a whole wheat pita, fruit salad
Lunch 3
tuna (just canned or pouched in water), bulghur (cooked in a vegetable broth), cucumber, tomato, avocado, bell peppers, mixed together you can add a small drizzle of olive oil
Lunch 4
http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/12753/asian-prawn-and-pineapple-salad
Lunch 5
Chilli with rice (I add veggie crumbles for B-vitamins and so it's ultra low fat but you can use lean ground beef or turkey crumbles try to avoid full fat ground beef)
Lunch 6
http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/333614/red-lentil-chickpea-and-chilli-soup
I like to have with hearty healthy bread. If you can't bring yourself to try lentils which are excellent for your health have some Minestrone Soup
Lunch 7
Black Bean Burritos alternatively if you are more of a meat eater
Apple Pork Wraps

Fresh sage
Handful of pork
Olive oil
A few leaves of romaine lettuce
Whole-wheat wrap
About 2" of cucumber, sliced thinly
1/2 an apple, sliced thinly
Salt and pepper

Chop the sage finely. Mix the pork and fresh sage with 1/2 - 1 teaspoon of olive oil. Lay one or two leaves of romaine lettuce on the whole-wheat wrap. Spread the pork evenly over the lettuce. Cover this with thinly sliced cucumber and apple. Add salt and pepper to taste. Wrap and eat.
=
Dinner 1
http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/1031/thaistyle-steamed-fish 1/2 cup brown rice
Dinner 2
http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/10388/thai-chicken-and-mushroom-broth (I would have with 1/2 cup of brown rice)
Dinner 3
Chicken Fajitas (I personally make my own wraps b/c I can't stand the taste of store bought ones)
Dinner 4
http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/681659/watermelon-prawn-and-avocado-salad
Dinner 5
http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/12142/tofu-greens-and-cashew-stirfry
Dinner 6
Thai-style Turkey Burgers look these up on that BBC Food Site you can have baked fries or some crispy raw veggies on the side
Dinner 7
Shish Kebobs lots of grilled veggies and a protein (hallomi cheese, chicken, shrimp, beef, lamb whatever) you can have with some brown rice

Don't forget healthy snacks: plain nuts and seeds, oatmeal, yoghurt, raw veg (with hummus), fresh fruit, fruit and veggies smoothies great for breakfast but I know you only drink water so maybe you won't like, slice of healthy bread w/nut butter

Not necessarily in this order I just put them down as they occurred you can also swap dinners and lunches. I tried to make dinner lighter b/c it's ideal

What do you fit, healthy good looking athletic people eat?

Q. To the fitness buffs and health freaks out there (I look up to you all!)
What do you eat usually? What's your favorite healthy meal? Can I have the recipe to it?

And what do your meals in a typical week look like?

Most detailed gets best answer. Please and thank you, this will really help me out.

Thank you!

Answer
Well, before the new fall semester started, this summer was a great one for me, and my nutritionist would be proud!

First I would ensure to wake up not too late so I could get my first meal of the day, which almost always was a ALL FRUIT smoothie from either Jamba juice or Robeks (24 fl oz -ish). Or I'd make myself one via blender. Its important to get your carbohydrates/fruit in early to maintain energy throughout the day.

2-3 hours later, a small snack.. apple, or banana, or granola bar, or protein shake, or carrots, etc... something like that.

Lunch- My favorite, make a sandwich! or go to subway (or one of the million other sandwich shops around). Try not to go crazy with the dressings. I would usually eat a 6 inch (subway), but if I was feeling more hungry, it wouldn't hurt to get a 12'inch. Make sure you throw tomato's , lettuce, and any other vegi-sort of things you like on there.

2-3 hours later another small snack.

Dinner time, This is soooo GOOD! to this day I have not gotten sick of it. Go out buy a George foreman grill, and a lot of "lemon seasoned chicken" and make that (get your protein in). Its amazing, and healthy. Make some vegetables for a side (any vegi's you want), and maybe some mash potatoes/ or rice/ or soup. If you go out to a restaurant don't even look at the salad section. They usually end up being worse for you than french fries. So get a nice steak (preferably a less fatty cut, a.k.a avoid the ribeye, make sure to get some vegetables for a side).

1-3 hours later (OPTIONAL) Snack if you are still hungry later on.

NOTE: I never drink anything other than water and milk (except the smoothies of course). Maybe an occasional cappuccino from Starbucks. Try to stay away from soda's.

So this is pretty much an average day for me, remember its okay to spoil yourself sometimes. Especially if you are maintaining proper fitness. Hope this helps.

