Hey, does anyone have any HEALTHY breakfast recipes that will fill me up in the morning?

Dot

I'm in highschool and I needed some quick, nutritious ideas. Thanks a bunch!

Answer
Please be careful with the "to go" bars. The quaker oatmeal bars all contain hydrogenated oils and other terrible preservatives. Kashi makes some great bars. Their pumpkin bars are amazing!! Some other things you can do is to hardboil eggs so that when you get up in the morning you can just grab one and go. Make yourself a sandwich the night before. There is nothing wrong with grabbing a sandwich in the morning. I would suggest oatmeal but that takes a bit more time. Get some preservative free graham crackers. Eat them plain or spread natural peanut butter on them and grab a banana.

If you have time to throw something in a blender there are a ton of smoothie recipes you could make. Invest in a good travel cup with a straw or whatever so you can make your smoothie and go.

String cheese or other kinds of cheese. They make all kinds now that are already cut and easy to take with you. Bake muffins on the weekends (if you are willing to bake). Then you'll have muffins for the week. Or do the same with healthy cookie recipes. There are also all kinds of recipes for cereal and granola bars. If you're willing to put in a littl work on the weekend then you'll have quick breakfasts for the entire week.

There are all kinds of things you can do. Just be imaginative and willing to think outside the box. And try really hard to avoid the prepackaged convenience foods because they are not healthy--even if many of them say they are. If they have a list of preservatives then they are NOT healthy.

Looking for an amazing recipe?

Looking for an out of this world recipe for peanut butter cups, I so adore that candy, if you can help thanks so very much. Please something that is close to Reeseâs peanut butter cup, and if you had tried the recipes please say so. Thanks for all your help and have a wonderful day!!! Happy Cooking!

Answer
This recipe is a copycat recipe for Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. They take some time to make, but it's well worth it.
Ingredients:

* 1/3 cup powdered sugar
* 1/4 cup sour cream
* 2 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
* 1/4 teaspoon vanilla flavoring
* 3/4 cup creamy peanut butter (not fresh or natural, they are too runny)
* 1 1/2 bags semi-sweet chocolate chips
* 36 foil mini muffin liners

Preparation:
Mix sugar, sour cream, whipping cream and vanilla.

Stir in peanut butter and refrigerate for 3 hours or longer.

Place muffin liners on cookie sheets.

Melt chocolate chips in microwave or double boiler.

Drop 1 teaspoon of melted chocolate into each liner.

Use a small knife or the tip of a spoon to spread the chocolate about half an inch up the side of the liner.

Refrigerate about half an hour or until chocolate is firm.

Remove liners from refrigerator and drop 1 teaspoon of peanut butter mix into each liner.

Flatten the mix with the back of a spoon, but do not spread to the very edge of the liners.

The remaining chocolate will have cooled and become thick, so remelt it in the microwave or double boiler.

When it is smooth, spoon 1 teaspoon more into each liner, or enough to cover the peanut butter completely and form a flat top.

Refrigerate or freeze until chocolate is firm.

Store in airtight containers in the refrigerator.

Peanut Butter Cup Recipe

Makes 32 - 40 peanut butter cups
Ingredients

* 2 cups of creamy peanut butter
* 1 ½ sticks of butter or margarine
* 2 ½ cups of confectioners sugar (powdered sugar)
* 2 ½ cups of graham cracker crumbs (well crushed)
* 2 teaspoons of vanilla
* 12 ounces of chocolate chips (semi-sweet or milk chocolate)

Directions

1. Melt the peanut butter and the butter together.
2. Remove peanut butter and butter mixture from heat. Add sugar, crumbs and vanilla.
3. Press mixture into 13â x 9â x 2â pan.
4. Melt the chocolate in a double boiler. If no double boiler is available, use two saucepans, one on top of the other. Boil about 2â of water in the bottom pan. Put the chocolate in the top pan to melt. The double pan allows the chocolate to melt slowly, without burning.
5. Pour melted chocolate over the peanut butter mixture.
6. Freeze for 15 minutes.
7. Cut into squares. Refrigerate when not enjoying them.

Variations on this Recipe

Just like Reeseâs has variations on their world renowned peanut butter cup, this candy recipe can be altered in a similar way.

* Replace the semisweet chocolate chips with the same amount of white chocolate.
* Replace the semisweet chocolate chips with a dark chocolate chip to add healthy antioxidants to this sweet treat.
* Use the same amount of crunchy peanut butter in place of the creamy peanut butter.
* Put a layer of chocolate on the bottom of the dish before laying down the peanut butter. Add another layer on top of the peanut butter for a sandwich type peanut butter cup.

