Any tips to start eating healthy?

*-*

What are some healthy recipes and foods I should be buying/trying? Whats your favorite healthy meal for breakfast lunch and dinner? Also can I still eat beef and chicken?

Answer
The general tips for eating healthily are:

- Choose wholegrain pasta and bread, and brown rice instead of the white variety. They're higher in fibre and will help your digestion. They can also make you feel full/satisfied for longer.
- Eat lots of fruit and vegetables. They're full of vitamins and fibre and pretty nutrient dense.
- Choose low fat milk, cheeses and yogurts. Dairy products are important for calcium. If you're lactose-intolerant, find calcium-enriched types of soy/oat/rice-milk or other calcium-enriched foods. Dairy products, especially yogurt, can help our digestive systems. They're also high in protein, which is needed for our body's growth and repair.
- Fish and lean meat/poultry are better choices than more fatty-types such as lamb and ham. If the meat you're eating has visible fat, cut it off and avoid eating it.
- Eat more unsaturated types of fat, cut down on saturated fat and eliminate trans fat from your diet. The unsaturated fats, found in foods like nuts, seeds, avocados plant oils and oily fish are good for your heart and brain.
- Cut down on salt. Too much salt can cause problems with blood pressure.
- Use cooking methods such as baking, boiling, grilling and steaming over frying and deep-frying.

Here are a few sites with 'healthy recipes':
http://www.whfoods.com/recipestoc.php
http://www.goodtoknow.co.uk/recipes/Healthy-eating
http://uktv.co.uk/food/homepage/sid/6037
http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/content/recipes/healthy/

For breakfast, I quite like having fruit dipped in fat-free yogurt along with some soy milk and a high-fibre cereal bar (the alpen light ones). Sometimes, when it's cold, I enjoy having some wholemeal toast with olive oil spread, egg whites and tomato.
For lunch, I love the layered salads - especially the prawn and tuna ones - that supermarkets like M&S and Sainsbury's do. I also love trying some of their sandwiches - especially salmon or tuna ones. I usually also have some fruit and low-fat cheese or a yogurt with it.
For dinner, I like having the layered salads. I also love chicken lasagne with some cut vegetables (e.g. tomato, cucumber, pepper). Seafood dishes taste great too. I love it when my mom makes steamed sea bass with chilli and vegetables and boiled potatoes with a little drizzle of olive oil. She grows her own spring onions and chilli, and make everything taste amazing. <3

Chicken and beef are actually quite healthy sources of protein. Just remember to choose lean cuts of beef. Chicken breast is usually the lowest in fat, sometimes leg is ok too, just avoid the skin and usually the thighs.

I need some very simple, yummy and healthy vegetarian meal ideas?

Q. I think I have breakfast sorted, but I'm getting bored of what I have for lunch, and especially dinner. Lunch is usually salad, soup or beans on toast. What else could I make? And I'm really running out of ideas for dinner. Sometimes I have different kinds of beans with dressing, or Quorn burgers or something but I need something more interesting.

Answer
There are probably an infinite variety of options based on sandwiches!

Try some of the following:
Rice and Peas. There are lots of recipes for this online. Here is a very simple one: http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/riceandpeas_81543

Baked potato with butter, or with beans, or with cheese, or with pesto (ready-made from a jar if you are in a hurry)

Stir-fried vegetables with noodles, possibly with marinated tofu. Web search "vegetarian Pad Thai" for a particularly nice variant, or take a "normal" Pad Thai recipe and miss out the shrimp and fish sauce.

Pasta with red sauce made from chopped onions, garlic, basil, oregano, chopped courgette (zucchini), chopped bell pepper (capsicum) and topped with grated cheese or mixed with a dollop of cream, fresh natural yoghurt or mascarpone.

Cheese Pasty and chips (with peas maybe). Healthy enough if it's once in a while, just for a bit of variety.