Answer
4 small chicken breasts, sliced into strips
1 tablespoon Cajun spice
2 teaspoons olive oil
4 large flour tortillas
1/2 cup tzatikki dip
1 medium zuccini, grated
1 large carrot, grated

Method:
1. Place chicken strips, Cajun spice and oil in a bowl, cover and set aside for 10 minutes.

2. Heat a large non-stick fry pan over a medium-high heat.

3. Place the chicken strips in the pan and cook, stirring occasionally for 5 minutes or until brown and cooked through. Transfer to a bowl and keep warm.

4. Top each tortilla with Tzatziki dip, carrot, zuccini and grated carrot.

5. Serve immediately, or wrap for later use with a green salad of your choice.

Or a sandwich with a salad can be an easier alternative.
Salads are really good also.

What are a few gluten free soup recipes that are comfort food for you?

WinonaGal

Fall is here, only a few more days before our calendar tells us it is officially here. This time of year, I want those warm things like soups and stews. Yet, my somewhat recently diagnosed need to be gluten free has me really annoyed as most commercial soups are not gluten free. I've tried a few of the health food store kind of GF soups and I really do dislike them.
I'm a Campbell's gal who grew up on those soups that were easy to serve, quick and I liked them. I can't believe wheat is even in their clear broth based soups. I know these canned soups were not always the most healthy things in terms of sodium and various other things, but it is what I grew up on. The convenience of opening a can and having it alongside a sandwich or salad was just always there for me.
I am determined to be healthy and feel well, so I've started making soups myself and plan to keep a number of them in my freezer in individually frozen containers.
So, if you have a few nice recipes that you enjoy and give you that warm soup cozy feeling on a chilly day, what do you love? I'm especially wanted a cream of tomato soup that mimics Campbell's (but will be healthier of course) so I can make my grilled cheese (with GF bread, of course) and have my tomato soup to dunk in.
Thanks if you can help! Crock pot recipes are most welcome as well, due to the time factor.

Answer
Creamy Vegan Broccoli-Cauliflower Soup

This soup recipe best for autumn and the early winter can’t get any simpler. All the ingredients are practically thrown in the pot and simmered then pureed and it is ready to serve. The delicious and nutritious combination of broccoli and cauliflower come together in one delicious dish. To make this simple vegan recipe, you need broccoli, cauliflower, yellow onions, garlic, turnip, potato, celeriac, dry green lentils, vegetable stock or water, tamari, virgin olive oil, and dried thyme.

Ingredients
3 C broccoli florets and stems, diced
2 C cauliflower florets and stems, diced
1 yellow onion, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 white turnip peeled and diced
1 large potato, peeled and diced
1 C celeriac, peeled and diced
½ C dry green lentils
8 C water OR vegetable stock
1 tbsp tamari (optional – omit if using vegetable stock)
1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 tbsp dried thyme
1
Combine all ingredients in a very large soup pot.

2
Bring to a rolling boil, then turn the heat down and allow to simmer for 30 minutes (until everything is falling apart in the pot).

3
In a blender, puree the soup in batches, transferring each pureed batch into a large mixing bowl as you go.

4
When everything is pureed to a thick, creamy smoothness, return soup to original pot, heat through, serve, and enjoy.

What is an extremely healthy but inexpensive 7 day meal plan that I can go by?
Q. I want to start eating healthier. I don't really have any self motivation so maybe a meal plan will help me get in gear. I don't like drinking anything but water anyway so I'm good on that part. Any suggestions? (:

Lunch 4

Lunch 5
Chilli with rice (I add veggie crumbles for B-vitamins and so it's ultra low fat but you can use lean ground beef or turkey crumbles try to avoid full fat ground beef)
Lunch 6
http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/333614/red-lentil-chickpea-and-chilli-soup
I like to have with hearty healthy bread. If you can't bring yourself to try lentils which are excellent for your health have some Minestrone Soup
Lunch 7
Black Bean Burritos alternatively if you are more of a meat eater
Apple Pork Wraps

Fresh sage
Handful of pork
Olive oil
A few leaves of romaine lettuce
Whole-wheat wrap
About 2" of cucumber, sliced thinly
1/2 an apple, sliced thinly
Salt and pepper

Chop the sage finely. Mix the pork and fresh sage with 1/2 - 1 teaspoon of olive oil. Lay one or two leaves of romaine lettuce on the whole-wheat wrap. Spread the pork evenly over the lettuce. Cover this with thinly sliced cucumber and apple. Add salt and pepper to taste. Wrap and eat.

Thank you!