Q. To the fitness buffs and health freaks out there (I look up to you all!)
What do you eat usually? What's your favorite healthy meal? Can I have the recipe to it?

And what do your meals in a typical week look like?

Most detailed gets best answer. Please and thank you, this will really help me out.

Thank you!

Answer
Well, before the new fall semester started, this summer was a great one for me, and my nutritionist would be proud!

First I would ensure to wake up not too late so I could get my first meal of the day, which almost always was a ALL FRUIT smoothie from either Jamba juice or Robeks (24 fl oz -ish). Or I'd make myself one via blender. Its important to get your carbohydrates/fruit in early to maintain energy throughout the day.

2-3 hours later, a small snack.. apple, or banana, or granola bar, or protein shake, or carrots, etc... something like that.

Lunch- My favorite, make a sandwich! or go to subway (or one of the million other sandwich shops around). Try not to go crazy with the dressings. I would usually eat a 6 inch (subway), but if I was feeling more hungry, it wouldn't hurt to get a 12'inch. Make sure you throw tomato's , lettuce, and any other vegi-sort of things you like on there.

2-3 hours later another small snack.

Dinner time, This is soooo GOOD! to this day I have not gotten sick of it. Go out buy a George foreman grill, and a lot of "lemon seasoned chicken" and make that (get your protein in). Its amazing, and healthy. Make some vegetables for a side (any vegi's you want), and maybe some mash potatoes/ or rice/ or soup. If you go out to a restaurant don't even look at the salad section. They usually end up being worse for you than french fries. So get a nice steak (preferably a less fatty cut, a.k.a avoid the ribeye, make sure to get some vegetables for a side).

1-3 hours later (OPTIONAL) Snack if you are still hungry later on.

NOTE: I never drink anything other than water and milk (except the smoothies of course). Maybe an occasional cappuccino from Starbucks. Try to stay away from soda's.

So this is pretty much an average day for me, remember its okay to spoil yourself sometimes. Especially if you are maintaining proper fitness. Hope this helps.

Recipies recommended for someone who doesn't like to eat veggies?

24th Princ

I know I should eat my veggies, but they taste so bitter. If there is a recipe that will cut down on the bitterness from them, that would help me out a lot.

Answer
Cabbage
1 package of bacon(chipped/fried)
3 large chopped vadalia onions
1 head of cabbage(chipped)

Fry bacon an onions together until bacon browns.
Poor in 5/6 cups of water.
Bring the bacon, onions and water together to a boil.
Add cabbage.
Boil for ten minutes
(If you are going TOTAL vegetarian, still include the bacon, but don't eat it. The flavoring from the bacon is what makes the cabbage REALLY amazing.)

Squash and Onions
3lbs. fresh squash (sliced)
3 or 4 large onions (any kind)

Spray frying pan to keep from sticking.
Sautee squash and onions until mushy. (about 30 minutes)
Add salt and pepper. (I like light salt and pepper.)

These are my faves. My mother concocted these through experimentation(they are straight from her head).

Baked sweet potatoes are really great and really healthy. Use nonfat butter substitute(I like the squirtable kind) with substitute sweetener and cinnamon.
Don't give up too quickly, I've found sweet potatoes to be very bitter myself, just keep adding stuff until you get the right taste. They DO get better the more stuff you add. Trust me.

My dad also enjoys cinnamon and sugar on mushy carrots.

A good thing to keep in mind is that vegetables make everything taste better. If you get a sandwich with meat on it, just pile on some green peppers, onions, and tomatoes(I love tomatoes). If you are planning on going total vegetarian, I am a BIG fan of tomato sandwiches.

Tomato Sandwich
Put mayonaise on two slices of bread and but two thick slices of tomato on the bread and put salt and pepper on the tomato.

There are some really great store brand vegetable packs that are REALLY easy to make. Experiment with different fried ocra that is already breaded. Also try different packages of cream and whole kernel corn.

What are some new, quick, and healthy dinner recipes?

Q. I love trying new recipes, but I'm all out of ideas :(

Answer
Lately I've been into shrimp salad sandwiches. It's easy, just buy a bag of frozen, cooked shrimp. Take out a handfull for each person, let them sit in a bowl of warm water until there are defrosted (5 min) then cut them up and mix with lowfat mayo. On a roll with lettuce- amazing!