Fried mushrooms on toast. Use just a tiny drizzle of olive oil (no need to spend a fortune on extra virgin olive oil) so no worries about fat. Add black pepper perhaps.

Recipes or recipe sites for a picky eater?

S

My husband is a very very picky eater. He loathes eating chicken, lasagna, strawberries, tomatoes and tomato products that taste strongly of tomatoes, cucumbers, raviolis, fish products (excluding tuna), melons, pot roasts, and stews. He eats fruits and vegetables but only if they're corn on the cob and raspberries. He also almost always refuses water instead opting for chocolate milk, kool-aid, or soda.
I, on the other hand, love just about anything excluding fish products (excluding tuna) and raviolis.

Recently we had a child and I don't want to sit by any longer and eat such unhealthy foods. Dinners usually consist of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, hamburgers and fries, spaghetti, and Hamburger Helpers. Ugh. I'm desperate for something different and HEALTHY. But unfortunately we're on a strict budget of no more than $100 every two weeks for dinners and lunches.

Does anyone know of any sites or recipes that offer affordable and delicious meals for people as picky as my husband? Preferably some with vegetables and baked food because, honestly, I'm not afraid of bullying my husband into eating what's good for him. Anything will work though.

Please no spam links or rude comments.

Answer
There are many different websites full of recipes on the internet. I think you may just have to search through a few until you find something suitable.
I find this website quite easy to navigate and use as you can search for specific ingredients: http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/
This is also a good website for recipes: http://www.food.com/
Also, often parenting websites have some good recipes for picky eaters as lots of kids are quite picky so you may want to check a few of those out, e.g. http://www.parenting.com/recipes/picky-eaters

Healthy Lunch Ideas Help?

Corey

I've making a diet for myself and i need Healthy Lunch ideas.

Answer
Base your lunch on a health wholegrain carbohydrate. You could have a wholemeal sandwich, wrap, bun or pitta. If you're not a fan of breads, then you could also have a salad made from brown rice, wholemeal pasta or other wholegrain foods such as quinoa.
Remember to add plenty of veg to your sandwich/salad as well as a piece of fruit on the side.
Some low fat cheese would taste great with the salad/sandwich, or have a low-fat/fat-free yogurt with the fruit.
Have some seafood (e.g. tuna, salmon, prawn) or lean meat (e.g. chicken breast) with the sandwich/salad to add some healthy protein.

How can I lose weight faster?

T

I weigh over 240 and I wanted to know, how could I loose at least 90 before the end of next year. Any tips on how I can get very fit before my prom. Special diets. At home exercises, etc.

Answer
I did this and lost 40 lbs in just under 3 months:
Breakfast: Choose one

Fiber One Cereal: There are like 8 different choices on flavors, caramel, fruit, honey, raisen bran, original, ect. All very healthy for you and a great way to start off the day with minimal sugar and a boost of fiber. (1 full cup of cereal + milk is more than I can eat and it's less than 200 calories)

Thomas Whole Grain English Muffins: If you're in the mood for some warm bread, pop one into the toaster and spread some organic peanut butter, No sugar added jam, or I can't believe it's not butter for a warm and delicious breakfast pastry (Note: buy peanut butters in which the oil is at the top and you have to mix it in; avoid brands like Skippy or Jif.) (Each english muffin is 100 calories but be careful of toppings, they add up quickly)

Egg Beater/Egg Whites: You can buy cartons of egg beaters or egg whites in the store. they are delicious, you will not be able to tell the difference between them and regular eggs. Except for the fact that EB/EW cook faster and more easily than regular eggs with no beating the eggs or shells to clean up. Make an ommlete or scrambled eggs and throw in some chopped peppers, spinach, turkey bacon, or skim cheese.