A whole roast chicken is always great. It's not quick but all you have to do is pull the guts out, sprinkle with garlic powder, and roast at 425 for an hour an hour and a half. My mom does 350 for 2 hours but I'm impatient.

Shake & Bake pork chops only take 20 minutes and while they are cooking, put in a seperate cookie sheet with cut up veggies tossed in olive oil & garlic seasonings. They are so good, I use zucchini & carrots!

Pasta- instead of the standard tomato sauce, mix with olive oil, minced garlic, parm cheese, and some veggies. I always add black olives!

Steak tips only take 5 minutes if you buy them small enough. I cook them in a frying pan with butter but you can use cooking spray to be healthier.

What is a good meal plan( breakfast, lunch, dinner) for a teen losing weighf?

Vanessa

can you give me examples of meals? i eat 1200-1300 calories a day. include one healthy snack and if they are recipes include how to make them

Answer
Breakfest- Skip the sugary cereals and pancakes. Greek yogurt is an amazing breakfest. And a bunch of people will complain about protien bars being actually bad for you but the Zone Cookie Dough bars are amazing and keep you fill.
Lunch- If you want a sandwich, find bread that has fiber in it. Whole wheat doesnt mean anything but the fiber will keep you fill longer. Look for low fat lean lunch meats. If your deli has lunch meats, those are amazing. Skip the mayo.. try italian dressing instead. Make sure to eat 1-2 vegetable servings. Carrots and brocolli are easy. If you have to have dressing do the light dressings. check out ur grocery store and look for lowest calorie/fat contents.
Dinner-Well grilled chicken with different low cal sauces. Again make sure you have your vegetables. My favorite cookbook is Hungry Girl. It has amazing low cal/fat meals that taste just as good as the high calorie equivalents.
The main thing with losing weight is portion control. Let yourself eat the occasional candy bar or bag of chips but limit yourself. that why you won't splurge and overeat. Don't totally cut yourself off.
Also frozen yogurt is a great alternative to ice cream. If you want ice cream, go for slow churned from the grocery store or soft serve.
Also, try freezing your grapes. Literally put them in your freezer. Just take them out let them thaw for a minute or two and eat them. So yummy, perfect summer treat. Put some light whip cream with fruit for a healthy dessert.
Also popcorn (not the movies kind) is such a low cal snack. either microwave or Skinny Pop is the way to go.

How to get protein without eating meat?

iopaefkj

Hi,

I've recently decided to become a vegetarian and was wondering what foods I could eat that are a good source of protein. Unfortunately, I am extremely picky and don't like beans and am to scared to try the 'fake' meats lol. Also, if you could include some meals that are and some meals that are not pasta (my mom says that I eat to much pasta lol).

Please, any idea's would be useful !

I love pasta with cheese sauces and cheese and potatoes if that helps !

Answer
It is great that you are experimenting with your diet and it seems like you are searching for the right foods for you which is fantastic. As for vegetarian protein here are some options:

1) Beans: I would give them a try. It is a very healthy staple as a vegetarian. There are so many varieties that vary so much in taste.

2) Nuts and Seeds: Almonds, Cashews, Filberts, Hemp Seeds, Peanuts, Pumpkin seeds, Sesame seeds, Sunflower seeds, Walnuts (black)

3) Grains: Barley, Brown rice, Buckwheat, Millet, Oatmeal, Quinoa (very high source), Rye, Wheat germ, Wheat, hard red, Wild rice

4) Soy: Tofu, Edamame

I am not sure if you cook but if so here is a great sight for high protein recipes:
http://www.101cookbooks.com/high_protein_recipes/

If you want quick easy meals: Amy's veggie burgers are pretty good, you can add veggies to your sandwich or crumble it over salad, I don't know if a store near you sells Sunshine burgers but they are amazing too! My staple lunch/dinner is tortillas with veggies, nuts/seeds, beans/tofu and some spread/sauce (olive oil, pesto, hummus, avocado etc). I either make it into a burrito/wrap or use the tortilla as a pizza crust. Hope this helps!

Also, must be healthy and non-greasy!
Recipe for a full-blown meal, not merely a snack.

Answer
farmers market sandwich
1. Wash a zucchini, some button or baby portobello mushrooms, and some cherry or grape tomatoes. Red bell pepper is also optional.
2. Slice and dice everything, and set the tomatoes aside. Fry the rest of the veggies in butter, garlic, and basil until tender.
3. Melt a little cheese (optional) on a bagel or toast, and layer the veggies on. If you dice instead of slice, this makes a great baked potato topping. Serve with orange or grapefruit juice for an amazing breakfast.

Burrito Bowl
1. Make white or brown rice.
2. Pan fry black beans and corn together in olive or vegetable oil with chili powder, cumin, turmeric, crushed black pepper, and onion or garlic to taste. Pour this onto the rice.
3. Top with your favorite salsa, along with cheese/cheese replacer and lettuce if you'd prefer. You can add diced chili peppers to spice it up, or diced green bell peppers to cool it down.

My Favorite Stir Fry
1. Fry broccoli florets and sliced carrots in garlic butter/olive oil and minced garlic until tender.
2. Add baby corn spears and your favorite stir fry sauce. (I prefer House of Tsang Classic.)
3. Meanwhile, make udon or soba noodles, fettuccine noodles, or rice.
4. Add noodles/rice to stir fry and toss to coat.
5. Top with peanuts and enjoy.

Another Good Stir Fry
1. Press tofu and slice into small rectangles or cubes.
2. Wash snow or sugar snap peas and thinly sliced carrot sticks.
3. Fry until heated through, adding tofu near the end of frying, with your favorite stir fry sauce and maybe a little minced garlic.

Mediterranean Wraps (or Pita Pockets)
1. Gather a few of your favorite Mediterranean veggies (peppers, squashes, snow peas, potatoes, garlic, onions, etc.) Wash and slice them.
2. Put them in a container and add olive oil and Italian seasonings. (I just buy an Italian seasonings grinder, but feel free to improvise.) Toss to coat.
3. Bake, covered, at 350 until tender. The timing depends on what veggies you choose, but it should be between 20 and 45 minutes.
4. Remove from oven and put in wraps, pitas (with hummus of course), or serve with spaghetti and garlic bread.

Veggie Chili
1. Heat either tomato juice or chunky style tomato sauce, depending on how thick you want your chili.
2. Add beans and select veggies (frozen bags of veggie soup veggies work well). Optional: add tempeh, seitan, or TVP ground beef replacer.
3. Add chili powder, cumin, turmeric, and any other spices you'd like.
4. Simmer and serve with corn bread, on fries, or on veggie dogs.

Rice Pilaf
1. Prepare vegetarian friendly rice pilaf. (I use Near East.)
2. Steam broccoli, and tofu cubes if you'd like.
3. Combine, and top with slivered almonds or pine nuts if you're feeling fancy.

A Vegetarian's Steak Dinner
1. Grill or saute a portobello mushroom cap with minced garlic, sea or Kosher salt, crushed black pepper, and soy sauce (or balsamic vinegar.)
2. Serve with a baked potato and green vegetables.
OR put in on a hamburger bun and serve with baked fries or sweet potato fries.

For a super-light dinner . . .
1. Slice cucumbers, tomatoes, and red onions. Add baby spinach.
2. Toss with fresh lemon juice and fresh basil. Serve fresh.
OR
2. Toss with olive oil, garlic crushed black pepper. Bake at 350 until warm.
3. Serve with whole wheat toast and avocado slices.

Tofu scramble
1. Press a block of extra firm tofu with you was and cut your vegetables (potatoes, bell peppers of any colour, carrots, and mushrooms.)
2. Lightly oil a large skillet with olive or vegetable oil and add a little garlic, crushed black pepper, and cumin. Add potato cubes and carrot sticks, and stir constantly until heated through.
3. Next, add the mushroom slices and diced pepper. Season with basil and a little more garlic. Continue stirring until heated through.
4. Crumble the pressed tofu on top, adding more cumin and black pepper, as well as a little chili powder. Stir while adding a dash of soy, and sprinkle in turmeric until desired colour is achieved. Continue heating and stirring until the tofu has mixed well with the vegetables and heated through.
5. Serve in place of scrambled eggs, or wrap in a tortilla with salsa for the best breakfast burrito ever.
(I make this the night before, since I never have enough time in the morning. Just place it in the fridge in a tightly sealed container and microwave it or heat it in a skillet the next morning. It's meant for breakfast, but a large enough serving makes a great lunch or dinner on its own.)

Hey everyone, happy new year!!

I have been living off microwaveable macaroni cheese ready meals at uni and my new year's resolution is to start cook myself healthy meals!

I want to say salads, but I think that is way obvious. But I would suggest you try this website I found with tons and tons of amazing recipes for all sorts of things. If you like the website and choose to use it, I recommend also reading some of the comments because they've found ways to switch it up to make the dish even better.