For luches and dinners I recommend Clean Eating. It's a delicious way to Eat without lots of sodium, or artificial chemicals. I have lost 40lbs eating clean. And in over a year of cooking there meals, not ONCE have I been disappointed with the flavor of their recipies!

http://www.cleaneatingmag.com/Recipes.asâ¦

My fave's
Fish and Chips (because I'm from the UK, I grew up loving Fish and Chips and these are so delicious and when I eat them I feel like I'm back at The Laughing Halibut in London) http://www.cleaneatingmag.com/Recipes/Reâ¦
($1.79 for all materials, They come in at just under 300 calories)

Goat Cheese & Kalamata Paninis: These are so amazing I want one right now. The PERFECT lunch. One very filling sandwich is 300 calories
http://www.cleaneatingmag.com/Recipes/Reâ¦

Chocolate Chunk Banana Bread: I love making this, it's actually fun to cook and tastes so amazing!
http://www.cleaneatingmag.com/Recipes/Reâ¦
Makes a large loaf with 12 slices at 180 calories a slice.

Blueberry Strudel: Very reminiscent of a small sidewalk bakery I grew up by. This is without a doubt my favorite dessert. serves the recipe makes more than enough for 4 at 200 calories each.
http://www.cleaneatingmag.com/Recipes/Reâ¦

But, if you were to follow my advice, eating one of my breakfast options at about 300 calories, a clean lunch at about 300 calories, a dinner at about 300-400 calories, and a dessert at about 150, you ate 3 HUGE meals and a decadent dessert at a grand total of 1050-1150 calories a day.

The average male burns about 2400 calories in one day without working out (females is anywhere from 1600-2200 depending on many, many things; you guys are just.... complex =P, also keep in mind this is an average. If you are 6' 8'' 300 lbs you would burn more than average, If you were 4'8'' 100lbs, you would burn less.) A Pound is equal to 3500 calories. therefore without working out, you will lose a pound every 3 days. stick to the diet for a month and you are at 10 lbs, do it this fall: 30lbs. I dropped 40 lbs in 3 months (although I did run once or twice a week but nothing too intense, but that was negated by the fact that I cheated on days I ran by going to my local bakery and ordering all sorts of sweets for breakfast!)

Good luck with your weight loss

SMITTY is a Fish & Chips in a sandwich - where do I find the special sauce?

The "Smitty" is a unique sandwich created by a community college student in CT, from what I understand it is Fish & Chips btwn 2 pieces of bread (like a chip butty but you keep the batter fried fish) and then there is a special sauce. Where do I find it? Looked in all the online recipe sites - can anyone help?
the chip butty is big in Montreal? the Smitty however keeps the fish part in there

looking for the sauce recipe

Answer
Maybe the codfish is over-fished, right? For the Smitty, use whatever you like on fried fish - I like honey-mustard
Fish to eat
• This is a list of species (from 2007) you can enjoy eating with a clean conscience (for those who are concerned about over-fishing)