Also, I don't know how quick you want things made. I estimate if a dish can be ready from start to finish in 20 minutes, its quick! (Of course, I don't count the 5-10 minutes to prepare marinades the night before). I also don't know if you have access to an oven or stove top...

Here are a few (quick?) vegetarian dishes I found:
http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Three-Bean-Salad/Detail.aspx (prepare time is short, but needs to chill for 12 hours)
http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Eggplant-and-Pepper-Parmesan-Sandwiches/Detail.aspx (25 minutes total time!)
http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Quick-and-Easy-Stuffed-Peppers/Detail.aspx (Microwavable stuffed bell peppers! My boyfriend tried this recipe and said it came out as good as ones baked in the oven)
http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/College-Students-Saucy-Chickpeas/Detail.aspx (college student's recipe!)

There's also lots of smoothie recipes and lots of fun salad recipes on there also.

I hope that helped a little. Just browse around a little more and I'm sure you will find some great recipes. Print them out, make your own little recipe book (that's what I did for my boyfriend's birthday) and have some cooking fun.

Answer
omg this is where i shine! I love to cook and hope to get into a cooking school , but my mind could since i'm 13 XD

Breakfast:
Monday - Take any flavor of yogurt and put it in a bowl, slice up some banana and put with yogurt, add a few chcolate shavings for a little extra treat ^^ OJ is very heathy as well ^^
Tuesday - Oatmeal, oatmeal, oatmeal. Oatmeal is uber healthy. Oatmeal isn't just plain plain plain. There's instant packets you can use. Some flavors are cinnamon apple, maple syrup (really good) and many others try it out ^^

What are your suggestions for figuring out a food budget for a family of five?

I have roughly $300 a month to spend on food.

Answer
Here are some tips I use to save money feeding our family of 6.

Make a list of all of the meals that you and your family enjoy. List the ingredients and find out which items you use most. Find those items in bulk. Sometimes eating on a budget means adding carb laden meals (pasta, rice) Try to keep these meals to a minimum to keep everyone healthy! Also, use leftovers from one night to make a meal the next. My mother is amazing at this. Beef roast one night means beef and noodles the next night or night after. A pot of bean soup means chili the next night....and so on.

We purchase 1/2 a beef every year. We spent around 600 this year, that was the meat and processing. The price works out to around .52 per pound. Amazing! It's nice to have a freezer full of steaks, hamburger, roasts. The beef is so much better than anything you will find in the store and the price per pound is a huge savings. I also try to buy other meats in bulk and on sale. Making this a yearly expense instead of a monthly expense really cuts down on shopping time and cost.

Find a local discount bread store. I spend $.69 a loaf vs $1.30 a month at a regular grocer. With lots of kids making sandwiches and toast this can really add up quick.

Pack lunches. Big money saver and much healthier.

Stop buying packaged cookies. Baking is not only cheaper but makes the house smell great and no preservatives! Make extra dough and freeze it so you can have fresh cookies anytime.

Find an alternative to breakfast cereal. I found a great recipe for granola online and my kids love it with milk in the morning. Bake fresh muffins. Keep frozen fruit like blueberries around and make more than you need, pop them into the freezer. A quick warm up in the microwave in the morning is yummy. My kids and I recently found a recipe for pop-tarts and we'll be trying that soon.

When you find something that you use often on sale, stock up. A few extra bucks when something is on sale will save you money later.

Make breakfast for dinner every couple of weeks. Pancakes or waffles are pretty cheap to make and the kids love the change of pace.

Don't order pizza, learn how to make it! You can make a homemade pizza for about $3.00, ordering one (or two) at our house costs around $25.00.

Make your biggest expense fruits and veggies. My kids tend to snack on carrots, celery, green peppers, cucumber, apples, pears, peaches and popcorn. Buying snack foods can really add up and it's just not healthy.

Try to save money on other store purchases. I found that I was spending much of my budget on shampoo, soap, dish washing powder, laundry items, paper products. I started making a special trip to stores like Family Dollar and Sally Beauty Supply. You can get great deals on household items. I also learned how to make soap. It's a little involved but once you do it, not a big deal. I made a large batch last year, we used it, gave it away in baskets as gifts and I just recently ran out. The total cost to make it was around 15.00.

I hope that helps. I've found many ways to cut down expenses and put more money in savings. All you have to do is really take a look at how you do things now and make some small changes. It's a little more work but I think well worth it for the savings.

Good luck :)