These are the fish that are available to UK and European consumers which the Marine Conservation Society believes are fished within sustainable levels using methods which do not cause unacceptable damage to the environment or other marine species.
Black bream
The black bream is one of two species commonly found in northern European seas. It has sweet, firm flesh and is being found on more menus in eateries around the UK.
Choose line-caught fish where available, or fish taken in fixed nets where measures to deter marine mammals have been adopted. Avoid eating immature fish (less than 23cm) caught prior to and during their spawning season (April and May in UK inshore waters), so that they have the chance to spawn or reproduce. The most sustainable stocks are from Cornwall or north-west and northern Wales.
Gurnard (grey and red)
Gurnards belong to a group of fish known collectively as Trigliadae, or sea robins.
Grey gurnard are taken as by-catch in trawl fisheries in deeper offshore waters, but its firm flesh is considered to have a robust flavour. and they, along with yellow or tub, are under less pressure than red gurnard. Avoid eating immature fish (less than 24cm) and fresh (not previously frozen) fish caught during the spawning season (April-August).
Lemon sole
The fishery for lemon sole is largely unregulated. Taken as by-catch in trawl fisheries. Only stocks in Norwegian and North Seas are subject to mixed quota restrictions. Choose otter-trawled fish landed in Cornwall where a minimum landing size (25 cms) above the size at which it matures is enforced. Avoid eating immature fish (below 25 cm) and during its breeding period April-August.
Mackerel
Mackerel is a fast-swimming species belonging to a group of fish known as the scombrid family, which are related to the tuna. It's an oily fish with a distinctive flavour. Stocks are healthy, except in the North Sea. You can increase the sustainability of the fish you eat by choosing line- or net-caught fish from fisheries certified by the MSC. Mackerel taken by handline is an even better choice as this method only targets mackerel.
Megrim
A common flatfish found in shelf seas throughout the north-east Atlantic, megrim and the closely related witch are members of the sole family. Figures show that 90% of Britain's megrim and witch catch is exported to the continent. Choose megrim that is otter-trawled (where the mouth of the net remains open) from waters in the west of Ireland and the Western Channel where stock is classified as healthy. Avoid eating immature fish (less than 25cms) and during their spawning season (January to April).
Pollack
Distributed throughout the north-east Atlantic, pollack is championed as the best substitute for cod and haddock. It is a by-catch of cod and the best choice to make, in terms of selectivity and sustainability, is line-caught pollack. Avoid eating immature fish (below 50cm) and during its breeding season (January to April).
Whiting
Whiting are a low-value species and often discarded in large quantities. The English Channel stock is currently the only stock assessed by marine scientists as having full reproductive capacity and being healthy. Avoid eating immature fish (less than 30 cms), and fresh (not previously frozen) fish caught during the spawning season (March-April).

Would any meal made from scratch at home be considered healthy? Or what kind of meals are considered healthy?

I'm trying to eat healthy - not really worried about weight, just want to be able to make meals that will keep us healthy. Heart disease and diabetes runs in my family so I'm looking for any recipes that would help us prevent those diseases. Does anyone know where I can find some healthy recipes. Thanks

Answer
Generally, when one eats out, there will be a lot more fat, sodium, and simple carbohydrates in the food, and a lot less fiber, whole grains, and other nutrients. So eating out less does often translate into a better overall diet.

BUT... food at home could also be prepared with lots of fat (frying, etc.), or sodium or simple carbohydrates as well, and the choice of which foods to prepare could also fall high on the fat/etc. side.

Here are some sites that should help you get oriented to what you need to eat, and to avoid, to "eat healthy" as well as recipes:

There are some decent things you can eat when you're out too, but it takes a bit of detective work (e.g., look online for the nutritional info for the larger chains)... plus knowing that you can ask for veggies instead of fries as a side, or get things that are grilled, etc., instead of fried, or how to recognize heavy fat or cheese sauces, or to ask for a food to be prepared with as little fat as possible, or to put the salad dressing or butter, etc., on the side intead of on the food, or have a take-home container brought to you when the food is delivered so you can put part of it out of sight while you eat, etc.,etc.

Best of luck! It can be done, so don't give up... it's can also be a fun adventure and there are actually loads of high-taste things that aren't "bad" for you!

Where can I find a "cute blanket and cute basket" also what kind of snacks are good on a picnic?
Q. I'm planing on taking my girl on a picnic my cousin told me I need a cute blanket and basket but I don't know where I can find either also what kind of snacks are good she doesn't like veggies or fruits or fruit flavored things except for cherry flavor and pineapple flavor

A. Try to check out the yogurt as there are many flavors and it will stay cool for a while. These two baskets are reasonable in price. In personally like the first one but I did see more and the price range I saw was from $22.00 to $711.00. The blankets are cute but the cutest ones I saw were $60.00. I did not go further into the basket and blanket as your cousin might have purchased them at some time and maybe you can borrow them. The thing I thought you would be most interested in would be the foods to take along. There is quite a list of them.
